हरिमुद्दिश्य चैवाग्नौ घृतहोमकृतक्रियः
And, with Hari as the aim, one should perform the ritual of offering ghee into the fire—
पातालसंस्थां वसुधां यां प्रसाद्य मनोरथा
Having pleased the earth, which is situated in the netherworld, by means of desires—
यमभ्यर्च्य दिवि प्राप्तः सकलांश्च मनोरथान्
Having worshipped him, one attains heaven and all desires—
मनोरथानभिनवान्प्राप्तवांश्च मनोहरान् भुञ्जीत प्रयतः सम्यग्हविष्यं पांडुनन्दन
Having obtained new and delightful desires, O son of Pāṇḍu, one should partake of the sacrificial food with proper effort—
फाल्गुने चैत्रे वैशाखे ज्येष्ठे मासि च सत्तम
In the months of Phālguna, Caitra, Vaiśākha, and Jyeṣṭha, O noble one—
रक्तपुष्पैश्च चतुरो मासा न्कुर्वीत चार्चनम्
One should perform worship for four months with red flowers—
हविष्यान्नं च नैवेद्यमात्मनश्चापि भोजनम् 4.80.१
Sacrificial food should be offered as naivedya, and one should also eat it oneself—
जातीपुष्पाणि धूपश्च शस्तः सार्जरसो नृप
Jāti flowers, incense, and the best resin from the sāl tree are recommended, O king—
स्वयं तदेव चाश्नीयाच्छेषं पूर्ववदाचरेत्
One should eat that very offering oneself, and perform the remainder as before—
सुगंधिश्चेच्छया धूपं पूजा भृंगारकेन च
If fragrant, incense should be offered at will, and worship performed with the bhṛṅgāra vessel—
प्रतिमासं च विप्राय दातव्या दक्षिणा तथा
Each month, a gift should be given to a Brahmin as a proper offering.
यथाशक्त्या यथाप्रीत्या वित्तशाठ्यं विवर्जयेत्
According to one's ability and devotion, one should give, avoiding any deceit regarding wealth.
पारणांते यथाशक्ति स्नापितः पूजितो हरिः
At the conclusion of the fast, as able, Lord Hari should be bathed and worshipped.
वर्षांते प्रतिमामिष्टां कारयित्वा सुशोभनाम्
At the end of the year, one should have a beautiful image made as desired.
पुष्पवस्त्रयुगच्छन्नां ब्राह्मणाय निवेदयेत्
Covered with a pair of flowers and cloth, it should be presented to a Brahmin.
द्वादशात्र प्रदातव्याः कुंभाः सान्नजलाक्षताः
On the twelfth day, pots filled with water and rice should be given.
एषा पुण्या पापहरा द्वादशी फलमिच्छताम् 4.80.
This sacred and sin-destroying twelfth day is for those who desire its fruit.
पूरयत्यखिलान्भक्त्या यतश्चैषां मनोरथान्
By devotion, it fulfills all their wishes.
उपोष्यैतां त्रिभुवनं लब्धमिन्द्रेण वै पुरा
By observing this fast, the three worlds were once obtained by Indra.
धौम्येनाध्ययनं प्राप्तमन्यैश्चाभिमतं फलम्
By Dhaumya, study was attained, and by others, the desired result.
यंयं काममभिध्याय व्रतमेतदुपोषितम्
Whatever desire one contemplates while observing this vow and fast,
अपुत्रो लभते पुत्रमधनो लभते धनम्
The childless obtain a son, the poor obtain wealth.
समागमं प्रवसनैरुपोष्यैतामवाप्यते
By observing this, those separated by travel attain reunion.
नापुत्रो नाधनो ज्येष्ठो वियोगी न च निर्गुणः
None remain childless, poor, eldest, separated, or lacking qualities.
स्वर्गलोके सहस्राणि वर्षाणामयुतानि च
In heaven, for thousands and tens of thousands of years,
इह पुण्यवतां नॄणां धनिनां लघुशालिनाम्
Here, among the virtuous, the wealthy, and those of light burden,
न द्वादशीमुपवसन्ति मनोरथाख्यां नैवार्चयंति पुरुषोत्तममादिदेवम् 4.80.
Those who do not observe the twelfth day called Manoratha, nor worship the Supreme Person, the original Lord, do not attain these results.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे मनोरथद्वादशीव्रतवर्णनं नामाशीतितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the eightieth chapter named 'Description of the Manoratha Dvadashi Vow' in the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Yudhishthira, in the Uttaraparvan of the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana.
उल्कानवमीव्रतवर्णनम् पापं प्रशममायाति येन तद्वक्तुमर्हसि
You should describe that by which sin is pacified.
यामुपोष्य परं पुण्यमाप्नुयाच्छ्रद्धयान्वितः
By observing which, one endowed with faith attains supreme merit.
