ब्रह्मस्वहारिणस्त्वेते पापाः प्रेतत्वमागताः
These sinners who have stolen Brahmin property have become pretas.
मित्रद्रोहरताः केचिद्देशेऽस्मिंस्तु सुदारुणे
Some here, in this most terrible place, are betrayers of friends and thieves.
अक्षय्यो भगवान्कृष्णः परमात्मा सनातनः
The blessed Krishna, the imperishable, the supreme soul, the eternal one,
मया विहीनाः किं त्वेते वनेऽस्मिन्भृशदारुणे
But these, deprived by me, remain in this exceedingly dreadful forest.
एतेषां त्वं महाभाग ममानुग्रहकाम्यया
O highly fortunate one, for the sake of granting me favor, you are for these.
अस्तु कक्षागता चैव तव संपुटिका शुभा 4.75.
Let your auspicious little box, which is kept at your side, be so.
गयाशीर्षे ततो गत्वा श्राद्धं कुरु महामते
Then, go to the head of Gaya and perform the śrāddha, O wise one.
एवं सम्भाषमाणोऽसौ तप्तजांबूनदप्रभः
Thus, as he was speaking, he shone with the radiance of molten gold.
स्वर्गते प्रेतनाथे तु प्रभावात्स वणिक्पुमान्
By the power of the lord of the departed having gone to heaven, that merchant became illustrious.
तत्र प्राप्य निधिं गत्वा विनिक्षिप्य स्वके गृहे प्रेतानां क्रमशस्तत्र चक्रे श्राद्धं दिनेदिने
There, having obtained the treasure, he went and deposited it in his own house, and performed śrāddha for the departed, one by one, day after day.
यस्ययस्य गयाश्राद्धं स करोति दिने वणिक्
For whomever the merchant performs the Gaya śrāddha on each day—
ब्रवीति च महाभाग प्रसादेन तवानघ
He says, 'O greatly fortunate one, by your grace, O sinless one—'
स कृत्वा धनलोभाच्च प्रेतानां सत्कृतिं वणिक्
Having thus honored the departed, the merchant, out of greed for wealth—
श्रवणद्वादशीयोगे पूजयित्वा जनार्दनम्
On the occasion of Śravaṇa Dvādaśī, having worshipped Janārdana—
महानदीसंगमेषु प्रतिवर्षं युधिष्ठिर
At the confluences of great rivers, every year, O Yudhiṣṭhira—
अवाप परमं स्थानं दुर्लभं चात्र मानवैः शीतलामलपानीयाः पुष्करिण्यो मनोहराः ।। 4.75.
He attained the supreme state, which is difficult for mortals to obtain; there are cool, pure-watered, delightful lakes.
तं देशमासाद्य वणिङ् महात्मा सुतप्तजांबूनदभूषितांगः
Reaching that land, the great-souled merchant, adorned with ornaments of well-refined gold—
इति श्रीभविष्ये महा पुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे श्रवणद्वादशीव्रतवर्णनं नाम पञ्चसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa, in the Uttara Parvan, in the dialogue of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Yudhiṣṭhira, is the seventy-fifth chapter named 'The Description of the Śravaṇa Dvādaśī Vow.'
विजयश्रवणद्वादशीव्रतवर्णनम् सर्वपापप्रशमनः सर्वसौख्यप्रदायकः
The description of the victorious Śravaṇa Dvādaśī vow—remover of all sins, bestower of all happiness.
एकादशी यदा सा स्याच्छ्रवणेन समन्विता
When that Ekādaśī is accompanied by Śravaṇa—
बलवानजितो दैत्यो बलिर्नामा महाबलः ततो देवा महाविष्णुं गत्वा वचनमूचिरे
The unconquered demon, powerful Bali by name, was very mighty; then the gods went to the great Viṣṇu and spoke these words.
जहि दैत्यं महाबाहो बलिं बलनिषूदन
'Slay the demon Bali, O mighty-armed one, O destroyer of strength!'
उवाच वाक्यं कालज्ञो देवानां हितकाम्यया
He, knowing the proper time, spoke words desiring the welfare of the gods.
तपसा भावितात्मानं शान्तं दान्तं जितेन्द्रियम् तपसोन्तः सुबहुना काले नास्य भविष्यति
He, whose soul was purified by austerity, peaceful, self-controlled, master of the senses—by much austerity, in due time, his end will come.
यदा विनयसम्पन्नं ज्ञास्ये कालेन केनचित्
When I come to know, through some passage of time, one endowed with humility,
अदितिर्मां प्रपन्ना वै पुत्रार्थे पुत्रलोभिनी
Aditi approached me, desiring a son, driven by longing for offspring,
तद्देवानां हितं सर्वे चाहितं तु सुरद्विषाम् 4.76.
That will be for the benefit of all the gods, and for the harm of those who hate the gods.
एवमुक्ता गता देवाः कार्यं विष्णुरचिंतयत् अदितिर्वरयामास वांछितं मे भविष्यति
Having spoken thus, the gods departed; Vishnu considered the task, and Aditi chose, 'What I desire will come to be for me.'
अथ काले बहुतिथे गते सा गर्भिणी ह्यभूत्
Then, after much time had passed, she became pregnant.
ह्रस्वपादं ह्रस्वकायं महच्छिरसमर्भकम्
A child was born with short legs, a small body, and a large head.
