अष्टपुत्रा जीववत्सा सर्वब्राह्मगुणैर्वृता
He had eight sons, all living, endowed with all the virtues of brāhmaṇas.
एवं तस्य सभार्यस्य योगाभ्यासरतस्य वा
Thus, he, together with his wife, engaged in the practice of yoga.
ब्रह्मलब्धप्रसादेन द्रुतं गत्वामरावतीम्
By the grace obtained from Brahma, he swiftly went to Amaravati.
दैत्यदानवसंयोगे पातालादेत्य भारत
O Bharata, at the union of Daityas and Danavas, they came up from the netherworld.
तेन निर्णाशिता देवाः सेंद्रचंद्रमरुद्गणाः
By him, the gods were destroyed, along with Indra, the Moon, and the hosts of Maruts.
अग्रतः प्रलयं यांतः सेन्द्रा देवा भयार्दिताः
The gods, with Indra, terrified, went forward toward destruction.
युध्यंतः शरसंघातैर्गदामुसलमुद्गरैः 4.58.
They fought with showers of arrows, maces, clubs, and mallets.
शरभैर्गंडकैर्व्याघ्रैर्वानरै रभसैर्द्रुताः
Driven swiftly by fierce Sharabhas, Gandakas, tigers, and monkeys,
यावद्विन्ध्यगिरिं प्राप्तास्तत्तस्याश्रममण्डलम्
They reached Mount Vindhya, that circle of hermitages.
तयोः समीपं संप्राप्तास्ते नराः शरणार्थिनः
Those men, seeking refuge, came near to them.
अभ्यंतरे प्रविश्याथ तिष्ठध्वं विगतज्वराः
Then, entering within, remain without anxiety.
दैत्या अपि द्रुतं प्राप्ता घ्नंतः प्रहरणैररीन्
The Daityas also arrived swiftly, striking their enemies with weapons.
द्रुतं द्रुमानाक्षिपध्वं पुष्पोपगफलोपगान्
Quickly, uproot the trees bearing flowers and fruits.
तत्क्षणाच्चापि दैत्यानां श्रीर्बभूव शिरोगता निस्तेजसो बभूवुर्हिः निःश्रीका मदपंडिताः
At that very moment, the fortune of the Daityas went to their heads; they became powerless, deprived of splendor, intoxicated and deluded.
देवैरपि गृहीतास्ते दैत्याश्च हरणे रणे
Even in battle, those Daityas were seized by the gods and taken away.
ऋष्टिभिः करणैः शूलैस्त्रिशूलैः परिघैर्घनैः
With spears, implements, lances, tridents, and heavy clubs,
असुरा देवशस्त्रौघैर्जिता इन्द्रेण घातिताः सुरैरपि मुनेस्तस्य देवर्षेर्महिमाऽभवत् ।। 4.58.
The Asuras were conquered by the multitude of divine weapons, slain by Indra; even by the gods, the glory of that sage, the divine seer, was manifest.
ततः स सर्वलोकानां भवाय सततोत्थितः
Then he, ever intent on the welfare of all worlds, arose.
काष्ठकुडयशिलाभूत ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्महातपाः
He became like wood, a hut, or a stone, with arms raised upward, a great ascetic.
नेत्रे ह्यनिमिषे कृत्वा भ्रुवोर्मध्ये विलोकयन्
He made his eyes unblinking, gazing at the space between his eyebrows.
तथोर्द्ध्वरेतसस्तस्य स्थितस्यानिमिषस्य हि
Then, as he stood there, steadfast and with his senses restrained,
एकाहाद्द्रुतमभ्येत्य कार्तवीर्योर्जुनो नृपः
In a single day, the king Kārtavīrya Arjuna swiftly approached him.
गात्रसंवाहनं पूजां मनसा चिंतितं तथा
He mentally offered service, worship, and the massage of limbs.
तस्यै ददौ वरान्पुष्टांश्चतुरो भूरितेजसः
To him, he granted four abundant boons, radiant with great energy.
अधर्माद्धीयमानस्य सद्भिस्तस्मान्निवारणम्
Among them was the power to restrain the unrighteous, even when supported by the virtuous.
संग्रामान्सुबहूञ्जित्वा हत्वा वीरान्सहस्रशः
Having conquered many battles, he slew thousands of heroes.
चक्रवर्तिपदं चैव अष्टसिद्धिसमन्वितम् ।। 4.58.
He attained the status of a universal sovereign, endowed with the eight perfections.
तेनापि पृथिवी कृत्स्ना सप्तद्वीपा सपर्वता
By him, the entire earth with its seven continents and mountains was ruled.
तस्य बाहुसहस्रं तु प्रभावात्किल धीमतः
It is said that, by his power, that wise one possessed a thousand arms.
दशयज्ञसहस्राणि तेषु द्वीपेषु सप्तसु
In those seven continents, he performed ten thousand sacrifices.
