तुलाराशिगते तस्मिन्पुनरुत्थापयेद्व्रतम्
When the sun enters Libra, then the vow should be revived.
अधिमासे च पतिते एष एव विधिक्रमः
If an intercalary month occurs, this same procedure is to be followed.
आषाढस्य सिते पक्षे एकादश्यामुपोषितः
Having fasted on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Āṣāḍha—
पीतांबरधरं सौम्यं पर्यंके स्वास्तृते शुभे
One should envision the gentle Lord, clad in yellow garments, lying upon a beautiful couch.
इतिहासपुराणज्ञो विष्णुभक्तोपि यः पुमान्
Whoever, knowledgeable in history and Purāṇas and devoted to Viṣṇu, is a man—
समालभ्य शुभैर्गंधैर्धूपैर्व स्त्रैरलंकृतम्
Having worshipped with auspicious fragrances, incense, and well-adorned women—
सुप्ते त्वयि जगन्नाथ जगत्सुप्तं भवेदिदम् 4.70.
When you sleep, O Lord of the universe, this world too becomes asleep.
एवं तां प्रतिमां विष्णोः स्थापयित्वा युधिष्ठिर
Thus, having established that image of Viṣṇu, O Yudhiṣṭhira—
चतुरो वार्षिकान्मासान्देवस्योत्थापनावधि
He should observe the four months of the year until the time of the Lord's awakening.
गृह्णीयान्नियमानेतान्दंतधावनपूर्वकम्
He should undertake the prescribed disciplines, beginning with the brushing of the teeth.
मधुरस्वरो भवेद्राजा पुरुषो गुडवर्जनात्
A man who abstains from jaggery will have a sweet voice and become a king.
कटुतैलपरित्यागाच्छत्रुक्षयमवाप्नुयात्
By giving up pungent oils, one attains the destruction of enemies.
पुष्पादिभोगत्यागेन स्वर्गे विद्याधरो भवेत्
By renouncing pleasures such as flowers, one becomes a Vidyādhara in heaven.
कटुकाम्लतिक्तमधुरक्षारकाषायमेव च
Pungent, sour, bitter, sweet, salty, and astringent—
तांबूलवर्जनाद्भोगी रक्तकण्ठश्च जायते
By abstaining from betel, one becomes a sensual enjoyer and develops a red throat.
फलत्यागाच्च मतिमान्बहुपुत्रश्च जायते
By renouncing fruits, one becomes intelligent and is blessed with many sons.
पादाभ्यंगपरित्यागाच्छिरोभ्यंगाच्च पार्थिव 4.70.
By giving up foot massage and performing head massage, O king—
दधिदुग्ध तक्रनियमाद्गोलोकं लभते नरः
By regularly consuming curd, milk, and buttermilk, a man attains Goloka.
लभेत संततिं दीर्घां तापपक्वस्य भक्षणात्
By eating food cooked by heat, one obtains a long lineage.
सदा मुनिः सदा योगी मधुमांसस्य वर्जनात्
By always abstaining from honey and meat, one is always a sage, always a yogi.
एवमादिपरित्यागाद्धर्मः स्याद्धर्मनन्दन
By renouncing such things as these, O son of Dharma, one attains righteousness.
धारणं नखरोमाणां गंगास्नानं दिनेदिने
Keeping one's nails and hair, and bathing daily in the Ganges—
भूमौ भुंक्ते सदा यस्तु स पृथिव्याः पतिर्भवेत्
Whoever always eats on the ground becomes the lord of the earth.
पादाभिवंदनाद्विष्णोर्लभेद्गोदानजं फलम्
By bowing at the feet of Viṣṇu, one obtains the fruit of gifting a cow.
विष्णुदेवकुले कुर्यादुपलेपनमर्चनम्
One should perform smearing and worship in the temple of Viṣṇu.
प्रदक्षिणाशतं यस्तु करोति स्तुतिपाठकः
Whoever recites hymns and performs a hundred circumambulations—
गीतवाद्यकरो विष्णोर्गांधर्वं लोकमाप्नुयात् 4.70.
He who sings and plays music for Viṣṇu attains the world of the Gandharvas.
स व्यासरूपी भगवानंते विष्णुपुरं व्रजेत्
He, taking the form of Vyāsa, will go at the end to Viṣṇu's city.
नित्यस्नायी नरो यस्तु नरकं स न पश्यति
A man who bathes daily does not see hell.
कृत्वा प्रेक्षणकं दिव्यं राज्यं सोऽप्सरसां लभेत्
Having performed the divine viewing, he attains the realm of the apsaras.
