तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा ध्यानेना वेक्ष्य चाखिलम् 4.85.
Hearing those words of his, and perceiving everything through meditation—
लुब्धकस्त्वं पुरा राजन्सर्वसत्त्वभयंकरः
O king, you were once a hunter, a terror to all living beings.
यतमध्यो ह्रस्वकेशः कृष्णांगो रक्तलोचनः
You were of short stature, with short hair, dark in complexion, and red-eyed.
अभूदनावृष्टिरतीव रौद्रा कदाचि दाहारनिमित्तरोषः
There was a terrible drought, and at times, out of anger caused by hunger and thirst, you became fierce.
उन्मूल्य लोभाच्च पुरं समस्तं भ्रांतं त्वयाशेषमहत्तदा सीत्
Driven by greed, you plundered the entire city, and at that time, you wandered everywhere, causing great distress.
उपविष्टस्त्वमेकस्मिन्सभार्यो भवनांगणे
You sat alone with your wife in the courtyard of your house.
समाप्य माघमासस्य द्वादश्यां लवणाचलम्
On the twelfth day of the month of Māgha, you completed a journey to Mount Lavaṇa.
अलंकृत्य हृषीकेशं सीवर्णं परमं पदम्
You adorned Hṛṣīkeśa, the golden supreme abode.
किमेभिः कमलैः कार्यं वरं विष्णुरलंकृतः
What use are these lotuses? It is best that Viṣṇu is adorned.
तत्प्रसंगात्समभ्यर्च्य केशवं लवणाचलम्
On that occasion, having worshipped Keśava at Mount Lavaṇa—
अथानंगवती तुष्टा तयोर्होनशतत्रयम् 4.85.
Then Anaṅgavatī, being pleased, offered three hundred oblations for them.
अनंगवती च पुनस्तयोरन्नं चतुर्विधम्
And again, Anaṅgavatī gave them four kinds of food.
ताभ्यां तु तदपि त्यक्तं भोज्यावः श्वो वरानने
Even that was renounced by both of them, O beautiful-faced one, as food for tomorrow.
जन्मप्रभृति पापिष्ठावावां देवि दृढव्रते
From birth, O goddess, we two have been sinful, steadfast in our vow.
इति जागरणं ताभ्यां प्रसंगात्तदनुष्ठितम्
Thus, due to their association, they performed the vigil.
ग्रामश्च गुरवे भक्त्या विप्रेभ्यो द्वादशैव हि
The village, with devotion, was offered to the teacher, and twelve to the Brahmins.
भोजनं च सुहृन्मित्रदीनांधकृपणैः समम्
Food was shared equally with friends, companions, the poor, the blind, and the destitute.
भवाँस्तु लुब्धको जातः सपत्नीको नरेश्वरः
May you become a hunter, O king, together with your wife.
प्राप्तं सुदुर्ल्लभं वीर त्वया पुष्करमन्दिरम्
O hero, you have attained the extremely rare Puṣkara temple.
यथा कामगतं दक्षं पद्मयोनिं विरिंचिना
Just as Virinchi approached Daksha, the lotus-born, according to his desire.
शय्यानंगवती वेश्या कामदेशस्य सांप्रतम् 4.85.
The courtesan Anangavati now belongs to the region of desire.
लोकेष्वानंदजननी सकलामरपूजिता
She is the mother of joy in the worlds, worshipped by all the immortals.
इत्युक्त्वा स मुनिः सर्वं तत्रैवांतर्हितोभवत्
Having spoken thus, the sage vanished right there.
इमामाचरतो ब्रह्मन्नखण्डव्रतमाचरेत् कर्तव्याः शक्तितो देया विप्रेभ्यो दक्षिणा नृप
O Brahman, whoever practices this should observe the unbroken vow; the king must give gifts to Brahmins according to his ability.
इति कलुषविदारणं जनानामिति पठति शृणोति चातिभक्त्या
Thus, whoever recites or listens to this with great devotion destroys impurity among people.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे विभूतिद्वादशीव्रतवर्णनं नाम पंचाशीतितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttaraparva, in the dialogue between Krishna and Yudhishthira, is the fifty-fifth chapter named 'Description of the Vibhuti Dvadashi Vow.'
मदनद्वादशीव्रतवर्णनम् सुतानेकोनपंचाशद्येन लेभे दितिः पुरा
Description of the Madana Dvadashi vow: In ancient times, Diti obtained forty-nine sons.
विस्तरेण तदेवेदं मत्सकाशान्निवोधत
Now, learn this same account from me in detail.
चैत्रे मासे सिते पक्षे द्वादश्यां नियतव्रतः
In the month of Chaitra, on the twelfth day of the bright fortnight, one should observe the vow with discipline.
नानाफलयुतं तद्वदिक्षुदण्डसमन्वितम्
That should be accompanied by various fruits and a sugarcane stick.
