मंत्रेणानेन राजेन्द्र कृत्वा ब्राह्मणभोजनम् अनग्निपाकं भूपात्रे दधिपुष्पफलैः शुभम्
With this mantra, O king, having fed the Brahmins, offering food not cooked by fire, and with curd, flowers, and fruits in an earthen vessel, auspiciousness is attained.
एवं यः कुरुते पार्थ श्रीवृक्षस्यार्चनं नरः
In this way, O Partha, whoever worships the auspicious tree—
सप्तजन्मांतरं यावत्सुखसौभाग्यसंयुता
Endowed with happiness and good fortune for seven lifetimes.
श्रीवृक्षमक्षतफलं वसितं नवम्यां नैवेद्यपुष्पफलवस्त्रविचित्रधान्यैः 4.60.
The auspicious tree, with unblemished fruit, is offered on the ninth day, adorned with diverse grains, flowers, fruits, and garments as offerings.
ध्वजनवमीव्रतवर्णनम् पूर्ववैरमनुस्मृत्य संग्रामा बहवः कृताः
Description of the Dhvaja Navami vow: Remembering former enmity, many battles were fought.
नानारूपधरा देवी अवतीर्य पुनःपुनः
The goddess, taking on various forms, descended again and again.
अथ रक्तासुरो नाम महिषस्य सुतो महान् तस्मै ददौ चतुर्वक्त्रो राज्यं त्रैलोक्यमण्डले
Then, a great demon named Raktasura, son of Mahisha, was granted by the four-faced one the sovereignty of the three worlds.
तेन लब्धं वरेणाथ मेलयित्वा दनोः सुतान्
Having obtained this boon, he gathered together the sons of Danu.
तद्दृष्ट्वा दानवबलं सन्नद्धात्युद्धतध्वजम्
Seeing that army of the Danavas, arrayed and with banners raised in arrogance,
तत्र प्रावर्तत नदी शोणितौघतरंगिणी वहंती पितृलोकाय सुरासुरभयानका
There arose a river there, with waves of blood, flowing toward the realm of the ancestors, terrifying to gods and demons alike.
अथ रक्तासुरो रोषाद्युयुधे विबुधैः सह
Then Raktasura, out of anger, fought with the gods.
भ्रष्टाः स्वर्गं परित्यज्य त्यक्तप्रहरणा द्रुतम्
Defeated, abandoning heaven and their weapons, they quickly fled.
दुर्गा चामुण्डया सार्धं नवदुर्गासमन्विता
Durga, together with Camunda and accompanied by the nine Durgas,
शिवदूती महारुण्डा भ्रामरी रुद्रमंगला एतासां ते स्तुतिं चक्रुस्त्रिदशाः प्रणताननाः ।। 4.61.
Shivaduti, Maharuṇḍa, Bhramari, Rudramangala—these goddesses were praised by the gods, their faces bowed in reverence.
अमरपतिमुकुटचुम्बितचरणांबुजसकलभुवनसुखजननी
She whose lotus feet are touched by the crowns of the lords of immortals, the mother who brings happiness to all the worlds.
विकृतनखदशनभूषणरुधिरवशाच्छुरितक्षतखड्गहस्ता
Adorned with blood-smeared nails and teeth, holding a wounded sword in her hand.
प्रच्छादितशिखिगणोद्बलविकटजटाबद्धचन्द्रमणिशोभा
Her matted locks, fierce and strong, are covered by a host of peacock feathers, adorned with a shining moon-jewel.
करकमलजनितशोभा पद्मासनबद्धपद्मवदना च
Her lotus hands radiate beauty, her face is like a lotus, seated upon a lotus throne.
दिग्वसना विकृतमुखा फेत्कारोद्दाम पूरितदिशौघा
Clad in the directions alone, with a terrifying face, her wild cries fill all the quarters.
क्रोशितब्रह्मांडोदरसुरवरमुखरहुंकृतनिनादा
Her roar resounds, filling the universe, echoing within the cosmic egg and among the best of gods.
मुक्ताट्टहासभैरवदुःसहतरचकितसकलदिक्चक्रा
With a liberated, thunderous laugh of Bhairava, she caused all the quarters of the sky to tremble in terror, unable to endure her might.
पटुपटहमुरजमर्दलझल्लरिझङ्कारनर्तितावयवा
Her limbs danced to the resounding clamor of drums, kettledrums, mṛdaṅgas, and the jingling of cymbals.
शांता प्रशांतवदना सिंहवरा ध्यानयोगत न्निष्ठा
Peaceful, with a tranquil face, the lion-like heroines were steadfast in the practice of meditative yoga.
पक्षपुटचंचुघातैः संचूर्णितविविधशत्रुसंघाता 4.61.
With the strokes of their wings and beaks, they crushed the multitude of various enemies.
पर्यटति जगति हष्टा पितृवननिलयेषु योगिनीसहिता
She joyfully wandered the world, accompanied by yoginīs, in the abodes of the ancestors.
इति नवदुर्गासंस्तवमनुपममार्याभिरपरराट् कृत्वा
Thus, the other king composed this matchless hymn of praise to the Nine Durgās with noble words.
पुनःपुनः प्रणम्योचुर्भवानीं सिंहवाहिनीम्
Again and again, bowing down, they addressed Bhavānī, the lion-rider.
देवानां तद्वचः श्रुत्वा दत्त्वा तेभ्योऽभयं ततः
Hearing those words of the gods, she then granted them freedom from fear.
युयुधे दानवैस्सार्धं महासमरदुर्दिनम्
She fought together with the demons in that dreadful, great battle.
तेऽपि तत्रासुराः प्राप्ताः प्रचंडा रुद्ररूपिणः
There too arrived the fierce demons, taking on the forms of Rudra.
