तथोर्द्ध्वरेतसस्तस्य स्थितस्यानिमिषस्य हि
Then, as he stood there, steadfast and with his senses restrained,
एकाहाद्द्रुतमभ्येत्य कार्तवीर्योर्जुनो नृपः
In a single day, the king Kārtavīrya Arjuna swiftly approached him.
गात्रसंवाहनं पूजां मनसा चिंतितं तथा
He mentally offered service, worship, and the massage of limbs.
तस्यै ददौ वरान्पुष्टांश्चतुरो भूरितेजसः
To him, he granted four abundant boons, radiant with great energy.
अधर्माद्धीयमानस्य सद्भिस्तस्मान्निवारणम्
Among them was the power to restrain the unrighteous, even when supported by the virtuous.
संग्रामान्सुबहूञ्जित्वा हत्वा वीरान्सहस्रशः
Having conquered many battles, he slew thousands of heroes.
चक्रवर्तिपदं चैव अष्टसिद्धिसमन्वितम् ।। 4.58.
He attained the status of a universal sovereign, endowed with the eight perfections.
तेनापि पृथिवी कृत्स्ना सप्तद्वीपा सपर्वता
By him, the entire earth with its seven continents and mountains was ruled.
तस्य बाहुसहस्रं तु प्रभावात्किल धीमतः
It is said that, by his power, that wise one possessed a thousand arms.
दशयज्ञसहस्राणि तेषु द्वीपेषु सप्तसु
In those seven continents, he performed ten thousand sacrifices.
सर्वे यज्ञा महाबाहो प्रसन्ना भूरिदक्षिणाः
All those sacrifices, O mighty-armed one, were pleasing and rich in gifts.
गंधर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च नित्यमेवोपशोभिताः
They were always adorned by Gandharvas and Apsarases.
तस्य यज्ञे जगुर्गाथां गंधर्वा नारदस्तथा
At his sacrifice, the Gandharvas and also Nārada sang hymns.
न नूनं कार्तवीर्यस्य गतिं यास्यन्ति पार्थिवाः
Surely, no other kings will attain the path of Kārtavīrya.
द्वीपेषु सप्तसु स वै खड्गचर्मशरासनी
In the seven continents, he bore sword, shield, and bow.
अनष्टद्रव्यता चास्य न शोको न च वै क्लमः
He never lost his wealth, nor did he experience sorrow or fatigue.
पञ्चाशीतिसहस्राणि वर्षाणां वै नराधिप 4.58.
He, the lord of men, lived for eighty-five thousand years.
स एव पशुपालोभूत्क्षेत्रपालः स एव च
He himself became a protector of cattle, and also a guardian of the fields.
स वै बाहुसहस्रेण ज्याघातकठिनत्वचा
With a thousand arms, his skin hardened by the pull of the bowstring,
न हि नागमनुष्यैस्तु माहिप्मत्यां महाद्युतिः
Indeed, neither serpents nor humans could match his great brilliance upon the earth.
स वै पत्नीं समुद्रस्य प्रावृट्कालेंबुजेक्षणाम्
He took as his wife the ocean's daughter, whose eyes resembled lotuses in the rainy season.
ललितं क्रीडता तेन फलनिष्पन्दमालिनी
With her, he played delightfully, adorned with garlands of trembling fruits.
तस्य बाहुसहस्रेण क्षोभ्यमाणे महोदधौ
When the great ocean was agitated by his thousand arms,
तूष्णीकृतो महाभाग लीनाहीनमहामतिः
The greatly fortunate, wise one subdued the mighty serpents, rendering them silent.
क्रांता निश्चलमूर्द्धानो बभूवुश्च महोरगाः जिता धनुर्धराः सर्वे सुत्यक्तैः पञ्चभिः शरैः
The great serpents, their heads unmoving, were subdued; all the bowmen were defeated with just five arrows, which were then set aside.
लङ्काधिपं मोहयित्वा सबलं रावणं बलात्
Overpowering Ravana, the lord of Lanka, along with his army, he bewildered him by force.
ततोभ्येत्य पुलस्त्यस्तु अर्जुनं संप्रसादयन् तस्य बाहुसहस्रस्य बभूव ज्यातलस्वनः ।। 4.58.
Then Pulastya approached and appeased Arjuna; from his thousand arms arose the sound of the bowstring.
क्षुधितेन कदाचित्स प्रार्थितश्चित्रभानुना
Once, when he was hungry, he was requested by Citrabhanu.
कुंडेशयस्ततोऽद्यापि दृश्यते भगवान्हरिः बभूव दुहितुर्हेतोः शरदोऽद्यापि तिष्ठति
Even today, the blessed Hari is seen at Kunda, and for the sake of his daughter, he remains there through the autumns.
स एवं गुणसंयुक्तो राजाभूदर्जुनो भुवि
Thus endowed with virtues, Arjuna became king upon the earth.
