By means of fasts, vows, and various disciplines, the goddess was raised up, and Achyuta established her in her place.
When the month of Mārgaśīrṣa arrives, on the tenth day, with self-control,
Wearing clean garments, with a serene mind, having very little and well-prepared food,
One should make an object measuring eight fingers, produced from a milky tree.
Touching it, setting aside other actions, and meditating long upon Janārdana,
At that time, O illustrious one, one should utter these words: 'O lotus-eyed one, I will partake; O Achyuta, be my refuge.'
Having spoken thus, then, in the presence of the god of gods,
Then, at dawn, pure, one should go to a river that flows to the ocean.
Bringing pure clay, O man, with this mantra: 'By this essence, protect me; O virtuous one, free me from sin.'
The sacred fords within the cosmic egg, touched by your hands, O radiant one,
Thus is the mantra for beholding Aditi; having done this three times, draw a circle in the water with a pure heart.
Then, having bathed properly, the man, as an attendant of the universal sovereign,
Having worshipped the great yogin, the lord Nārāyaṇa,
The pair of thighs to Nṛsiṃha, the chest to the bearer of Śrīvatsa,
For the conquest of the three worlds, the arms to the all-pervading one, the head,
And the mace to the deep one, for fearlessness, to the form of peace.
Then, in front of that, the wise should place four pots.
With four vessels of sesame, set in place and adorned with gems.
In the midst of these, a seat covered with cloth should be placed; and in its center, a vessel filled with water should be set.
A golden image of the god Janardana in the form of a fish should be fashioned.
It should be adorned with many kinds of food, fruits, and flowers, O King.
Just as, O god, you retrieved the Vedas that had gone to the netherworld.
Having recited thus, one should keep vigil there in front of it, and give four pots to four Brahmins.
First, the Bahvricha should be given the eastern one, and the Chhandoga the southern one.
The northern one may be given as desired, according to the proper order of the region.
The western one is for the Yajurveda by name, and the northern one likewise for the Atharvaveda.
Then, the vessel containing water should be given to a Brahmin householder.
The Brahmins should then be fed with rice cooked in milk, and afterwards the householder himself.
Whoever observes the Dvadashi in this manner, O man,
Even if there are thousands of mouths in every age, the results of this cannot be fully described or comprehended.
