मृत्युकाले द्विजसुतो विहस्योच्चै रुरोद ह
At the time of death, the Brahmin's son laughed loudly and then wept.
इति श्रुत्वा नृपः प्राह शृणु वैतालिक द्विज
Hearing this, the king said, 'Listen, O Vetala, O Brahmin.'
ज्ञात्वा स मध्यमः पुत्रो राजानं शरणं ययौ
Knowing this, the middle son sought refuge with the king.
खङ्गहस्तं नृपं ज्ञात्वा जहास शिवतत्परः
Seeing the king with sword in hand, devoted to Shiva, he laughed.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराणे प्रतिसर्गपर्वणि चतुर्युगखंडापरपर्याये कलियुगीयेतिहाससमुच्चय एकोनविंशोऽध्यायः

विशालनगरे रम्ये विपुलेशो महीपतिः
In the beautiful city of Vishala, there was a great king named Vipulesha.
तस्य ग्रामेवसद्वैश्योर्थदत्तोविपणे रतः
In his village, there lived a merchant who was always engaged in trade for the sake of profit.
सुवर्णनाम्ने वैश्याय पिता वै दत्तवान्स्वयम् द्रव्यलाभाय न्यवसच्चिरं कालं स लुब्धवान्
To a merchant named Suvarna, his father himself gave wealth, and, desiring to gain more riches, he dwelled there for a long time, being greedy.
अनंगमंजरीगेहे दैवयोगाद्द्विजोत्तमः
By the arrangement of fate, a distinguished Brahmin came to the house of Anangamanjari.
होमांते सुन्दरी नारी मार्जनार्थे सुता गता
At the conclusion of a sacrifice, a beautiful woman, the daughter, went to clean up.
सुतापि मदघूर्णाक्षी विप्राय समयं ददौ
The daughter, her eyes rolling from intoxication, made an appointment with the Brahmin.
इति श्रुत्वा द्विजो वाक्यं तस्या ध्यानं तदाकरोत्
Hearing her words, the Brahmin then meditated upon her.
अर्द्धरात्रे तु सा नारी द्विजागमनतत्परा
At midnight, that woman, intent on the Brahmin's arrival, waited.
नागतः स द्विजो दैवात्तदा सा मरणं गता
But the Brahmin did not come due to fate, and at that time she died.
दृष्ट्वा मृत्युवशां सुभ्रूं स्वयं मरणमागतः 3.2.20.
Seeing the beautiful-browed woman under the power of death, he himself approached death.
सुवर्णश्च तदागत्य विललाप प्रियां प्रति
Then Suvarna came and lamented for his beloved.
इत्युक्त्वा स तु वैतालो नृपतिं प्राह विक्रमम्
Having spoken thus, the Vetala addressed King Vikrama.
द्विजस्नेहेन सा नारी मृता स्वर्गपुरं ययौ
That woman, out of affection for the Brahmin, died and went to the city of the gods.
वैश्यवर्णैः सदा पूज्यो ब्राह्मणो ब्रह्ममूर्तिमान्
The Brahmin, possessing the form of Brahma, is always to be honored by the merchant class.
द्विजोऽपि नाप्तवान्नारीं तदा स्वर्गगतिं हरिम्
But the Brahmin did not obtain the woman; at that time, Hari granted her the path to heaven.
सुवर्णो हृदि संज्ञाय मत्प्रिया ब्रह्मवत्सला
Suvarna, realizing in his heart that his beloved was dear to Brahma,
इति श्रीभीविष्ये महापुराणे प्रतिसर्गपर्वणि चतुर्युगखण्डापरपर्याये कलियु गीयेतिहासमुच्चये विंशोऽध्याय

सूत उवाच जयस्थलपुरे रम्ये वर्धमानो नृपोभवत्
Sūta said: In the beautiful city of Jayasthala, there was a king named Vardhamāna.
तस्य ग्रामेवसद्विप्रो वेदवेदांगपारगः
In his village lived a brāhmaṇa who was well-versed in the Vedas and their branches.
चत्वारश्चात्मजास्तस्य चतुर्भागपरायणाः
He had four sons, each devoted to a different quarter of learning.
कदाचिद्दैवयोगेन निर्द्धनत्वं च ते गताः
Once, by the force of fate, they all fell into poverty.
ऊचू रमा कथं नष्टा तद्वदस्व पितः प्रिय
They said, 'O dear father, tell us how our wealth was lost.'
द्यूतो धनव्ययकरः पापमूलो महाखलः द्यूतकर्मप्रभावेण त्वदीयद्रव्यसंक्षयः
Gambling, the root of sin and great wickedness, causes loss of wealth; through the influence of gambling, your possessions have been destroyed.
धनोपायेन भोः पित्रोर्वाक्यं कुरु मतिं प्रति
O sons, seek a means of livelihood; follow your parents' advice with discernment.
हे पुत्र कुलट त्वं वै वेश्यासंगं महाशुभम्
O son, you are a libertine, associating with courtesans, which is most inauspicious.
