दारुणं नरकं योग्यमनया जीवहिंसया
thought, 'Such violence against life leads to a terrible hell.'
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य ज्येष्ठबंधोश्च मोहनः
Hearing these words of his elder brother, Mohana—
पुरा सत्ययुगे भ्रातर्ब्राह्मणा यज्ञतत्पराः 3.2.22.१
In the former Satya Yuga, O brother, brāhmaṇas were devoted to sacrifice.
तिलाधिकमजं मत्वा हव्ये ते तु मनो दधुः
Considering sesame superior to a goat, they set their minds on offering it in the fire.
ऊचुस्ते मधुरं वाक्यं त्वन्मतं निष्फलप्रदम्
They spoke sweet words: 'Your opinion yields no fruit.'
एतस्मिन्नंतरे तत्र पितृयोनिरमावसुः
At that moment, a pitṛ named Amāvasu appeared there.
विमानं परमारुह्य मुनीन्प्रोवाच निर्भयः
Ascending a splendid aerial chariot, he addressed the sages without fear.
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य तथा कृत्वा शिवं ययुः
Hearing his words, they acted accordingly and attained auspiciousness.
इति श्रुत्वा वचो घोरं लीलाधर उदारधीः
Having heard those dreadful words, Liladhara, of noble intellect,
रजोगुणमयो लोकस्त्रेतायां संबभूव ह
The world, composed of the quality of passion, arose in the Treta age.
हव्येन तर्पिता देवा न मांसे रक्तसंभवैः
The gods were satisfied by offerings, not by flesh born of blood.
फलाऽद्यैः कारयामास तदा पूर्णाहुतीर्नृप नगरं दाहयामास नरनारीसमन्वितम्
He caused complete oblations with fruits and other things, O king, and burned the city along with its men and women.
महामायाप्रभावेण शंभुदत्तः शिवप्रियः 3.2.22.
By the power of great illusion, Shambhudatta, beloved of Shiva,
तदा लीलाधरो विप्रो दशपुत्रोपजीवकः
Then Liladhara, the Brahmin, who lived with ten sons,
क्षत्रसिंहस्तु नृपतिर्मोहनान्तिकमाययौ
Kshatrasingha, the king, approached Mohana.
तदंबायै नमस्तुभ्यं महावीरायै नमोनमः
Salutations to you, O Ambā; salutations again and again to the great heroine.
जप्त्वा सप्तशतीं विष्णुर्वैष्णवीं शक्तिमाप्तवान्
Having recited the Seven Hundred, Vishnu obtained the Vaishnavi power.
प्रणवास्तनया यस्यास्तुरीयपुरुषप्रिया
Whose offspring is Pranava, who is dear to the fourth person.
यस्या देहे स्थितं विश्वं तदंबायै नमोनमः
In whose body the universe resides—salutations again and again to that Ambā.
शची सिद्धिस्तथा मृत्युः प्रभा गीर्वाणसैनिकाः लोकपालप्रिया त्वं हि लोकमातर्नमोनमः
You are Shachi, success, death, radiance, the army of the gods, beloved of the guardians of the worlds; you are indeed the mother of the world—salutations again and again.
तृष्णा तृप्ती रतिर्न्नीतिर्हिंसा क्षांतिर्मतिर्गतिः
Thirst, satisfaction, pleasure, conduct, violence, patience, thought, and movement,
इत्यष्टकप्रभावेण क्षत्रसिंहो महीपतिः
Thus, by the power of the eight, Kshatrasingha, the king,
तस्मात्त्वं विक्रमादित्य भज दुर्गां सनातनीम् 3.2.22.
Therefore, O Vikramaditya, worship Durga, the eternal one.
प्रश्नोत्तरेण भूपाल मया त्वं संपरीक्षितः
By questions and answers, O king, you have been examined by me.
दस्युनष्टाः पुरीः सर्वाः क्षेत्राणि विविधानि च
All the cities and various fields have been destroyed by robbers.
यो नृपः सर्वतीर्थानि पुनरुद्धारयिष्यति
The king who will restore all the sacred places,
विक्रमाख्यानकालोऽयं पुनर्धर्मं करोति हि
This is the era known as Vikrama, which once again upholds righteousness.
तदन्ते भुवि कृष्णांशो भविष्यति महा बली
At the end of that time, a powerful portion of Krishna will be born on earth.
सूताद्या मुनयः सर्वे नैमिषारण्यवासिनः भविष्यंति महाराज पुराणश्रवणे रताः
All the sages such as Sūta, dwelling in Naimisharanya, O great king, will become devoted to listening to the Purāṇas.
इत्युक्त्वा स तु वैतालस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
Having spoken thus, Vaitāla disappeared right there.
