ब्राह्मणाय प्रदातव्या कृष्णो मे प्रीयतामिति
—should be given to a brāhmaṇa, saying, 'May Kṛṣṇa be pleased with me.'
अन्येषामपि दातव्यं यत्कृत्वा वसु वांछितम्
One should also give to others, having performed this, whatever wealth is desired.
शांतचेता निराबाधः परं पदमवाप्नुयात्
With a peaceful mind, free from obstacles, one attains the supreme state.
ऽ अष्टषष्ठैकनयनः शंकुकर्णो महास्वनः
He has sixty-eight eyes, conch-shaped ears, and a mighty voice.
चिंतनीयो महादेवो यस्य रूपं न विद्यते
One should contemplate the great Lord, whose form is not known.
तदेव ते समाख्यातं दुष्करं भीष्मपंचकम्
This, indeed, has been described to you as the difficult Bhishma Panchaka.
यस्तस्मिंस्तोषयेद्भक्त्या तस्मै मुक्तिप्रदोऽच्युतः
Whoever pleases Him there with devotion, to that person the imperishable One grants liberation.
प्राप्नोति वैष्णवं स्थानं सत्कृत्वा भीष्मपञ्चकम्
By properly observing the Bhishma Panchaka, one attains the Vaishnava abode.
मुच्यते पातकात्सम्यक्कृत्वैकं भीष्मपञ्चकम्
One is freed from sin by rightly performing even a single Bhishma Panchaka.
अथास्मिंस्तोषितो विष्णुर्नृणां मुक्तिप्रदो भवेत् 4.72.
Then, when thus pleased, Vishnu becomes the giver of liberation to people.
मुच्यते पातकेभ्यो वा पाठको विष्णुलोकभाक्
The reciter also is freed from sins and attains the world of Vishnu.
यद्भीष्मपञ्चकमिति प्रथितं पृथिव्यामेकादशीप्रभृतिपञ्चदशीनिरुद्धम्
That which is called the Bhishma Panchaka is renowned on earth, beginning from Ekadashi and ending on the fifteenth day.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे भीष्म पंचकव्रतवर्णनं नाम द्विसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttara Parva, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Yudhishthira, the seventy-second chapter named 'Description of the Bhishma Panchaka Vow' is concluded.
मल्लद्वादशीव्रतवर्णनम् ब्रूहि मे मल्लद्वादश्या विधानं देवकीसुत

गोपालमध्ये गोवत्सैरष्टवर्षोस्मि लीलया
Among the cowherds, with the calves, I was eight years old, engaged in play.
कंसासुरवधार्थाय मथुरोपवने तदा
Then, for the purpose of slaying the demon Kamsa, in the outskirts of Mathura—
समेत्य मल्लगोपस्य बलेन सह कानने
Having assembled with Mallagopa and Bala in the forest—
सुरभद्रो मंडलीकयोगवर्द्धनयोगदाः
Surabhadra, by the circle, bestower of the yoga of increase—
गोपीनामपि नामानि प्राधान्येन निबोध मे
Also hear from me the principal names of the gopis.
इल्वानुगन्धा सुभगा तारका दशमी तथा
Ilva, Anugandha, Subhaga, Taraka, and also Dashami.
पूजितोऽस्मि सुरैः पुष्पैर्दधिदुग्धाक्षतैस्तथा
I was worshipped by the gods with flowers, curd, milk, and rice grains.
मल्लिन्यश्च सुरामांसैरंगजागरनर्त्तनैः
And by the Mallinis with liquor, meat, bodily vigils, and dances.
भक्ष्यैर्भोज्यैस्तथा पानैर्दधिदुग्धघृतासवैः 4.73.
With foods to be eaten, foods to be enjoyed, and drinks—curds, milk, ghee, and sweet beverages,
गोष्ठीप्रभूतैर्वधूनां स्नेहसंभाषणैर्मिथः
With gatherings in abundance, the young women converse affectionately with one another,
संबंधिभिः क्रमेणैव मल्लानां च पृथक्पृथक्
With relatives in due order, and with the wrestlers, each separately,
मासादिकार्तिकांतं च भक्त्या द्वादशनामभिः
From the month of Āśvina until Kārtika, with devotion, by the twelve names,
केशवनारायणमाधवगोविन्दविष्णुमधुसूदनत्रिविक्रमवामनश्रीधरहृषीकेशपद्मनाभदामोदराणां नमोनम इति
Keśava, Nārāyaṇa, Mādhava, Govinda, Viṣṇu, Madhusūdana, Trivikrama, Vāmana, Śrīdhara, Hṛṣīkeśa, Padmanābha, Dāmodara—salutations, salutations to them.
गन्धैः पुष्पैस्तथा धूपैर्दीपैर्जागरणैर्निशि ।। गीतवाद्यैश्च नृत्यैश्च मल्लक्ष्वेडांगयुद्धकैः
With fragrances, flowers, incense, lamps, and night vigils, with songs, instruments, and dances, with the shouts and contests of wrestlers,
घृतदानैः क्षीरदानैः कृष्णो मे प्रीयता मिति
With offerings of ghee and milk, may Kṛṣṇa be pleased with me.
द्वादशी या ममाद्यापि मनसः प्रीतिवर्द्धनी
This Dvādaśī, which even today increases the joy of my heart,
