श्रावणे शर्वनामानमिष्ट्वार्कं निशि भक्षयेत्
In Śrāvaṇa, having worshipped Śarva by name, one should eat the sun at night.
मासि भाद्रपदेऽष्टम्यां त्र्यंबकं नाम पूजयेत्
In the month of Bhādrapada, on Aṣṭamī, one should worship Tryambaka by name.
भवनामाश्विने पूज्यः प्राशयेत्तंडुलोदकम्
In Āśvina, having worshipped Bhava by name, one should consume rice-water.
कार्तिके रुद्रनामानं संपूज्य प्राशयेद्दधि
In Kārtika, having worshipped Rudra by name, one should consume curd.
अब्दांते भोजयेद्विप्राञ्छिवभक्तिपरायणान् शक्त्या हिरण्यवासांसि भक्त्या तेभ्यो निवेदयेत्
At the end of the year, one should feed brāhmaṇas who are devoted to Śiva, and, according to one's ability and with devotion, offer them garments and gold.
सतिला कृष्णकलशा भक्ष्यभोज्येन संयुताः निवेदयति रुद्राणां गां च कृष्णां पयस्विनीम् ।। 5.57.
Sesame seeds, black clay pots, and food, both to be eaten and enjoyed, should be offered, as well as a black, milk-giving cow to the Rudras.
वर्षमेकं चरेदेवं नैरन्तर्य्येण यो नरः
Whoever, for one year, observes this practice without interruption—
सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः सर्वैश्वर्यसमन्वितः
—becomes freed from all sins and endowed with every prosperity.
अनेन विधिना देवाः सर्वे देवत्वमागताः
By this rite, all the gods attained divinity.
ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मत्वमापन्नो ह्यहं विष्णुत्वमागतः
Brahmā attained the state of Brahmā, and I myself attained the state of Viṣṇu.
नारी वा पुरुषो वापि कृत्वा कृष्णाष्टमीव्रतम्
Whether woman or man, whoever observes the Kṛṣṇāṣṭamī vow—
सूर्यकोटिप्रतीकाशैर्विमानैः सर्वकामिकैः
—will ascend celestial chariots shining like ten million suns, fulfilling all desires.
नृत्यवादित्रसंयुक्तैरुत्कृष्टध्वनिनादितैः
Accompanied by dance and musical instruments, resounding with excellent melodies—
त्रिनेत्रः शूलपाणिश्च शिवैश्वर्यसमन्वितः
—with three eyes, holding a trident, and endowed with the majesty of Śiva—
इत्येतत्ते समाख्यातं पार्थ कृष्णाष्टमीव्रतम्
Thus, O Pārtha, the Kṛṣṇāṣṭamī vow has been explained to you.
कृष्णाष्टमीव्रतमिदं शिवभावितात्मा सत्याशनैरुदितनामयुतैरुपोष्य 5.57.
This Kṛṣṇāṣṭamī vow, performed with a mind devoted to Śiva, with truthful fasting and pure intent, brings about auspiciousness.
इति श्रीभविष्ये महापुराण उत्तरपर्वणि श्रीकृष्णयुधिष्ठिरसंवादे कृष्णाष्टमीव्रतवर्णनं नाम सप्तपञ्चाशत्तमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Bhaviṣya Mahāpurāṇa, in the Uttaraparvan, in the dialogue between Śrī Kṛṣṇa and Yudhiṣṭhira, ends the fifty-seventh chapter named 'Description of the Kṛṣṇāṣṭamī Vow.'
अनघाष्टमीव्रतवर्णनम् तस्य पत्नी महाभाग अनसूया पतिव्रता
Description of the Anaghāṣṭamī vow: His wife was most fortunate, Anasūyā, devoted to her husband.
तयोः कालेन महता जातः पुत्रो महा तपाः
In due course, after a long time, a son was born to them, endowed with great austerity.
द्वितीयो नाम लोकेस्मिन्ननघश्चेति विश्रुतः
He became known in this world as Anagha, the second by name.
अष्टपुत्रा जीववत्सा सर्वब्राह्मगुणैर्वृता
He had eight sons, all living, endowed with all the virtues of brāhmaṇas.
एवं तस्य सभार्यस्य योगाभ्यासरतस्य वा
Thus, he, together with his wife, engaged in the practice of yoga.
ब्रह्मलब्धप्रसादेन द्रुतं गत्वामरावतीम्
By the grace obtained from Brahma, he swiftly went to Amaravati.
दैत्यदानवसंयोगे पातालादेत्य भारत
O Bharata, at the union of Daityas and Danavas, they came up from the netherworld.
तेन निर्णाशिता देवाः सेंद्रचंद्रमरुद्गणाः
By him, the gods were destroyed, along with Indra, the Moon, and the hosts of Maruts.
अग्रतः प्रलयं यांतः सेन्द्रा देवा भयार्दिताः
The gods, with Indra, terrified, went forward toward destruction.
युध्यंतः शरसंघातैर्गदामुसलमुद्गरैः 4.58.
They fought with showers of arrows, maces, clubs, and mallets.
शरभैर्गंडकैर्व्याघ्रैर्वानरै रभसैर्द्रुताः
Driven swiftly by fierce Sharabhas, Gandakas, tigers, and monkeys,
यावद्विन्ध्यगिरिं प्राप्तास्तत्तस्याश्रममण्डलम्
They reached Mount Vindhya, that circle of hermitages.
तयोः समीपं संप्राप्तास्ते नराः शरणार्थिनः
Those men, seeking refuge, came near to them.
