सोमो नक्षत्रराजश्च मासः संवत्सरं तथा
Soma, the king of the stars, as well as the month and the year.
एवं संपूज्य विधिवद्देवदेवं जनार्दनम्
Thus, having worshipped Janardana, the god of gods, according to the prescribed method.
कर्णांगुलैः पवित्रैश्च शांतं दांतं जितेन्द्रियम्
With pure fingers and ears, calm, restrained, and master of the senses.
तस्मै देयं समस्तं तदनन्तः प्रीयतामिति
To him, everything should be given, so that the infinite may be pleased.
अनेन विधिना पार्थ व्रतं चैतत्समाप्यते
By this procedure, O Partha, this vow is completed.
पुत्रार्थिभिर्वित्तकामैर्भृत्यदारानभीप्सुभिः
By those desiring sons, wealth, or not wishing for servants and wives.
एतद्व्रतं महाभागे पुण्यं स्वस्त्ययनप्रदम्
This vow, O highly fortunate one, is holy and brings auspiciousness.
तत्कुरुष्वैव देवि त्वं व्रतं शीलधने परम् 4.106.
Therefore, O lady, you should indeed perform this vow, which is supreme in virtue and conduct.
चकारैतद्व्रतवरं सा विष्ण्वाहितमानसा
She performed this excellent vow, her mind devoted to Vishnu.
पुत्रार्थिन्यास्ततस्तस्माद्व्रतेनानेन सुव्रत
Therefore, O virtuous one, by this vow, for the woman desiring a son.
तस्य वै जातमात्रस्य प्रववौ चानिलः शुभम्
For him, as soon as he was born, a gentle wind blew.
देवदुन्दुभयो नेदुः पुष्पवृष्टिः पपात च
Divine drums resounded, and a shower of flowers fell.
धर्मे मनः समस्तस्य पार्थ लोकस्य चाभवत्
The mind of everyone, O Partha, and of the world, became fixed in righteousness.
कृतवीर्यसुतत्वाच्च कार्तवीर्यो बभूव सः आराधितोऽतिमहता तपसा पार्थ भूभृता
Because he was the son of Kritavirya, he became Kartavirya, worshipped by the rulers of the earth through great austerity.
तस्य तुष्टो जगन्नाथश्चक्रवर्तित्वमुत्तमम् स वव्रे च वधो देव मम त्वत्तो भवेदिति
The Lord of the universe was pleased with him and granted him supreme sovereignty; and he requested, 'May my death come from you, O god.'
परं तु स्मरणं ज्ञानं भीतानामार्तिनाशनम्
But remembrance and knowledge are the destroyers of fear and suffering.
तमाह देवदेवेशः पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणः
The Lord of gods, whose eyes resemble lotuses, spoke to him.
यश्च प्रभाते रात्रौ च त्वां नरः कीर्तयिष्यति तिलप्रस्थप्रदानस्य नरः पुण्यमवाप्स्यति ।। 4.106.
Whoever, in the morning or at night, praises you, will obtain the merit of giving a measure of sesame.
अनष्टद्रव्यता चैव तव नामानुकीर्तने
There is no loss of wealth, indeed, in the recitation of your name.
स चापि वरमासाद्य प्रसन्नाद्गरुडध्वजात्
And he, having obtained a boon from the gracious bearer of the Garuḍa banner,
तेनेष्टं विविधैर्यज्ञैः समाप्तवरदक्षिणैः
Worshipped him with various sacrifices, complete with the bestowal of desired gifts.
अनंतव्रतमाहात्म्यादासाद्य तनयं च तम्
By the greatness of the Ananta vow, he also obtained that son.
एवमेतत्समाख्यातमनंताख्यं व्रतं तव
Thus has your vow called Ananta been described.
यश्चैतच्छृणुयाज्जन्म कार्तवीर्यस्य मानवः
And any man who hears this account of the birth of Kārtavīrya,
ऐश्वर्यमप्रतिहतं परमं विवेकं पुत्रानमित्रहृदयार्तिकरान्बहूंश्च
Will obtain unobstructed prosperity, supreme discernment, sons, the removal of enemies, relief from the pain of the heart, and many more blessings.
सांभरायणीव्रतवर्णनम् यथा मनोरथैः स्वैः स्वैर्नानादुःखं भवेन्नृणाम्
The description of the Sāmbarāyaṇī vow: Just as, by their own desires, people do not experience various kinds of suffering,
यथा मनोरथैर्लब्धैर्न स्याद्दुःखभयं नृणाम्
And just as, by the fulfillment of their wishes, there is no fear of suffering for people,
अभीष्टादन्यतो वापि यदाघेन विनिष्कृतिम् तन्ममाचक्ष्व भगवन्येन नाभ्येति विच्युतिम्
O blessed one, tell me that means, by which, from any desired object or from sin, one may be freed, so that one does not meet with downfall.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच सत्यमेतन्महाभाग दुःखं प्राप्नोत्यसंशयः
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: This is true, O highly fortunate one; without doubt, suffering is obtained.
ऐश्वर्योदयचित्तस्य बंधुवर्गसुखस्य च
For one whose mind is set on the rise of prosperity and the happiness of relatives,
