जलधेनुः पंचमी तु षष्ठी तु क्षीरसंभवा रसधेनुश्च नवमी दशमी स्यात्स्वरूपतः
The fifth is the water cow, the sixth arises from milk; the ninth is the essence cow, and the tenth is by its own form.
कुंभा स्युर्दशधेनूनामितरासां तु राशयः
Among the ten cows, there are pots; the rest are heaps.
मंत्रावाहनसंयुक्तां सदा पर्वणिपर्वणि
Always accompanied by invocation mantras, on every festival and holy day,
गुडधेनुप्रसंगेन सर्वास्तव मयोदिताः
All of these have been explained by me in connection with the jaggery cow.
व्रतानामुत्तमं यत्स्याद्विशोकद्वादशीव्रतम् 4.84.
Among vows, the best is the Viśoka Dvādaśī vow.
अयने विषुवे पुण्ये व्यतीपातेऽथ वा पुनः
At the solstice, the equinox, or again at the time of Vyatipāta,
विशोकद्वादशी चैषा सर्वपापहरा शुभा
This Viśoka Dvādaśī is auspicious and removes all sins.
इह लोके तु सौभाग्यमायुरारोग्यमेव च
In this world, it brings good fortune, long life, and health.
भवार्बुदसहस्राणि दश चाष्टौ च धर्मवित्
O knower of dharma, one obtains ten thousand and eight thousand years in heaven.
नारी वा कुरुते या तु विशोकद्वादशीमि माम्
Whether a woman or anyone else performs this Viśoka Dvādaśī for me,
इति पठति य इत्थं यः शृणोतीह सम्यङ् मधुपुरनरकारेरर्चनं यश्च पश्येत्
Whoever recites or properly hears this, or sees the worship of Madhupura and Naraka,
विभूतिद्वादशीव्रतवर्णनम् विभूतिद्वादशीं नाम सर्वामरनमस्कृतम्
The vow called Vibhūti Dvādaśī, honored by all the immortals,
कार्त्तिके वाथ वैशाखे मार्गशीर्षे च फाल्गुने
In Kārtika, or Vaiśākha, Mārgaśīrṣa, or Phālguna,
कृत्वा सायंतनीं संध्यां गृह्णीयान्नियमं बुधः
Having performed the evening twilight rites, the wise one should undertake the vow.
द्वादश्यां द्विजसंयुक्तः करिष्ये भोजनं विभो
On the Dvādaśī, together with the twice-born, I will partake of food, O Lord.
ततः प्रभात उत्थाय कृतस्नानजपः शुचिः
Then, rising at dawn, having bathed and recited prayers, pure—
भूतिदाय नमः पादौ विशोकाय च जानुनी
Obeisance to the giver of prosperity—at the feet; and to the remover of sorrow—at the knees.
कंदर्पाय नमो मेढ्रमादित्याय नमः करौ
Obeisance to Kāma (the god of love)—at the genitals; and to the Sun—at the hands.
माधवायेति हृदयं कंठं वैकुंठिने नमः
Obeisance to Mādhava—at the heart; and to Vaikuṇṭha—at the throat.
पृष्ठं शार्ङ्गधरायेति श्रवणौ वरदाय वै
Obeisance to Śārṅgadhara—at the back; and to Varada—at the ears.
सर्वात्मने शिरो राजन्नम इत्यभिपूजयेत् 4.85.
Obeisance to the all-pervading one—at the head, O King; thus one should worship.
दत्तात्रेयं यथा व्यासमुत्पलेन समन्वितम्
Dattātreya, as well as Vyāsa, accompanied by Utpalā.
समाप्यैवं यथाशक्त्या द्वादश द्वादशीर्नरः शय्यां दद्यान्मुनिश्रेष्ठ गुरवे रससंयुताम्
Having thus completed, as one is able, twelve Dvādaśī observances, a man should offer a bed with delicacies to the best of sages and to the teacher.
ग्रामं च शक्तिमान्दद्यात्क्षेत्रं वा भवनान्वितम्
One who is able should give a village or a field along with a house.
अन्यानपि यथाशक्त्या भोजयित्वा द्विजोत्तमान्
And, according to his ability, after feeding other excellent Brāhmaṇas as well.
अल्पवित्तो यथाशक्त्या स्तोकंस्तोकं समाचरेत् पुप्पार्चनविधानेन स कुर्याद्वत्सरत्रयम्
One with little wealth should, as able, perform little by little, with the method of flower-offering, for three years.
अनेन विधिना यस्तु विभूतिद्वादशीव्रतम्
Whoever observes the Vibhūti Dvādaśī vow according to this procedure—
जन्मनां शतसाहस्रं न शोकफलभाग्भवेत्
For a hundred thousand births, he will not experience the fruit of sorrow.
वैष्णवो वाथ शैवो वा भवेजन्मनिजन्मनि तावत्स्वर्गे वसेद्राजन्भूपतिश्च पुनर्भवेत्
Whether a devotee of Viṣṇu or of Śiva, in every birth, O King, he will dwell in heaven and be born again as a ruler.
पुरा रथंतरे कल्पे राजासीत्पुष्पवाहनः
Long ago, in the Rathaṃtara Kalpa, there was a king named Puṣpavāhana.
