उपदेशं प्रयच्छेद्यस्तस्मै व्रतकृते नरः मासेमासे विधिरयं व्रतस्यास्य नराधिप
He who gives instruction to one who has observed the vow—this is the rule for each month, O king of men, regarding this vow.
यो न शक्नोति वा कर्तुं पक्षं वाथ निरंतरम्
He who is unable to perform it for a fortnight or continuously—
यश्चैतत्कुरुते पार्थ पौर्णमासीव्रतं नरः
O Pārtha, whoever performs this vow of the full moon day,
पुत्रपौत्रधनोपेतो यज्वा दाता प्रियंवदः
becomes endowed with sons, grandsons, and wealth, a performer of sacrifices, a giver, and one who speaks pleasantly.
ततश्चैवाक्षयाँल्लोकान्प्राप्नोति सुरसेवितान् आस्ते संपूर्णसर्वांगो यावत्कल्पायुतत्रयम्
Thereafter, he attains imperishable worlds served by the gods, and remains there with a body complete in every way for three thousand aeons.
अभ्यर्चयंति सितपञ्चदशीषु सोमं कृष्णासु ये पितृगणं जलपिंडदानैः
Those who worship Soma on the bright fifteenth days and offer water libations to the ancestors on the dark fortnights,
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे विजयपौर्ण मासीव्रतवर्णनं नाम नवनवतितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa, in the Uttaraparvan, in the dialogue between Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Yudhiṣṭhira, the ninety-ninth chapter named 'Description of the Victorious Paurṇamāsī Vow' is concluded.
वैशाखीकार्त्तिकीमाघीव्रतवर्णनम् ता मे वद यदुश्रेष्ठ स्नाने दाने महाफलाः
Describe to me, O best of the Yadus, the vows of Vaiśākha, Kārttika, and Māgha, which yield great merit through bathing and giving.
स्नानदानविहीनैस्ता न नेयाः पांडुनन्दन
O son of Pāṇḍu, those vows should not be observed without bathing and giving.
तीर्थस्नानं तदा शस्तं दानं वित्तानुरूपतः
At that time, bathing at holy places is praised, and giving should be according to one's means.
कार्त्तिक्यां पुष्करारण्यं माघ्यां वाराणसी स्मृता
In Kārttika, Puṣkara forest is remembered; in Māgha, Vārāṇasī is prescribed.
कुंभान्स्वछांभसः पूर्णान्सहिरण्यान्नसंयुतान्
One should give pitchers filled with pure water, along with gold and food.
मधुरान्नरसैः पूर्णान्भाजनान्कनकोज्ज्वलान्
One should give shining golden vessels filled with sweet foods and liquids.
माघ्यां मघासु च तथा संतर्प्य पितृदेवताः
In Māgha, during the Maghā constellation, one should satisfy the ancestors and deities.
कार्पासदानमत्रैव तिलदानं च शस्यते
Here, the gift of cotton and the gift of sesame are also praised.
उपानद्दानमत्रैव कथितं सर्वकामदम्
Here, the gift of garments is declared to fulfill all desires.
कलिकालोद्भवं सर्वं शस्यते पांडुनन्दन कार्यं कुरुकुलश्रेष्ठ हरेर्नीराजनं तथा ।। 4.100.
O son of Pāṇḍu, all that arises in the age of Kali is praised here; O best of the Kurus, the worship of Hari should also be performed.
गजाश्वरथदानं च घृतधेन्वादयस्तथा
The giving of elephants, horses, and chariots, as well as cows yielding ghee, is also prescribed.
फलानि यानि विद्यंते सुगन्धिमधुराणि च
All fruits that exist, which are fragrant and sweet,
खर्जूरीं नालिकेरांश्च कदल्याश्च फलानि च
such as dates, coconuts, and bananas, should be given as offerings.
वृंताकान्कारवेल्लांश्च बिंबान्कूष्मांडकर्बुरान् ते व्याधिता दरिद्राश्च जायंते भुवि मानवाः
People afflicted by disease and poverty are born on earth, taking the forms of eggplants, gourds, watermelons, tomatoes, pumpkins, and cucumbers.
न केवलं ब्राह्मणानां दानं सर्वस्य शस्यते दरिद्राणां च बंधूनां दानं कोटिगुणोत्त रम्
Not only is giving to Brahmins praised, but giving to all is commendable; and giving to poor relatives is considered a thousand times greater.
मित्रं कुलीनश्चापन्नो वधुर्दारिद्र्यदुःखितः
A friend, a nobleman fallen into hardship, or a wife suffering from poverty and sorrow—
वनं प्रस्थापिते रामे ससीते सह लक्ष्मणे सा सर्वेः श्रावितानेकैः कोशल्या भरतेन वै
When Rama set out to the forest with Sita and Lakshmana, Kausalya was informed of everything by Bharata and others.
यदा न प्रत्ययं याति कथंचित्कोशलात्मजा
Yet the daughter of Kausalya did not gain any certainty in any way.
वैशाखी कार्तिकी माघी तिथयोमरपूजिताः
The auspicious lunar days of Vaishakha, Kartika, and Magha are honored by the gods.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु कौशल्या सहसा प्रत्ययं गता 4.100.
Hearing this, Kausalya at once attained certainty.
एतत्तिथीनां माहात्म्यमाख्यातं बहुविस्तरम्

वैशाखकार्तिकमघासहिताथ माघे या पूर्णिमा भवति पूर्णशशांकचिह्ना
The full moon that occurs in Magha, along with Vaishakha, Kartika, and Magha, bears the mark of the complete moon.
युगादितिथिव्रतमाहात्म्यवर्णनम् कथ्यमानमिहेच्छामि शुभधर्मपदं महत्
Now I wish to speak here of the great and auspicious path of dharma, describing the glory of the vow on the first day of the age.
