विप्राय दक्षिणां दद्याद्यथाशक्त्या नराधिप
A king should give a gift to a Brahmin according to his ability.
पाखंडिभिर्विकर्मस्थैरालापांश्च विवर्जयेत्
He should avoid conversations with heretics and those who act unrighteously.
गोदोहतः समुद्भूतं प्राश्नीयादात्मशुद्धये
For the sake of self-purification, one should eat what is produced from the milking of a cow.
तेनैव नाम्ना संपूज्य दत्त्वा विप्राय दक्षिणाम्
After worshipping with that very name and giving a gift to a Brahmin,
एवमेवाखिलान्मासानुपोष्य प्रयतः शुचिः
In this way, being devoted and pure, one should fast in all the months.
पारिते च पुनर्वषे गोविन्दं पद्मया सह
And at the end of the year, together with Padma, one should worship Govinda again.
विशेषतः पुनर्दद्यात्तस्मिन्नह्नि गवाह्निकम् 4.78.
On that day in particular, one should again give the daily offering to cows.
स्वर्णशृंगं रौप्यखुरं गोशतैर्वृषभं वरम्
A bull with golden horns, silver hooves, and a hundred cows should be given as an excellent gift.
तदाप्नोत्यखिलं सम्यग्व्रतमेतदुपोषितः
Having observed this vow in its entirety, one attains all benefits completely.
गोविन्दद्वादशीमेतां समुपोष्य विधानतः
By properly observing this Govinda Dvadashi,
गोविन्दमर्चयति गोरसभोजनस्तु गा वै विनोदयति तद्वद्गवाह्निकश्च
One worships Govinda, eats cow's milk products, delights the cows, and likewise performs the daily cow rites.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तर पर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे गोविन्दद्वादशीव्रतवर्णनं नामाष्टसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttara Parva, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Yudhishthira, this is the seventy-eighth chapter named 'Description of the Govinda Dvadashi Vow.'
अखण्डद्वादशीव्रतवर्णनम् दानधर्मे कृतं यस्य विपाकं वद यादृशः
Description of the Akhanda Dvadashi Vow: Tell me, what is the result of the merit produced by giving in charity?
वैकल्यात्फलवैकल्यं यादृश तच्छृणुष्व मे
Listen to me about the deficiency in results that arises from imperfection.
उपवासान्विना खण्डं प्राप्नुवंत्येव ताञ्छृणु
Hear now: those who neglect fasting receive only a partial result.
रूपं तथोत्तरं प्राप्य व्रतवैकल्यदोषतः
Due to faults in their observance, they attain only a lesser form or outcome.
उपवासी नरः पत्नीं नारीं प्राप्य तथा पतिम्
A man who fasts attains a wife, and a woman likewise attains a husband.
ये द्रव्ये सत्यदातारस्तथान्ने सत्यनग्नयः
Those who give wealth truthfully, and those who offer food with sincerity—
वस्त्रानुलेपनैर्हीना भूषणैश्चातिरूपिणः
Even if lacking in clothing, ointments, or ornaments, they become exceedingly beautiful.
ते सर्वे व्रतवैकल्यात्फल वैकल्यमागताः उपवासेन कर्तव्यं वैकल्याद्विकलं फलम्
All these, due to imperfect observance, receive imperfect results; fasting must be done, for from imperfection comes an incomplete fruit.
किं तत्र वद कर्तव्यमच्छिद्रं येन जायते
Tell me, what should be done there so that the result is flawless?
वैकल्यं प्रशमं याति शृणुष्व गदतो मम कृतोपवासो देवेशं समभ्यर्च्य जनार्दनम्
Listen as I speak: imperfection is pacified when, having performed the fast, one worships Janardana, the Lord of the gods.
स्नातो नारायणं ब्रूयाद्भुञ्जन्नारायणं तथा
Having bathed, one should address Nārāyaṇa, and likewise, while eating, remember Nārāyaṇa.
पञ्चगव्यजलस्नातो विशुद्धात्मा जितेन्द्रियः इदमुच्चारयेत्पश्चाद्देवस्य पुरतो हरेः
Having bathed in the five products of the cow, with a purified mind and controlled senses, one should then recite this before Lord Hari.
सप्तजन्मनि यत्किञ्चिन्मया खण्डव्रतं कृतम्
Whatever imperfect vow I have performed in seven lifetimes—
यथाखंडं जगत्सर्वं त्वमेव पुरुषोत्तम
Just as you, O Supreme Person, are the whole and undivided universe—
चतुर्भिरपि मासैस्तु पारणं प्रथमं स्मृतम्
The first breaking of the fast is prescribed even after four months.
चैत्रादिषु च मासेषु चतुर्गुण्यं तु पारणम्
In the months beginning with Caitra, the breaking of the fast is four times more meritorious.
श्रावणादिषु मासेषु कार्त्तिकांतेषु पारणम्
In the months beginning with Śrāvaṇa and ending with Kārttika, the breaking of the fast is prescribed.
सौवर्णं रौप्यं ताम्रं च मृन्मयं पात्रमिष्यते
A vessel of gold, silver, copper, or clay is considered suitable.
