आहत्य मानरोषेण जज्वलुः समरेऽधिकम्
Struck with fierce anger, they blazed even more intensely in the battle.
आच्छिद्याच्छिद्य चिह्नानि ध्वजान्नानाविधांस्तथा
Cutting and tearing down the various marks and banners,
चिह्नकानि ददौ तुष्टा देवेभ्यः शीघ्रचारिणी
The swift-moving goddess, pleased, gave new emblems to the gods.
अंबिका तु भृशं तुष्टा तेषां चक्रे क्षणात्क्षयम् जीवितानि च जग्राह दैत्यानां देवनंदिनी ।।4.61.
Ambikā, greatly delighted, instantly destroyed them and took the lives of the Daityas, she who brings joy to the gods.
अथ रक्तासुरं कंठे गृहीत्वापात्य भूतले
Then, seizing Raktāsura by the throat, she threw him down to the ground.
स भिन्नहृदयः पश्चाद्भूमौ तत्र प्रपोथितः
His heart split, he was then dashed upon the earth.
देवास्तानसुराञ्जित्वा गत्वा शत्रुपुरं जितम् यात्रां चक्रुः संप्रहृष्टा नवम्यां ध्वजचिह्निताम्
The gods, having defeated those Asuras, entered the conquered enemy city and joyfully began a procession on the ninth day, marked by banners.
अतोद्यापीह भूपालैर्जयलब्धीच्छयादृतैः
Here, the kings, eager for victory, played musical instruments.
सरहस्यं समंत्रं च येन तुष्यति चंडिका
With all secrets and mantras by which Caṇḍikā is pleased.
तस्यां स्नात्वा शुभैः पुष्पैरर्चनीया हरेः स्वसा
Having bathed there, one should worship the sister of Hari with auspicious flowers.
कुमारी सुभगा देवी सिंहस्यंन्दनगामिनी मालतीकुसुमैर्द्दीपैर्गन्धधूपविलेपनैः
The maiden, the auspicious goddess, riding a lion chariot, is to be worshipped with mālatī flowers, lamps, fragrant incense, and ointments.
बलिभिः पशुभिर्मेध्यैः सुरामांसासृगम्बरैः मंत्रेणानेन कौंतेय ब्रह्मणोप्यथवा ननु
With offerings of pure animals, meat, wine, and garments stained with blood, and with this mantra, O son of Kuntī, or even by a brāhmaṇa.
भद्रां भगवतीं कृष्णां विश्वस्य जगतो हिताम्
The auspicious, dark-complexioned goddess, who is the benefactress of the world.
प्रपन्नोहं शिवां रात्री भद्रे पारय मे व्रतम् देवेभ्यो मानुषेभ्यश्च भयेभ्यो रक्ष मां सदा ।। 4.61.
I take refuge in the auspicious Night, O Bhadrā, carry me through my vow; always protect me from dangers from gods and men.
ततश्चारोपयेद्राजा देवीनां भवने तथा
Then the king should install her in the temple of the goddess.
उपवासेन कुर्वीत एकभक्तेन वा पुनः
He should observe a fast, or else take only one meal.
एवं ये पूजयिष्यंति ध्वजैर्भगवतीं नराः
In this way, those men who worship the Goddess with banners—
रणे राजकुले गेहे युद्धमध्ये जले स्थिते
—whether in battle, in the royal court, at home, in the midst of conflict, or while situated in water—
अस्यां बभूव विजयो नवम्यां पांडुनंदन
On this Navami, O son of Pandu, victory was attained here.
धन्या पुण्या पापहरा सर्वोपद्रवनाशनी
She is blessed, holy, remover of sin, and destroyer of all calamities.
देव्यर्चनाहितमतिर्मनुजो नवम्यां हेमस्रजं ध्वजवरं स हि रोपयेद्यः
If, on Navami, a man intent on worship of the Goddess should install an excellent banner adorned with a golden garland—
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे ध्वजनवमीव्रतवर्णनं नामैकषष्टितमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhavishya Mahapurana, in the Uttaraparvan, in the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Yudhishthira, the sixty-first chapter named 'Description of the Dhvaja Navami Vow' is concluded.
उल्कानवमीव्रतवर्णनम् । उल्काख्यं नवमीं राजन्कथयामि निबोध ताम्
Description of the Ulka Navami Vow: O King, I will tell you about the Navami called Ulka—listen to it.
अश्वयुक्छुक्लपक्षे या नवमी लोकविश्रुता
That Navami which falls in the bright half of Ashvayuja and is renowned among people—
पश्चात्संपूजयेद्देवीं चामुण्डां भैरवप्रियाम्
Afterwards, one should worship the Goddess Chamunda, beloved of Bhairava.
पूजयित्वा स्तवं कुर्यान्मन्त्रेणानेन मानवः
Having worshipped, a person should recite this hymn with the mantra.
महिषघ्नि महामाये चामुण्डे मुण्डमालिनि
O Slayer of Mahisha, Great Maya, Chamunda, wearer of a garland of skulls—
कुमारीर्भोजयेत्पश्चान्नवनीलसुकंचुकैः
Afterwards, one should feed young girls, dressed in new blue garments.
सप्त पञ्चाप्यथैकां वा चित्तवित्तानुरूपतः
Seven, five, or even one—according to one's means and inclination.
अभ्युक्ष्य मण्डलं कृत्वा गोमयेन शुचिस्मितः
Having sprinkled water and made a mandala with cow dung, smiling with purity—
