I have thousands of wives, O Pāṇḍava, sixteen in number.
With them, in the season of spring, amidst gatherings of cuckoos and bees, in assemblies filled with abundant drink, they are fully adorned and engaged.
With eyes like a deer, splendid, with mālatī flowers as a crest ornament.
Appearing in the very form of Kandarpa (Cupid), adorned with all ornaments.
Manmatha, greatly aroused, agitates all their limbs.
All the robbers here, who are enraged without exception, will be taken away.
Hearing these words, their eyes filled with tears.
They lamented, 'The Lord of the worlds, our husband, has been conquered by another.'
All the residents of Dvaraka, the boys with forms like gods,
How shall we, having attained the state of servants, ever become so again?
Thus, as they wailed, their eyes brimming with tears,
Formerly, in the playful water games in the Mānasa lake,
All of you were once apsarases, daughters of the fire-god.
How could Nārāyaṇa become our husband? Tell us this.
By giving a double bed during the months of spring and summer, Nārāyaṇa will surely become the husband in another birth.
Because I did not offer obeisance, out of envy for beauty and good fortune, all were stolen by thieves; you will attain the state of courtesans.
Thus, by the curse of Nārada and my own curse as well, at this time—
Now also, what I will say, listen, O beautiful-faced ones: among the armies of Dānavas, Asuras, and Rākṣasas, here and there—
Among them, there are hundreds and thousands of women.
The Lord of the gods, best among speakers, spoke to all of them.
Those of you who are devoted, O beautiful ones, then also in the temples of the gods—
Dwell in their houses, and observe the period of impurity accordingly.
He must be permitted and pleased, and always give a fee like a god.
Whether handsome or ugly, wealth is what matters there; and one should not associate with drunkards or those of crooked mind.
Whoever comes to your house after accepting a fee,
Adultery must never be committed with the master, whether out of pride in beauty or youth, or again from greed for wealth.
And any woman who, having become a servant, commits adultery,
When the auspicious day for the gods and ancestors arrives,
Beautiful women should serve the Brahmins and heed their words; and whatever other vow there is, I will instruct it properly.
All these should be performed by all, without discrimination.
