Gayatri, Prakriti, creation, Savitri, regarded as the spouse of the Creator; the queen, Bhānumatī by name, ever-radiant, beloved of Bhaskara.
Thus, having worshipped Padmanabha, Shankara, Pitamaha, Arka, and others, along with their beloveds,
A man, imbued with devotion, observes this vow on the twelfth day in the world.
In succession, Hari, Hara, Hiranyagarbha, and Prabhakara are honored in the worlds.
If a man observes this vow together with a woman, or even alone, in any way,
Thus ends the sixty-eighth chapter named 'The vow of non-separation for Hari, Hara, Hiranyagarbha, and Prabhakara,' in the Uttaraparva of the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the dialogue between Shri Krishna and Yudhishthira.
Description of the vow of Govatsa Dvadashi. Because of that sin, there is intense disgust in my mind.
There, Brahmanas, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras, and others were slain.
The sin arising from their killing cuts into my vital parts.
O Partha, mighty-armed, pillar of the Pandavas,
Yudhishthira said: What is this so-called Govatsa Dvadashi, and what is its procedure?
Tell me all this, O Hari, save me from the ocean of hell.
Shri Krishna said: The vow-holder performed great austerity on the mountain.
Filled with great joy, desiring a vision of the divine,
In the beautiful Tamduli hermitage, in the Siddhapata region of the Pariyatra mountains,
In the unparalleled ascetic forest, adorned with divine groves,
Within the circle of Bhrigu's hermitage, clothed in bark and skins,
Peaceful lions and deer, all kinds of creatures, and trees were present.
It was divided by lions, tigers, elephants, deer, tribal people, and hares.
While those sages were engaged in austerities there, desiring a vision,
an aged Brahmin appeared, his hair white with old age; and Uma too assumed the form of a cow—listen, O Partha, to how it was.
Those who were born from the ocean of milk, at the time of the ancient churning for nectar,
Nandā, Subhadrā, Surabhī, Suśīlā, and Bahulā—these,
Jamadagni, Bhāradvāja, Vasiṣṭha, Aṣita, and Gautama,
Cow dung, yellow pigment, urine, milk, curd, and ghee—all these are of the cow.
From cow dung arose the auspicious bilva tree, dear to Shiva; and from cow dung again, the seeds of lotuses and water-lilies were produced.
The yellow pigment from the cow is auspicious, pure, and surpasses all; it is the food of all the gods, especially of Shiva.
Whatever seed exists in the world should be known as originating from milk; from ghee, nectar arose, which is the cause of satisfaction for the gods.
Brahmins and cows are one family, divided into two.
