वासुदेवाय पादौ तु कटिं संकर्षणाय च
To Vāsudeva, the feet; to Saṅkarṣaṇa, the waist.
चक्रपाणिं भुजौ कंठं मुखं भूपतये तथा 4.83.
To the wielder of the discus, the arms; to the Lord of the earth, the neck and the face.
एवमभ्यर्च्य मेधावी प्राग्वत्तस्याग्रतो घटम् कांचनं वासुदेवेति चक्रबाहुं सनातनम्
Having thus worshipped, the wise one should, as before, place before him a pot of gold, as Vāsudeva, the eternal one with the discus in hand.
तमभ्यर्च्य विधानेन गंधपुष्पादिभिः क्रमात्
He should worship him according to the prescribed method, with fragrances, flowers, and so on, in order.
मन्वंतराणि षट्त्रिंशत्ततः कालात्यये पुनः दाता यशःक्षमायुक्तस्ततो निर्वाणमाप्नुयात्
After thirty-six Manvantaras, at the end of that time, the giver endowed with fame and patience attains liberation.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच एवमेवं श्रावणे तु मासि संकल्प्य द्वादशीम्
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: In this same way, in the month of Śrāvaṇa, having resolved to observe the twelfth day—
बुधाय पादौ संपूज्य श्रीधरायेति वै कटिम्
To Budha, worship the feet; to Śrīdhara, indeed, the waist.
सुग्रीवायेति वै कण्ठं भुजौ वै चित्रबाहवे
To Sugrīva, indeed, the neck; to Citrabāhu, the arms.
अनेन विधिना सर्वां द्वादशीं समुपोषितः
Having observed the entire twelfth day with this procedure—
महतीं च श्रियं प्राप्य पुत्रपौत्रसमन्वितः 4.83.
He obtains great prosperity, surrounded by sons and grandsons.
एष ते विधिरुद्दिष्टः श्रावणे मासि सत्तम किं पुनर्द्वादशैवात्र दद्युरैन्द्रं महत्पदम्
This procedure has been prescribed for you in the month of Śrāvaṇa, O best of men; what then if one were to give on the twelfth day itself? He would attain the great position of Indra.
तद्वद्भाद्रपदे मासि शुक्लपक्षे तु द्वादशीम्
Likewise, in the month of Bhādrapada, on the twelfth day of the bright fortnight—
नमोऽस्तु कल्किने पादौ हृषीकेशाय वै कटिम्
Homage to Kalki, the feet; to Hṛṣīkeśa, indeed, the waist.
शितिकण्ठाय कण्ठं तु खड्गपाणीति वै भुजौ
To Śitikaṇṭha, the neck; to Khaḍgapāṇi, indeed, the arms.
एवमभ्यर्च्य मेधावी प्राग्वत्तस्याग्रतो घटम्
Having thus worshipped, the wise one should, as before, place before him a pot.
सितवस्त्रयुगच्छन्नं गंधपुष्पोपशोभितम्
Covered with a pair of white garments, adorned with fragrance and flowers.
एवं कृते भवेद्यत्तु तन्निबोध नृपोत्तम
Now, O best of kings, listen to what results when this is done.
पूज्यते मत्स्यरूपेण सर्वज्ञत्वमभीप्सुभिः
He is worshipped in the form of a fish by those who seek all-knowing wisdom.
भवोदधिनिमग्नैस्तु वाराहः पूज्यते हरिः
When submerged in the ocean of existence, Hari is worshipped as the Boar.
वामनं मोहनाशाय वित्तार्थे जमदग्निजम् 4.83.
Vāmana is for the removal of delusion; Jamadagni’s son for the sake of wealth.
बलकृष्णौ यजेद्धीमान्पुत्रकामो न संशयः सर्वां दत्त्वा विधानेन पूजां प्राप्नोति वांछितम्
The wise one desiring a son should worship Bala and Krishna—there is no doubt; by giving everything according to the rite, he attains the desired worship.
संकल्प्याभ्यर्चयेद्देवं पद्मनाभं सनातनम्
With resolve, one should worship the eternal Lord Padmanabha.
पद्मनाभाय पादौ तु कटिं वै पद्मयोनये अव्ययाय तथा शीर्षं प्राग्वदस्त्राणि पूजयेत्
To Padmanabha, offer the feet; to Padmayoni, the waist; and to the Imperishable, the head—worship the weapons as before.
ततस्तस्याग्रतः कुंभं माल्यवस्त्रसमन्वितम्
Then, in front of him, place a pot adorned with garlands and cloth.
रात्रौ तु जागरं कृत्वा प्रभाते विमले ततः
Having kept vigil at night, then in the pure morning—
एवं कृते तु यत्पुण्यं तद्वक्तुं शक्यते कथम् नश्यंति कृतपुण्यस्य विष्णोर्नामानुकीर्तनात्
How can the merit gained by doing this be described? The merit perishes by reciting the names of Vishnu.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच शृणु राजन्महाबाहो कार्तिके मासि द्वादशीम्
Śrī Krishna said: Hear, O king of mighty arms, about the twelfth day in the month of Kartika.
प्राग्विधानेन संकल्प्य वासुदेवं प्रपूजयेत् नमो दामोदरायेति सर्वाङ्गं पूजयेद्धरिम्
With prior resolve, one should worship Vāsudeva according to the rite, and, saying 'Salutations to Dāmodara,' worship Hari’s whole body.
एवं संपूज्य विधिना तस्याश्च चतुरो घटान्
Thus, having worshipped according to the procedure, also worship four pots for her.
स्रग्दामालंबितग्रीवान्सितवस्त्रैश्च गुण्ठितान् 4.83.
They should have garlands hanging from their necks and be wrapped in white cloth.
