स्त्रियं जघान तरुणीं स्नातुकामामथागताम्
He killed a young woman who had come desiring to bathe.
तत्रापि बडिशं दत्त्वा जनैः प्राणैर्वियोजितः
There too, having been baited with a hook, he was deprived of life by the people.
क्रूरश्छिद्रपरः क्षुद्रो नरप्राणवियोजकः
Cruel, intent on breaking in, lowly, a taker of human life.
मंत्रेणाहूय सिद्धेन वातिकेन व्यसुः कृतः
Summoned by a mantra by a perfected wind-spirit, he was deprived of life.
क्रूरदंष्द्रः करालास्यो मांसशोणितभोजनः
With cruel fangs, a terrible mouth, he ate flesh and blood.
स राष्ट्रं जर्जरं शून्यं सर्वं चक्रे विषादिषु
He made the whole country ruined and empty with poisons.
समारोप्य धनुः संख्ये ब्रह्मास्त्रेण निपातितः
Having strung his bow in battle, he was struck down by the Brahma-weapon.
वनेचराणां क्रुद्धाङ्गो ब्राह्मणान्निधनं गतः 4.65.
Among the forest-dwellers, with an enraged body, he met his end at the hands of the Brahmins.
एकादशेऽपि पाञ्चालो भवमध्येऽपि भीषणः
Even in the eleventh, the Panchala was dreadful in the midst of existence.
पापो धर्मध्वजो रक्षो देवतोज्झितमाल्यधृक
The sinful Dharma-bannered demon, wearing a garland abandoned by the gods.
द्वादशे स पुनर्जातः पुष्कलक्लेशभाजनः
In the twelfth, he was born again, a recipient of abundant suffering.
तेन चासीत्कृतं पूर्वं तारकद्वादशीव्रतम्
By him, the vow of Taraka-dvadasi had previously been performed.
अवाप शीघ्रं पंचत्वं संसारभवसागरे
He quickly met his end in the ocean of worldly existence.
भूयश्चोपोषिता तेन तारकद्वादशी शुभा
Again, by him, the auspicious Tāraka Dvādaśī was observed.
व्रतप्रभावाद्भुवने भुक्त्वा राज्यमकण्टकम्
By the power of that vow, he enjoyed an untroubled reign in the world.
स्त्रीभिर्वा भर्तृवाक्येन स्नानदानजपादिकम्
Whether by women or by the husband's command, one should perform bathing, giving, recitation, and the like.
अकृत्रिमे जले स्नानमपराह्णे समाचरेत्
One should bathe in natural water in the afternoon.
प्रणम्य भास्करायाथ कृत्वा देवार्चनं तथा 4.65.
Then, bowing to Bhāskara and performing worship of the gods likewise.
ततो भुक्त्वा फलैः पुष्पैर्गन्धधूप विलेपनैः
Afterwards, having eaten, with fruits, flowers, fragrant incense, and ointments.
रम्ये ताम्रमये पात्रे जानुभ्यां धरणीं गतः
In a beautiful copper vessel, kneeling on the ground.
भूमौ तु मंडलं कृत्वा गोमयेन सतारकम्
On the earth, one should make a circle with cow dung, marked with a star.
सहस्रशीर्षामंत्रेण भूमौ शक्त्या शनैः स्वयम्
With the Sahasraśīrṣā mantra, gently, with one's own hand, upon the earth with a tool.
पर्युक्ष्य धूममुत्क्षिप्य दद्याद्विप्राय दक्षिणाम्
Sprinkling, raising the smoke, one should give the fee to a brāhmaṇa.
मार्गशीर्षे खंडखाद्यं पौषे सोहालकं तथा
In Mārgaśīrṣa, khanda-khādya; in Pauṣa, sohālaka likewise.
मोदकांश्चैत्रमासे तु वैशाखे खंडवेष्टकम्
In Caitra, modakas; in Vaiśākha, khanda-veṣṭaka.
श्रावणे मधुशीर्षेण नभस्ये पायसेन च
In Śrāvaṇa, with madhu-śīrṣa; in Nabhasya, with pāyasa.
एभिर्द्वादशभिर्वर्षैर्भोजयित्वा द्विजान्स्वयम्
With these twelve offerings, having fed the twice-born himself each year.
समाप्ते तु व्रते कृत्वा राजतं तारकागणम् 4.65.
When the vow is completed, one should make a constellation of stars in silver.
कुम्भा द्वादश दातव्याः सोदका मोदकाश्रिताः
Twelve pots should be given, filled with water and containing modakas.
ब्राह्मणे वल्गुलल्लाटं लक्षपुष्पोपशोभितम्
To a brāhmaṇa with a shining forehead, adorned with a hundred thousand flowers.
