ग्रीवासूत्रकसिंदूरकुंकुमेन च भूषयेत्
He should adorn them with necklaces, sacred threads, vermilion, and saffron.
अच्छिद्रा जलपूर्णास्तु सुवृत्ताः सूत्रवेष्टिताः
Let the pots be unbroken, filled with water, well-shaped, and wrapped with thread.
चंदनेन समालब्धाः सहिरण्याः पृथक्पृथक्
Anointed with sandalwood, and with gold, each one separately.
स्थित्वा मण्डलके मध्ये यजमानः स्वयं तदा तत्सर्वं नाशमायातु पितृदेवर्षिणां नृणाम्
Then, standing in the center of the circle, the sacrificer himself should wish that all this may remove the misfortunes of ancestors, gods, seers, and men.
इमा मे समयं स्वर्णं तारयस्व भवार्णवात् एवमस्त्विति ता ब्रूयुः स्त्रियः सर्वा युधिष्ठिर
"O ladies, deliver me across the ocean of worldly existence with this gold of mine." Let all the women reply, "So be it," O Yudhishthira.
ततो ब्राह्मणमाहूय यजमान इदं वदेत्
Then, having called the Brahmin, the sacrificer should say this:
उत्तीर्य श्रावणं मासं समुत्तारय सांप्रतम्
"Having crossed the month of Shravana, now deliver me completely."
उपोष्य शिरसो देव्याः समुत्तीर्य रुहद्रुमान् ततो गच्छ महादेवं श्रवणे श्रवणोत्तमे
Having fasted for the goddess on the head, and having crossed the fig trees, then go to Mahadeva in the excellent Shravana.
इति वर्धनिकोत्तारणमन्त्रः 4.95.
Thus ends the mantra for the Vardhanika Uttarana.
तां वर्द्धनिकामेकान्ते विप्राय प्रतिपादयेत्
That Vardhanika should be given in solitude to a Brahmin.
यजमानोऽपि यातासु यथेष्टं काममाचरेत्
The sacrificer, after completing the rites, may act as he desires.
तस्य काले तु संप्राप्ते सुखं मृत्युः प्रजायते
When its time arrives, death comes pleasantly.
पुत्रपौत्रसमृद्ध्यादौ भुक्त्वा मर्त्यसुखानि च
Having enjoyed prosperity in sons and grandsons, and the pleasures of mortal life,
स्त्रीणां तुल्यं स हीनोऽपि व्रती व्रतफलं व्रजेत्
Even one lacking, among women, who observes the vow, attains the fruit of the vow.
तदेकेनापि लभते पार्थ श्रावणिकाव्रते
By even one, O Partha, the Śrāvaṇikā vow is obtained.
श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादवर्णनम् येन विज्ञातमात्रेण नरो मोक्षमवाप्नुयात्
Description of the conversation between Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Yudhiṣṭhira, by which, upon mere understanding, a man attains liberation.
येषु तेषु च मासेषु शुक्लपक्षे चतुर्दशीम्
In those months, on the fourteenth day of the bright fortnight,
मासिमासि भवंति द्वावष्टम्यौ च चतुर्दशी वसुधाभाजनं कृत्वा भुञ्जीयान्नक्तभोजनम्
In each month, there are two eighth days and the fourteenth; having made an earthen vessel, one should eat only at night.
उपवासात्परं भैक्ष्यं भैक्ष्यात्परमयाचितम्
After fasting, one should accept alms, and beyond alms, only what is begged.
देवैश्च भुक्तं पूर्वाह्णे मध्याह्ने मुनिभिस्तथा
The gods eat in the morning, and the sages at midday likewise.
सर्वलोकानतिक्रम्य नक्तभोजी सदा भवेत्
Surpassing all worlds, one should always eat only at night.
अग्निकार्यो ह्यधःशय्यो नक्तभोजी सदा भवेत् पूर्णकुम्भोपरिस्थाप्य पूजयेच्च सुशोभने
One who performs fire rites, sleeps on the ground, and always eats only at night, should place a full pot and worship the auspicious one.
कपिलापञ्चगव्येन स्थापयेन्मृन्मयं शिवम्
With the five products of the cow from a Kapila, one should establish a clay image of Śiva.
तत्कुम्भानां जलोन्मिश्रमर्घमष्टांगमुच्यते
The offering mixed with water from those pots is called the eightfold arghya.
महादेवाय दातव्यं गन्धपुष्पं यथाक्रमम् 4.96.
To Mahādeva should be given fragrance and flowers in proper order.
धेनुं वा दक्षिणां दद्याद्वृषं वापि धुरंधरम् यो ददाति शिवे भक्त्या तस्य पुण्यफलं शृणु
One should give a cow as a gift, or a bull fit for the yoke; hear the merit gained by one who gives to Śiva with devotion.
विमानमर्कप्रतिमं हंसयुक्तमलंकृतम्
A celestial vehicle, resembling the sun, adorned and drawn by swans.
स्थित्वा रुद्रस्य भवने वर्षकोटिशतत्रयम्
Having remained in the abode of Rudra for three hundred million years.
यश्चाष्टमीषु च शिवासु चतुर्दशीषु नक्तं समाचरति शास्त्रविधान दृष्टम्
And whoever, on the eighth and fourteenth days sacred to Shiva, observes night fasting as prescribed by scripture.
शिवचतुर्दशीव्रतवर्णनम् त्रिषु लोकेषु विख्यातं नाम्ना शिवचतुर्दशी
The vow of Shiva's fourteenth day is described; it is renowned by name as Shiva-caturdaśī in the three worlds.
