For whomever the merchant performs the Gaya śrāddha on each day—
He says, 'O greatly fortunate one, by your grace, O sinless one—'
Having thus honored the departed, the merchant, out of greed for wealth—
On the occasion of Śravaṇa Dvādaśī, having worshipped Janārdana—
At the confluences of great rivers, every year, O Yudhiṣṭhira—
He attained the supreme state, which is difficult for mortals to obtain; there are cool, pure-watered, delightful lakes.
Reaching that land, the great-souled merchant, adorned with ornaments of well-refined gold—
Thus, in the glorious Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa, in the Uttara Parvan, in the dialogue of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Yudhiṣṭhira, is the seventy-fifth chapter named 'The Description of the Śravaṇa Dvādaśī Vow.'
The description of the victorious Śravaṇa Dvādaśī vow—remover of all sins, bestower of all happiness.
When that Ekādaśī is accompanied by Śravaṇa—
The unconquered demon, powerful Bali by name, was very mighty; then the gods went to the great Viṣṇu and spoke these words.
'Slay the demon Bali, O mighty-armed one, O destroyer of strength!'
He, knowing the proper time, spoke words desiring the welfare of the gods.
He, whose soul was purified by austerity, peaceful, self-controlled, master of the senses—by much austerity, in due time, his end will come.
When I come to know, through some passage of time, one endowed with humility,
Aditi approached me, desiring a son, driven by longing for offspring,
That will be for the benefit of all the gods, and for the harm of those who hate the gods.
Having spoken thus, the gods departed; Vishnu considered the task, and Aditi chose, 'What I desire will come to be for me.'
Then, after much time had passed, she became pregnant.
A child was born with short legs, a small body, and a large head.
Seeing that Vamana was born, she was ready to speak.
On the eleventh day of the month Bhadrapada, under the star Shravan, O best of men,
Fear arose among the demons, and satisfaction came to the gods.
Kashyapa, the wise Prajapati, performed the rites without delay.
Holding pure water and decorated with a water-pot, he stood upon sacred grass.
Seeing Bali, Vamana approached and spoke to him at that very moment.
You stand here for the purpose of recitation, measured by three steps.
Then Vamana, of infinite stride, began to grow.
With those two steps, he reached the worlds of Indra and others, and the abode of Brahma on the forehead.
Seeing that great wonder, the Siddhas and divine sages likewise,
