गच्छ शीघ्रं न दहते भुवनं यावदंगिराः
Go quickly, for Angiras will not burn the world as long as you are gone.
पाटलो हरितः शोणः श्वेतो वर्णः प्रणाशितः दग्धमङ्गिरसा सर्वं भूयोऽपि प्रदहिष्यति
Red, green, crimson, and white—these colors have been destroyed; all has been burned by Angiras, and he will burn it again.
यावच्च दहते सर्वं भुवनं तपसांगिराः
As long as Angiras burns the whole world with his austerity—
एवमुक्तः स विभुना स्वस्थानमधिरूढवान्
Thus addressed by the Lord, he ascended to his own place.
गत्वाङ्गिरा उवाचेदं गतः किं करवाण्यहम्
Having gone, Angiras spoke: 'Having arrived, what should I do?'
संप्रशस्योचुरग्नित्वं कुरु तावन्महीतले
They praised him and said, 'You, Agni, perform your duty on earth for now.'
यावदग्निं प्रपश्यामः क्वासौ नष्टः क्व तिष्ठति 4.93.
Until we see Agni, where is he lost, where does he reside?
देवैर्दृष्टो यथा ह्यग्निस्तत्ते सर्वं निवेदितम्
As Agni was seen by the gods, all of that has been reported to you.
अग्नेऽग्नित्वं कुरुष्व त्वमंगिरास्तु यथा पुरा
Agni, assume your own form; Angiras, as before, do likewise.
को मेऽपहृतं तेजः केनाग्नित्वं कृतं त्विह
Who has taken away my brilliance? By whom has my status as Agni been assumed here?
उवाच मुञ्च मत्स्थानं वचस्तोषकरं शृणु
He said, 'Leave my place; listen to words that bring satisfaction.'
बृहस्पतीति नामा वै तथान्ये बहवः सुताः
Bṛhaspati is the name, and likewise there are many other sons.
वह्निं संजनयामास पुत्रान्पौत्रांस्तदांगिराः
Angiras generated fire, as well as sons and grandsons at that time.
सर्वमेव चतुर्दश्यां संजातं हव्यवाहनम्
All the sacrificial fires were born on the fourteenth day.
ततोऽष्टपतिपत्वे च रुद्रेण प्रतिपादितम्
Then, the lordship over eight was bestowed by Rudra.
पैलजाबालिमन्वाद्यैरन्यैश्च नहुषादिभिः
By Paila, Jābāli, Manu and others, and also by Nahuṣa and the rest.
अज्ञातावृषपापैश्च व्यालैर्ये व्याप्य हिंसिताः 4.93.
By unknown sinful bulls and serpents, those who were harmed and slain.
पतिताः पर्वतेभ्यश्च तोयाग्निदहने मृताः तेषां शस्तं चतुर्दश्यां श्राद्धं स्वर्गसुखप्रदम्
Those who fell from mountains, died by water or fire, for them, the śrāddha on the fourteenth day grants heavenly happiness.
श्राद्धानि चैव दत्तानि दानानि सुलघून्यपि
Śrāddhas and gifts, even the smallest donations, are given.
एवं तिथिरियं राजन्नाग्नेयी प्रोच्यते जनैः
Thus, O king, this lunar day is called the Agni day by people.
यस्यां मनोरथं यंयं समुद्दिश्य ह्युपोषति
On this day, whatever desire one has, having resolved it, one fasts.
चतुर्दश्यां निराहारः समभ्यर्च्य त्रिलोचनम् पञ्चगव्यं निशि प्राश्य स्वप्याद्भूमौ विमत्सरः
On the fourteenth day, fasting, worshipping the three-eyed one, eating pañcagavya at night, one should sleep on the ground without envy.
श्यामाकमथ वा भुक्त्वा तैलक्षारविवर्जितम्
After eating śyāmāka grain, avoiding oil and alkali.
अग्नये हव्यवाहनाय सोमायांगिरसे नमः
Salutation to Agni, the bearer of offerings, to Soma, and to Āṅgiras.
पूजयित्वा विधानेन होमं कृत्वा तथैव च
Having worshipped according to the prescribed method and performed the fire offering likewise.
नमस्त्रिमूर्तये तुभ्यं नमः सूर्याग्निरूपिणे
Salutation to You, O Trimūrti; salutation to You, who are the form of the Sun and Fire.
नीराजनं ततः कृत्वा पश्चाद्भुंजीत वाग्यतः 4.93.
Then, after performing the waving of lights, one should eat, observing silence.
सौवर्णं कारयेद्देवं त्रिनेत्रं शूलपाणिनम्
One should make a golden image of the deity, with three eyes and holding a trident.
चन्दनेनानुलिप्ताङ्गं सितमाल्योपशोभितम् सर्वकालिकमेतत्ते कथितं व्रतमुत्तमम्
Whose limbs are anointed with sandalwood and adorned with white garlands; this excellent vow, suitable for all times, has been described to you.
संवत्सरं समाप्तं हि व्रतस्य तु यदा भवेत् मृतस्य देहो दिव्यस्थो दिव्यालंकारभूषितः
When a year of the vow is completed, the body of the deceased attains a divine state, adorned with celestial ornaments.
