व्याख्यानकुशलाः केचिच्छ्रावयेयुरतंद्रिताः
Some, skilled in exposition, should recite without fatigue.
यजमानो नयेद्धीमान्यावत्सूर्योदयो भवेत्
The wise sacrificer should remain until sunrise.
मंत्रैस्तु वैष्णवैर्दिव्यैः क्षपयेयुर्महीपते 4.74.
They should pass the night, O King, with divine Vaishnava mantras.
क्षीरेणाज्येन वा राजन्सर्वसिद्धि प्रदायिनीम्
With milk or with ghee, O King, he should offer to the bestower of all success.
स्नानं कुर्यान्नृपश्रेष्ठ नद्यां सरसि वा पुनः
He should bathe again, O best of kings, in a river or in a lake.
ततः शुक्लानि वस्त्राणि परिधाय यतव्रतः
Then, having put on white garments, steadfast in his vow,
पुष्पैर्धूपैः सनैवेद्यैः पूजयेत्पु रुषोत्तमम्
He should worship the Supreme Person with flowers, incense, and offerings of food.
पूजयेद्ब्राह्मणान्सर्वान्होतारो यज्ञकल्पिताः
He should worship all the Brahmins who are appointed as priests for the sacrifice.
आचार्यः पूजनीयोऽत्र सर्वस्वेनापि भारत
Here, O Bharata, the teacher should be worshipped with all one's possessions.
वित्तशाठ्यविहीनस्तु भक्तिशक्तिसमन्वितः
He should be free from miserliness, endowed with devotion and strength.
तेषामन्नं हिरण्यं च दद्याच्छुद्धेन चेतसा
He should give them food and gold with a pure mind.
यथाविभवसारेण पश्चाद्भुंजीत वाग्यतः
According to his means and resources, he should eat afterwards, observing silence.
एवं यज्ञो महाराजश्चोक्तस्ते संप्रकीर्तितः 4.74.
Thus, O great king, the sacrifice has been described to you as proclaimed.
वाजपेयातिरात्राभ्यां ये यजंति शतं समाः
Those who perform sacrifices with Vājapeya and Atirātra for a hundred years—
सप्त जन्मानि सौभाग्यमायुरारोग्यसंपदः
For seven lifetimes, one attains good fortune, long life, health, and prosperity.
मृतो विष्णुपुरं याति विष्णुना सह मोदते
Upon death, he goes to the city of Vishnu and delights there together with Vishnu.
रुद्रलोके तथा राजन्युगानि द्वादशैव तु
Likewise, in the realm of Rudra, he remains for twelve royal ages.
पुण्यक्षयादिहाभ्येत्य राजा भवति धार्मिकः
When his merit is exhausted, he returns here and becomes a righteous king.
व्रतमेतत्पुरा चीर्णं सगरेण महात्मना
This vow was formerly observed by the great-souled Sagara.
अन्यैश्च पृथिवीपालैः पालिताशेषभूतलैः
And by other rulers of the earth who protected the entire world.
भृग्वाद्यैर्मुनिभिः सर्वैर्ब्राह्मणैर्वेदपारगैः
By all sages beginning with Bhrigu, and by Brahmins accomplished in the Vedas.
अद्यप्रभृति चैवेयं ख्यातिं यास्यति भूतले
From today onward, this will become renowned upon the earth.
एषा पुलस्त्यमुनिना कथिता कुरुनंदन 4.74.
This has been told by the sage Pulastya, O descendant of Kuru.
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुलोके महीयते विष्णुभक्तेन कर्तव्या संसारभयभीरुणा
Freed from all sins, one is honored in the world of Vishnu; it should be performed by a devotee of Vishnu who fears the dangers of worldly existence.
भीमेन या किल पुरा समुपोषिता च रात्रौ घटस्थिरसुशतिलवारिधारा
That very vow which was formerly observed by Bhima at night, with a pot filled with sesame, rice, and water.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे भीमद्वादशीव्रतवर्णनं नाम चतुःसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttara Parva, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Yudhishthira, this is the seventy-fourth chapter, named 'The Description of Bhima's Dvadashi Vow.'
श्रवणद्वादशीव्रतवर्णनम् एका या द्वादशी पुण्या तां वदस्व ममानघ
The Description of the Shravana Dvadashi Vow. O sinless one, tell me about that one meritorious Dvadashi.
सर्वकामप्रदा पुण्या चोपवासे महाफला
It is meritorious, grants all desires, and yields great results when observed with fasting.
संगमे सरितां स्नात्वा द्वादश्यां समुपोषितः
Having bathed at the confluence of rivers, one should fast on Dvadashi.
बुधश्रवणद्वादश्यामेवं वै संयतो भवेत्
On the Dvadashi that falls on a Wednesday with Shravana, one should thus remain self-controlled.
