उवाचासौ चिरं ध्यात्वा रुद्रोमाशुक्रसम्भवः
He spoke, having meditated for a long time, Rudra born of Umā and Śukra.
एवं श्रुत्वा गता देवा यत्र शम्भुः सहोमया
Having heard thus, the gods went to where Śambhu was with Umā.
प्रतिपन्नं च रुद्रेण उमया सहितेन तत्
That which was accepted by Rudra together with Umā.
दिव्यं वर्षशतं साग्रं गतः कालोऽथ मैथुने भयं च सुमहत्तेषां देवानां समजायत
A divine hundred years, with a little more, passed in union; then great fear arose among the gods.
स रुद्रसम्भवो यो वै भविष्यति महाबलः
He who is born of Rudra will indeed be of great strength.
केन कालेन भवति रतेर्विरतिरेतयोः
By what time does the cessation of union occur for those two?
गतौ तौ चोमया दृष्टौ समस्थौ विषमस्थया 4.93.
The two departed, and were seen by Umā, standing together and standing apart.
यस्मात्तैर्जनितो विघ्नो मेऽपत्यार्थे दिवौकसाम्
Because of them, an obstacle arose for me regarding offspring for the gods.
अथोवाच तदा देवो देवान्सर्वगणाञ्छनैः
Then at that time, the god spoke quietly to all the assembled gods.
एवमुक्तोऽथ रुद्रेण नष्टोऽग्निर्देवसंकुलात्
Thus addressed by Rudra, Agni vanished from the gathering of the gods.
देवा अन्वेषणे यत्नमकुर्वन्नग्निदर्शने
The gods made efforts to search for Agni and to see him.
हंसाः केकाः शुका वह्निः शीघ्रं शरवणं गताः
Swans, peacocks, parrots, and Agni swiftly went to the thicket of reeds.
दृष्ट्वाथ विबुधाः सर्वे पक्षिणं पक्षिणां वरम्
Then, seeing the best among birds, all the gods were amazed.
कच्चिदृष्टस्त्वया वह्निर्वनेऽस्मिन्नटता सदा
"Have you perchance seen Agni, who always wanders in this forest?"
भूयोभूयस्तु पृष्टोऽपि न गामुच्चारयेच्चिरम्
Though asked again and again, he did not utter a word for a long time.
यस्मान्न किञ्चिदुक्तं ते तस्माच्चित्र तनूरुहाः
Because you said nothing, therefore, O one of wondrous feathers—
द्वितीयं ते वरं दद्मो जीवजीवक शोभनम् 4.93.
We grant you a second boon, O beautiful Jivajivaka.
कश्चिद्यदि तवाधस्थाद्बुधः स्नानं करिष्यति
If any wise person bathes beneath you,
मासं यश्च तृतीयं वै भक्षयिष्यत्यनिंदितम्
And whoever eats your third egg in a month, blamelessly,
इदं दत्त्वा वरांस्तस्य वह्नित्वमथ आप्तवान्
Having granted these boons to him, Agni then regained his own nature.
ऊष्मया जातकल्माषं ज्ञात्वा संहृष्टमानसः
Knowing that he had become stained by heat, he was gladdened in mind.
ऊष्मया कल्मषीभूय ह्यग्निर्गर्भं धरिष्यति
Having become tainted by heat, Agni will bear the embryo.
पंडाग्निपालने पुण्यं यद्दृष्टं ब्रह्मवादिभिः
The merit seen by the knowers of Brahman lies in the protection of the sacred fire.
वंशस्यानुग्रहं कृत्वा देव्याहृतिमथाब्रुवन्
Having shown favor to the lineage, they then spoke of the offering to the goddess.
भूयोऽपि केन कालेन अग्निरग्नित्वमाप्तवान्
Again, after some time, Agni regained his own fiery nature.
यस्मिन्काले तिथी यस्या पुनरग्नित्वमाप्तवान्
At what time, on which lunar day, did he again regain his fiery nature?
उतथ्याङ्गिरसोः पूर्वमासीद्व्यतिकरो महान् उतथ्येनैवमुक्तस्तु अङ्गिराः प्राह तं मुनिम् ।।4.93.
Previously, there was a great conflict between Utathya and Angiras. When Utathya spoke thus, Angiras addressed that sage.
गच्छावो ब्रह्मसदनं मरीचिप्रमुखैर्द्विजैः उतथ्यः प्राह सद्ब्रह्मनृषींस्तान्स्तब्धमानसः
Let us go to the abode of Brahma, together with the twice-born led by Marichi. Utathya, his mind firm, spoke to those noble Brahmin sages.
ज्यायान्वा कतमोस्माकमिति नः कथ्यतां स्फुटम्
Let it be clearly told to us: who among us is the greater?
अथोवाच मुनिर्ब्रह्मा तावुभौ कुद्धमानसौ
Then the sage Brahma spoke to both, whose minds were agitated.
