षष्ठकालेन्नभोज्येन स्थायी स्वर्गे नरो भवेत्
By eating only at the sixth period, a man remains in heaven.
शिलायां भोजनान्नित्यं स्नानं प्रयागजं भवेत्
By always eating upon a stone, the bath becomes that of Prayaga.
एवमादिव्रते पार्थ तुष्टिमायाति हेतुतः
In such vows, O Partha, satisfaction arises for a reason.
निवर्तते क्रियाः सर्वाश्चातुर्वण्यस्य भारत
All actions cease for the fourfold classes, O Bharata.
यज्ञाश्च गृहवेशादि गोदानाच्च प्रतिष्ठितम्
Sacrifices, entering the house, and the giving of cows are established.
असंक्रांतं तु मासं वै दैवे पित्र्ये च वर्जयेत्
One should avoid the month that is not transited, both for divine and ancestral rites.
प्राप्ते भाद्रपदे मासि एकादश्यां दिने हरेः 4.70.
When the month of Bhadrapada arrives, on the eleventh day dedicated to Hari.
य एतदेव शयनं तत्रेदं कारणं शृणु
Whoever has this bed, listen to the reason for it.
ममापि मानयत्यङ्गं प्रार्थितो योगनिद्रया
Even my own body is honored, requested by yogic sleep.
शंखचक्रासिमार्गाद्यैर्बाहवोप्यथ वक्षसा
By the marks of conch, discus, sword, and others, both arms and chest.
मुकटेन शिरो रुद्धं कुंडलाभ्यां च कर्णकौ
The head is covered by the crown, and the ears by earrings.
चतुरो वार्षिकान्मासान्माऽऽश्रिता सा भविष्यति
She will remain for four months, having taken refuge there.
चकार लोचनावासमतोऽर्थं मे युधिष्ठिर
He made the abode of the eyes for my purpose, O Yudhishthira.
योगनिद्रा महानिद्रा शेषाभिशयने स्थितः
Yogic sleep, the great sleep, is established on the bed of Shesha.
लक्ष्मीकरांबुजैरच्छैर्मृद्यमानपदद्वयः
With the lotus hands of Lakshmi, both feet are gently massaged.
व्रतैरनेकैनियमैः पांडवश्रेष्ठ मानवः
By many vows and disciplines, O best of the Pandavas, a man is honored.
ततोऽवबुध्यते देवः श्रीमाञ्छङ्खगदाधरः 4.70.
Then the glorious Lord, bearing the conch and mace, awakens.
मन्त्रेणानेन राजेन्द्र देवमुत्थापयेद्द्विजः
With this mantra, O king, a twice-born should awaken the deity.
समुत्थिते तदा विष्णो क्रियाः सर्वाः प्रवर्तयेत्
When Vishnu has arisen, all rites should be commenced.
उत्थिते देवदेवेशे नगरे पार्थिवः स्वयम्
When the Lord of gods has arisen, the king himself in the city—
यंयं दामोदरः पश्येदुत्थितो धरणीधरः
Whomever Damodara, arisen, beholds—he who upholds the earth—
रात्रौ प्रजागरे देवमेकादश्यां सुरालये
During the night, keeping vigil, the deity in the abode of gods on the eleventh day—
होमयेद्धव्यवाहं च हव्यद्रव्यैर्घृतादिभिः
One should offer oblations with sacrificial materials such as ghee and the like.
घृतदधिक्षौद्रकाद्यैर्गुडधूपैः समोदकैः
With ghee, curds, honey, and others, incense of jaggery, and water mixed with fragrance—
एकादश दशाष्टौ वा पंच द्वौ वा कुरूत्तम
Eleven, ten, eight, five, or two, O best of Kurus—
श्रद्धोक्तविधिना पार्थ भोजयेद्भाग्यवान्यतीन्
According to the prescribed method of faith, O Partha, one should feed fortunate ascetics.
स्ववाचा स्वमनोभीष्टपत्रपुष्पफलादिकम् 4.70.
With one's own words and heartfelt wishes, one should offer leaves, flowers, fruits, and the like.
कथयित्वा द्विजेभ्यस्तं दद्याद्भक्त्या सदक्षिणाम्
Having spoken thus to the twice-born, one should give with devotion and proper gifts.
यत्त्यक्तं चतुरो मासान्प्रवृत्तिन्तस्य चाचरेत्
Whatever has been renounced for four months, one should continue that practice.
अवसाने तु राजेन्द्र वासुदेवपुरीं व्रजेत्
At the conclusion, O king, one should go to the city of Vasudeva.
