ततस्त्रयोदशे मासि घृतधेनुसमन्विताम्
Then, in the thirteenth month, with a cow accompanied by ghee,
काञ्चनं कामदेवं च शुक्लां गां च पयस्विनीम्
One should offer gold, an image of Kāma, and a white milking cow.
होमः शुक्लतिलैः कार्यः कामनामानि कीर्तयेत्
The fire offering should be performed with white sesame seeds, reciting the names of Kāma.
विप्रेभ्यो भोजनं दद्याद्वित्त शाठ्यंविवर्जयेत्
One should give food to the brāhmaṇas, avoiding deceit regarding wealth.
यः कुर्याद्विधिनानेन मदनद्वादशीमिमाम्
Whoever performs this Madana-Dvādaśī according to this procedure,
इह लोके वरान्पुत्रान्सौभाग्यं सुखमश्नुते 4.86.
Enjoys excellent sons, good fortune, and happiness in this world.
चकाराकर्कशां भूयो रूपलावण्यसंयुताम् पुत्रं शत्रुवधार्थाय समर्थममितौजसम्
He created her again, harsh and yet endowed with beauty and charm, a son fit for the destruction of enemies, capable and of immeasurable energy.
प्रार्थयामि महाभाग्यं सर्वामरनिषूदनम्
I pray for great fortune, for the slayer of all the immortals.
संवत्सरशतं त्वेकं गर्भो धार्यः सुखेप्सया
For one hundred years, the embryo should be carried with the desire for comfort.
न स्थातव्यं न गंतव्यं वृक्षमूलेषु सर्वदा
One should never stay or go to the roots of trees at any time.
जलं न चावगाहेत शून्यागारं विवर्जयेत्
One should not immerse in water, and should avoid empty houses.
मुक्तकेशी न तिष्ठेत नाशुचिः स्यात्कथंचन
She should not stand with loose hair, nor should she ever be unclean.
न वस्तुहीना नोद्विग्ना नार्द्रपादा न भूतले
She should not be without possessions, not anxious, not with wet feet, nor on the ground.
कुर्याच्च गुरुशुश्रूषां नित्यं मंगलतत्परा
She should always serve her teacher and be devoted to auspiciousness.
कुस्त्रियो नाभिभाषेत वस्त्रवातं विवर्जयेत्
She should not speak with wicked women, and should avoid wind upon her clothing.
न शीघ्रं मार्गमाक्रामेल्लंघयेन्न महानदीम् 4.86.
She should not quickly traverse a path, nor cross a great river.
गुरु वातुलमाहारमजीर्णं न समाचरेत्
She should not consume food that is heavy, windy, or indigestible, as instructed by her teacher.
गर्भो रक्ष्यः सदौषध्या हृदि धार्यो न मत्सरः
The embryo should be protected with constant medicines, held in the heart, and not with jealousy.
अन्यथा गर्भपतनं स्तंभनं वा प्रवर्तते भविष्यति शुभः पुत्रः सर्वावयवसुंदरः
Otherwise, miscarriage or obstruction occurs; but a son will be born, auspicious and beautiful in all limbs.
स्वस्त्यस्तु ते गमिष्यामि तथेत्युक्तस्तया च सः
May there be well-being for you; I will depart. Thus spoken by her, so did he.
ततः सा कश्यपोक्तेन विधिना समतिष्ठत
Then she followed the procedure prescribed by Kashyapa.
एवमन्यापि या नारी मदनद्वादशीमि माम्
In this way, any woman who observes the Madana-Dvadasi vow for me—
एकोनमर्द्धशतमाप दितिः सुतानां येन व्रतेन बलवीर्यसमन्वितानाम्
Diti obtained forty-nine sons by that vow, endowed with strength and valor.
अबाधकव्रतवर्णनम् समुद्रतरणे दाने संग्रामे तस्करार्दने
Description of the vow that removes obstacles: in crossing the ocean, in giving, in battle, in destroying thieves—
कां देवतां स्मरेत्कृष्ण परित्राणकरीमिह
Which deity should one remember here, O Krishna, as the giver of protection?
नाप्नोति दुःखं पुरुषः संस्मरन्सर्वमङ्गलाम्
A person who remembers the all-auspicious one does not obtain suffering.
अलक्ष्यां लक्ष्यभूतानां संस्मरन्सर्वमंगलाम् ।।४ भयं समवाप्नोति पुरुषः पार्थ कुत्रचित्
When a person, O Partha, remembers the auspiciousness of the unseen among those who are visible, he experiences fear somewhere.
यदा तां प्रतिजिज्ञासुरवंत्यामहमागतः
When I came to her, desiring to inquire about her, with humility—
प्राप्तविद्येन च मया प्रतिज्ञातास्य दक्षिणा
Having acquired knowledge, I promised to give her the prescribed offering.
प्रभासतीर्थे पुत्रो मे गतः केनाप्यसौ हतः
At the Prabhāsa tirtha, my son went and was killed by someone.
