दृष्ट्वा तु वामनं जातं यदि सा वक्तुमुद्यता
Seeing that Vamana was born, she was ready to speak.
एकादश्यां भाद्रपदे श्रवणेन नरोत्तम
On the eleventh day of the month Bhadrapada, under the star Shravan, O best of men,
भयं बभूव दैत्यानां देवानां तोष आभवत्
Fear arose among the demons, and satisfaction came to the gods.
चकार कश्यपो धीमान्प्रजापतिरनुद्यतः
Kashyapa, the wise Prajapati, performed the rites without delay.
कुशस्वच्छोदकधरः कमंडलुविभूषितः
Holding pure water and decorated with a water-pot, he stood upon sacred grass.
दृष्ट्वा बलिमथोवाच वामनोऽभ्येत्य तत्क्षणम्
Seeing Bali, Vamana approached and spoke to him at that very moment.
पादत्रयप्रमाणेन पठनार्थे स्थितो ह्यसि 4.76.
You stand here for the purpose of recitation, measured by three steps.
ततो वर्द्धितुमारब्धो वामनोऽनंतविक्रमः
Then Vamana, of infinite stride, began to grow.
ताभ्यामिंद्रादिकाँल्लोकाँल्ललाटे ब्रह्मणः पदम्
With those two steps, he reached the worlds of Indra and others, and the abode of Brahma on the forehead.
तद्दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं सिद्धा देवर्षयस्तथा
Seeing that great wonder, the Siddhas and divine sages likewise,
ततो दैत्यगणान्सर्वाञ्जित्वा त्रिभुवनं वशी
Then, having conquered all the hosts of demons, he became master of the three worlds.
तत्र त्वमीप्सितान्भोगान्भुक्त्वा मद्बाहुपालितः
There, enjoying the desired pleasures, protected by my arms,
एवमुक्तो बलिः प्रायान्नमस्कृत्य नरोत्तमम्
Thus addressed, Bali departed after bowing to the best of men.
स्वानि धिष्ण्यानि गच्छध्वं तिष्ठध्वं विगत ज्वराः
Return to your own seats; remain free from distress.
देवः कृत्वा जगत्कार्यं तत्रैवांतर्द्धिमागमत् । तेनेष्टा देवदेवस्य सर्वदा विजया तिथिः
The god, having accomplished the work of the world, then vanished there; from that time, the day has always been auspicious for worship of the Lord of gods.
एषा वै फाल्गुने मासि पुष्येण सहिता नृप
O king, this occurs in the month of Phalguna, together with the star Pushya.
एकादश्यां सोपवासो रात्रौ संपूजयेद्धरिम् 4.76.
On the eleventh day, one should fast and worship Hari at night.
कुंडिकां स्थापयेत्पार्श्वे छत्रं वै पादुके तथा
Place a water vessel at the side, as well as an umbrella and sandals.
आच्छाद्य पात्रं वासोभिः फलैश्चापि सुशोभनैः
Cover the vessel with cloths and also with beautiful fruits.
तिलाढकेन वित्ताढ्यः प्रस्थेन कुडवेन वा
One who is wealthy should offer a measure of sesame seeds, or a prastha, or a kudava.
पुष्पैर्गंधैर्धूपदीपैः पक्वान्नै रर्चयेद्धरिम्
Worship Hari with flowers, fragrances, incense, lamps, and cooked food.
स्वस्ववित्तानुसारेण सहिरण्यं च कारयेत् भक्तिमांश्च गुणोपेतं कोटिकोटिगुणोत्तरम्
According to one's means, one should also give gold, being devoted and endowed with virtues, multiplied a hundred million times.
एभिर्मंत्रपदैस्तत्र पूजयेद्गरुडध्वजम्
With these mantras, one should worship the Lord who bears the Garuda banner.
ॐ जलजोपमदेहाय जलजास्याय शंखिने
Om, obeisance to the one whose body is like a lotus, whose mouth is like a lotus, who holds a conch.
नमः कमलनाभाय नमस्ते जल शायिने
Obeisance to the lotus-naveled one, obeisance to the one who lies upon the waters.
इति स्नानमंत्रः मया निवेदितं तुभ्यं गृहाण परमेश्वर
Thus is the bathing mantra: I have offered it to you; accept it, O Supreme Lord.
इति चन्दनमंत्रः मया निवेदितं पुष्पं गृहाण पुरुषोत्तम ।। 4.76.
Thus is the sandalwood mantra: I have offered this flower to you; accept it, O Supreme Person.
इति पुष्पमन्त्रः मनोहरवपुःस्कन्धधृतचक्राय शार्ङ्गिणे
Thus is the flower mantra: To the one with a charming form, with shoulders bearing the discus, to the wielder of the Sharnga bow.
इति पूजामंत्रः रामो रामश्च कृष्णश्च नामभिर्वामनाय ते
Thus is the worship mantra: Rama, Rama, and Krishna—by these names, to you, O Vamana.
इति सर्वांगपूजा अच्युतानंत गोविन्द वासुदेव नमोऽस्तु ते
Thus is the mantra for worship of all limbs: O Acyuta, Ananta, Govinda, Vasudeva, obeisance to you.
