न जुहोत्युदिते काले न ददात्यतितृष्णया
He did not offer oblations at the proper time, nor give charity due to excessive greed.
नित्यनैमित्तिकानां च हानिं चक्रे स्वकर्मणा 4.82.
Through his own actions, he caused loss in both daily and occasional duties.
कालेनागच्छतासोऽथ मृतो विंध्याटवीतटे
With time passing, he died on the edge of the Vindhya forest.
तं ददर्श महाभागो दिव्ययानसमन्वितः भास्करस्याशुभिर्द्दीप्तैर्दहंतमतिदारुणैः
A highly fortunate one saw him, accompanied by a divine vehicle, being scorched by the fierce rays of the sun.
प्रतप्तवालुकामध्ये तृषार्तं चातिपीडितम् निष्क्रांतजिह्वमंगेषु विस्फोटैः सर्वतश्चितम्
In the midst of burning sand, tormented by thirst and extreme suffering, his tongue protruded, and his body was covered everywhere with blisters.
निश्वासायासखेदेन विह्वलं पीडितोदरम्
He was distressed, his breath labored, his belly afflicted and weakened by exhaustion.
तथादृशमथो दृष्ट्वा गर्दभेयो महानृषिः
Seeing him thus, the great sage Gardabha beheld him.
जानन्नपि यथाप्राप्तं तस्यानुष्ठानजं फलम्
Knowing well the result arising from his actions, as obtained.
उपर्यर्ककरैस्तीक्ष्णैस्तृषावातनिपीडितम्
He was tormented above by the sharp rays of the sun and by the wind of thirst.
अन्यस्तत्राणकैर्घोरैरविषह्यैः सुदारुणैः
Another was there, afflicted by terrible, unbearable, and extremely fierce protectors.
तस्यैतद्वचनं श्रुत्वा विपीतस्य सवेदनः
Hearing these words, he suffered, full of pain.
अशाश्वते शाश्वतधीस्तेन दह्यामि दुर्मतिः ।। 4.82.
Because of impermanent and permanent thoughts, I, of wicked mind, am burned.
इदं करिष्याम्यपरं त्विदं कृत्वा त्विदं पुनः
I will do this, then do that, and again do this after that.
शीतोष्णवर्षादिभवं लोभात्सोढं मयाऽशुभम्
Out of greed, I endured the evil arising from cold, heat, rain, and the like.
पितृदेवमनुप्याणामदत्त्वा यापिता हि ये
Those who have passed on without giving to ancestors, gods, or humans—
पुत्रक्षेत्रकलत्रेषु ममत्वाहृतचेतसा
Whose minds were seized by attachment to sons, land, and wives—
मृते मयि धने तस्मिन्नन्यायोपार्जिते सदा
When I died, that wealth, always unjustly acquired—
न मया पूजिता गेहान्निर्गता द्विजसत्तमाः
O best of twice-born, I did not honor them, and they departed from my house.
यन्मे न पूजिता देवाः कुटुंबं पोषितं परम्
Because I did not worship the gods, though I greatly sustained my family—
नित्यं नैमित्तिकं कर्म पूर्वेषां चैव नो कृतम्
The daily and occasional rites, and those for the ancestors, were not performed by me.
दाराः पुत्राश्च भृत्याश्च पापबुद्ध्या मया भृताः
With sinful intent, I maintained wives, sons, and servants.
दाराः पुत्राश्च भृत्यार्थे मया न्यायार्थसंचयः 4.82.
For the sake of wives, sons, and servants, I gathered wealth by just means.
क्षतपापं मया भुक्तमन्यैस्तत्कर्म संचितम्
I consumed what was tainted by sin, while others enjoyed the fruits of my actions.
यन्ममत्वाभिभूतेन मया पापमुपार्जितम्
Whatever sin I accumulated, overpowered by attachment—
अंतर्दुःखेन दग्धोऽहं बहिर्दह्यामि भावयन्
Burned within by hidden sorrow, I am scorched outwardly as I reflect.
कुरु तस्मात्समुद्धारं पश्यस्यमृतसागरम्
Therefore, deliver me, for you see the immortal ocean.
प्रक्षीणं पापमेतावत्सुवृत्तं चास्ति ते परम्
Your sin is now diminished, and your conduct is supremely virtuous.
प्रतीते दशमे जन्मन्यच्युताराधनेच्छया न च तस्याः प्रसादेन पापमत्यन्तदुर्जयम्
In the tenth birth, with the desire to worship the infallible, and not by her grace, is the most difficult sin overcome.
अल्पैरहोभिः संक्षीणमामपात्रे यथा जलम्
In a few days, sin is diminished, as water in an unbaked vessel.
नाशं पापस्य कुरुते जयं सुकृतकर्मणः
He does not bring about the destruction of sin, but the victory of virtuous deeds.
