यथैक एव धर्मात्मा वासुदेवो व्यवस्थितः 4.82.
Just as the one righteous soul, Vāsudeva, is established.
प्रयातु सुकृतस्यास्तु ममानुदिवसञ्जयः
May the fruit of my good deeds bring me success day after day.
एवमुच्चार्य विप्राय दद्याद्यत्कथितं तव
Having spoken thus, one should give to the brāhmaṇa whatever has been prescribed by you.
पारणांते तु देवेश प्रीणनं शक्तितो नृप
At the conclusion of the fast, O Lord of the gods, one should offer worship as one is able, O King.
एवं संवत्सरस्यांते कांचनीं प्रतिमां हरेः
In this way, at the end of the year, a golden image of Hari should be given.
गां सवत्सां च विप्राय दद्याच्छ्रद्धासमन्वितः
With faith, one should give to a brāhmaṇa a cow with its calf.
तस्मिन्नहनि दातव्यं भोजने चानिवारितम् द्वादशी नरकं पार्थ यामुपोष्य न पश्यति
On that day, giving food is not forbidden; O son of Pṛthā, one who observes the Dvādaśī fast does not see hell.
नाग्नयो न च शस्त्राणि न च लोहमुखाः खगाः
There are no fires, nor weapons, nor birds with iron beaks.
नामोच्चारणमात्रेण विष्णोः क्षीणाघसंचयः
By merely uttering the name of Viṣṇu, the accumulation of sins is diminished.
नमो नारायण हरे वासुदेवेति कीर्तयन्
Chanting 'Obeisance to Nārāyaṇa, Hari, Vāsudeva,'
तस्मात्पाखंडिसंसर्गमकुर्वन्द्वादशीमिमाम् 4.82.
Therefore, one should not associate with heretics while observing this Dvādaśī.
पापं क्षिणोति सुकृतस्य करोति वृद्धिं वृद्धिं प्रयच्छति नियच्छति सर्वदोषान्
It destroys sin, increases merit, grants growth, and removes all faults.
धरणीव्रतवर्णनम् स देवः पुण्डरीकाक्षः स्वयं नारायणो हरिः
That god, lotus-eyed, is himself Nārāyaṇa, Hari.
स यज्ञैर्विविधैरिष्टैर्व्रतैश्च यदुसत्तम
O best of the Yadus, he is worshipped with various sacrifices, offerings, and vows.
बहुवित्तेन भगवन्नृत्विग्भिर्वेदपारगैः
By great wealth, O blessed one, and by priests learned in the Vedas.
वित्तेन च विना दानं दातुं कृष्ण न शक्यते
Without wealth, O Kṛṣṇa, it is not possible to give gifts.
तस्य मोक्षः कथं कृष्ण सर्वथा दुर्ल्लभो हरिः तन्मे सामान्यतो ब्रूहि सर्ववर्णेषु यद्भवेत्
How, O Kṛṣṇa, is liberation possible for him, since Hari is always difficult to attain? Tell me in general what may be for all castes.
धरण्या यत्कृतं पूर्वं मज्जन्त्या वसुधातले
What was formerly done by the earth as she was sinking into the ground.
पृथिव्याः पार्थिव पुरा संजातः संगमोऽम्बुभिः
O king, in ancient times, there was a union of the earth with the waters.
सा भूतधात्री धरणी रसातलगता शुभा
That auspicious earth, the supporter of all beings, descended into the netherworld.
उपवासव्रतैर्देवी नियमैश्च पृथग्विधैः उज्जहार स्थितौ चेमां स्थापयामास चाच्युतः
By means of fasts, vows, and various disciplines, the goddess was raised up, and Achyuta established her in her place.
प्राप्ते मार्गशिरे मासे दशम्यां नियतात्मवान् 4.83.
When the month of Mārgaśīrṣa arrives, on the tenth day, with self-control,
शुचिवासाः प्रसन्नात्मा ह्यत्यल्पान्न सुसंस्कृतम्
Wearing clean garments, with a serene mind, having very little and well-prepared food,
कृत्वाष्टांगुलमात्रं तु क्षीरवृक्षसमुद्भवम्
One should make an object measuring eight fingers, produced from a milky tree.
स्पृष्ट्वा न्यस्यान्यकर्माणि चिरं ध्यात्वा जनार्दनम्
Touching it, setting aside other actions, and meditating long upon Janārdana,
एवमुच्चारयेद्वाचं तस्मिन्काले महाद्युते संभोक्ष्ये पुण्डरीकाक्ष शरणं मे भवाच्युत
At that time, O illustrious one, one should utter these words: 'O lotus-eyed one, I will partake; O Achyuta, be my refuge.'
एवमुक्त्वा ततो देव देवदेवस्य सन्निधौ
Having spoken thus, then, in the presence of the god of gods,
ततः प्रभाते विमले नदीं गत्वा समुद्रगाम्
Then, at dawn, pure, one should go to a river that flows to the ocean.
आनीय मृत्तिकां शुद्धां मंत्रेणानेन मानवः तेन सत्त्वेन मां पाहि पापान्मोचय सुव्रते
Bringing pure clay, O man, with this mantra: 'By this essence, protect me; O virtuous one, free me from sin.'
ब्रह्माण्डोदरतीर्थानि करैः स्पृष्टानि ते रवेः
The sacred fords within the cosmic egg, touched by your hands, O radiant one,
