भक्ष्यैर्बहुविधै राजन्फलैः पुष्पैश्च शोभितम्
It should be adorned with many kinds of food, fruits, and flowers, O King.
रसातलगता वेदा यथा देव त्वयाहृताः 4.83.
Just as, O god, you retrieved the Vedas that had gone to the netherworld.
एवमुच्चार्य तस्याग्रे जागरं तत्र कारयेत् चतुर्णां ब्राह्मणानां तु चतुरो दापयेद्धटान्
Having recited thus, one should keep vigil there in front of it, and give four pots to four Brahmins.
पूर्वं तु बह्वृचे दयाच्छंदोगे दक्षिणं तथा
First, the Bahvricha should be given the eastern one, and the Chhandoga the southern one.
उत्तरं कामतो दद्याद्देश एव विधिक्रमात्
The northern one may be given as desired, according to the proper order of the region.
यजुषः पश्चिमो नाम्ना आथर्वायोत्तरं तथा
The western one is for the Yajurveda by name, and the northern one likewise for the Atharvaveda.
ततस्तं जलपात्रस्थं ब्राह्मणाय कुटुंबिने
Then, the vessel containing water should be given to a Brahmin householder.
ब्राह्मणान्पायसान्नेन ततः पश्चात्स्वयं गृही
The Brahmins should then be fed with rice cooked in milk, and afterwards the householder himself.
अनेन विधिना यस्तु द्वादशीं क्षपयेन्नरः
Whoever observes the Dvadashi in this manner, O man,
यदि वक्त्रसहस्राणि भवंति हि युगेयुगे तदस्य फलसंख्यानं कर्तुं शक्यं न धारयेत्
Even if there are thousands of mouths in every age, the results of this cannot be fully described or comprehended.
यः कृष्णद्वादशीमेतामनेन विधिना नृप
O King, whoever observes this Krishna Dvadashi by this procedure,
ब्रह्महत्यादिपापानि जन्मांतरकृतान्यपि 4.83.
Even sins such as the killing of a Brahmin, or those committed in previous births,
तथैव पौषमासेन अमृतं मथितं सुरैः
Just as in the month of Pausha, the nectar was churned by the gods,
तस्येयं तिथिरुद्दिष्टा हरेर्वै कूर्मरूपिणः
So this date is declared to belong to Hari in the form of a tortoise.
तस्यां प्राग्वत्संकल्पः प्रातःस्नानादिकाः क्रियाः प्रीयमंत्रैर्नृपश्रेष्ठ देवदेवं जगद्गुरुम्
There, as before, one should make a resolve and perform the morning bath and other rites, O best of kings, and with pleasing mantras worship the Lord of gods, the Teacher of the universe.
कूर्माय पादौ प्रथमं सुपूज्य नाराणायेति कटिं हरेस्तु
First, worship the feet as belonging to Kurma, and the waist of Hari with the mantra 'Narayana'.
सुबाहवेत्येव भुजौ शिरश्च सर्वात्मने पांडव पूजनीयौ
With the mantra 'Subahu', worship the arms, and the head as belonging to the All-pervading One, O Pandava.
एभिर्मन्त्रैः पुष्पसुगन्धधूपैर्नैवे द्यदीपैर्विविधैः फलैश्च
With these mantras, worship with flowers, fragrant incense, offerings of food, lamps, and various fruits.
तं रत्नगर्भं सुसुगंधतोयं कृत्वा ततो हेममयं स्वश क्त्या
Then, having prepared pure, fragrant water with jewels, make a golden vessel with your own means.
घृतैश्च पूर्णे कलशाऽग्रसंस्थं संपूजयेज्जागरनृत्यगीतैः निर्वर्त्य सर्वं विधिवत्ततश्च भुञ्जीत संतुष्टमनाः सभृत्यः
Place it filled with ghee at the top of the pot, and worship with wakeful songs and dances; having completed everything properly, then eat with a satisfied mind together with your attendants.
एवं कृते कल्पयुगांतराणि स्वर्गे वसेत्सर्वसमृद्धकामः
By performing thus, one dwells in heaven for the duration of many ages of the world, with all desires fulfilled.
संसारचक्रं स विहाय शीघ्रमाप्नोति लोके तु हरेः पुराणे 4.83.
Abandoning the cycle of worldly existence, he quickly attains the ancient abode of Hari in this very world.
अनेकजन्मार्जितसंयुतानि नश्यंति पापानि नरस्य भक्त्या
The sins accumulated over many births are destroyed by a man's devotion.
एवं माघे सिते पक्षे द्वादशीं धरणीधर
Thus, on the twelfth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Magha, O Upholder of the Earth,
प्रागुक्तेन विधानेन स्नानं संकल्पमेव च
One should perform the bath and the resolve as previously described.
धूपनैवेद्यगंधैस्तु अर्चयित्वा पुनर्नरः
After worshipping with incense, offerings of food, and fragrances, the man should again—
वराहायेति पादौ तु माधवायेति वै कटिम्
Recite 'Varaha' for the feet, and 'Madhava' for the waist.
पूर्वत्रायेति कंठं तु प्रजानां पतये शिरः
Recite 'Purvatra' for the neck, and for the head, 'Lord of creatures'.
अमृतोद्भवाय शंखं तु गदिने च गदां तथा
For the conch, recite 'Amritodbhava', and for the mace, recite 'Gadine'.
सौवर्णं रूप्यं ताम्रं वा पात्रं विभवशक्तितः
A vessel of gold, silver, or copper should be used according to one's means.
