कथान्ते प्रणमन्भक्त्या प्रसादं जगृहुस्ततः

By the power of the worship, the Bhillas, together with their sons and wives,
भुक्त्वा भोगान्यथेष्टन्ते दरिद्रान्धा द्विजोत्तम
Having enjoyed pleasures as they wished, the poor and blind, O best of twice-born,
नृपोपदेशतः साधुः कृतार्थोऽभूद्वणिग्यथा
By the king's instruction, the virtuous one became fulfilled, just as the merchant did.
मणिपूरपती राजा चन्द्रचूडो महायशाः
The king of Manipur, Chandracuda, possessed great fame.
अथ रत्नपुरस्थायी साधुर्लक्षपतिर्वणिक्
Then, residing in Ratnapura, was a virtuous merchant, lord of a hundred thousand.
ददर्श बहुलं लोकं नानाग्रामविलासिनम्
He saw a multitude of people, delighting in various villages.
वेदवादांश्च शुश्राव गीतवादित्रसंगतान्
He heard Vedic teachings, and gatherings of singing and instrumental music.
विश्रामयात्र तरणीरिति पश्यामि कौतुकम्
Let us rest here; I see a boat, and I am curious.
तटसीम्नः समुत्तीर्य मल्ललीलाविलासिनः
Crossing over the riverbank, those skilled in wrestling games displayed their prowess.
स्वयमुत्तीर्य सामात्यो लोकान्पप्रच्छ सादरम्
Having crossed himself, along with his ministers, he respectfully questioned the people.
किमत्र क्रियते सभ्या भवद्भिर्लोकपूजितैः
What is being done here, O honorable ones, revered by the people?
पूज्यते बंधुभिः सार्धं राज्ञा लोकानुकंपिना 3.2.28.
Together with his relatives, the king, compassionate toward the people, is being honored.
धनार्थी लभते द्रव्यं पुत्रार्थी सुतमुत्तमम्
One who desires wealth obtains riches; one who desires a son obtains an excellent child.
सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति नरः सत्यसुरार्च नात्
A man attains all desires by worshiping the truthful gods.
दंडवत्प्रणिपत्याह कामं सभ्यानमोदयत्
Having bowed down with reverence, he spoke, expressing his wish to the assembly.
पुत्रं वा यदि वा कन्यां लभेयं त्वत्प्रसादतः
By your favor, may I obtain a son or a daughter.
श्रुत्वा सभ्या अब्रुवंस्ते कामनासिद्धिरस्तु ते
Hearing this, the assembly replied: May the fulfillment of your desire be yours.
जगाम स्वालयं साधुर्मनसा चिंतयन्हरिम्
The virtuous man went to his own house, contemplating Hari in his mind.
मंगलानि विचित्राणि यथोचितमकारयन्
He performed various auspicious rites as appropriate.
ऋतुस्नाता सती लीलावती पर्यचरत्पतिम्

When the girl reached ten years, she became mature and menstruated.
नगरे कांचनपुरे वणिक्छंखपतिः श्रुतः
In the city of Kāñcanapura, a merchant named Śaṅkhapati was renowned.
वरयामास तं साधुर्दुहितुः सदृशं वरम्
The sage chose him as a suitable husband for his daughter.
वेदवादित्रनिनदैर्ददौ कन्यां यथाविधि
With the sounds of Vedic chants and instruments, he gave his daughter away according to proper rites.
महामोदमनाः साधुर्मंगलार्थं ददौ च ह
The sage, his mind filled with great joy, gave her for auspiciousness.
तं मेने पुत्रवत्साधुः स च तं पितृवत्सुधीः
The sage regarded him as a son, and the wise man regarded the sage as a father.
