तस्याश्चोपरि विन्यस्तं मथितामृतमुत्तमम्
Upon it was placed the finest nectar that had been churned.
तत्राप्यमृतकुंभस्य पेतुर्न्निष्यंदबिंदवः
There, from the vessel of nectar, drops trickled down.
वंद्या पवित्रा देवैस्तु वंदिताभ्यर्चिता पुरा
Honored and pure, it was worshipped by the gods in ancient times.
द्राक्षाक्षोटकपित्थैश्च बर्बरैर्लकुचैस्तथा 4.56.
With grapes, myrobalans, wood apples, jujubes, and also lakuca fruits,
दध्यक्षतैः सुपुष्पैश्च धूपनैवेद्यदीपकैः
With curds, unbroken grains, fine flowers, incense, offerings, and lamps,
त्वं दूर्वेऽमृतजन्मासि वंदिता च सुरासुरैः
You, O dūrvā, are born of nectar, and are revered by gods and asuras.
यथा शाखाप्रशाखाभिर्विस्तृतासि महीतले
Just as you spread across the earth with branches and offshoots,
एवमेषा पुरा पार्थ पूजिता त्रिदशोत्तमैः
So too, O Pārtha, was this one worshipped in ancient times by the foremost of the gods.
पूजिताभ्यर्हिता वाचा गौर्या राजञ्छ्रिया तथा
Worshipped and honored with words by Gaurī, by Śrī, O king,
सुकेश्या च घृताच्या च रंभया च सुकेशया
By Sukeśī, Ghṛtācī, Rambhā, and Sukeśayā as well,
स्त्रीभिरेवार्चिता दूर्वा सौभाग्यसुखदायिनी
By women alone was dūrvā worshipped, bestower of good fortune and happiness.
दत्त्वा दानानि विप्रेभ्यः फलं दत्त्वार्चयेत्प्रभोः
Having given gifts to the Brāhmaṇas, one should offer the fruit in worship of the Lord.
भक्षयित्वा सुहृन्मित्रसंबंधिस्वजने तथा
After eating, together with friends, companions, relatives, and family,
दूर्वाष्टमीति विख्यातं पुण्यं संतानकारकम् 4.56.
The festival of Dūrvāṣṭamī is renowned, meritorious, and brings about progeny.
मर्त्ये लोके चिरं स्थित्वा ततः स्वर्गं गताः पुनः
Having dwelt long in the mortal world, they then attained heaven again.
मेघावृतेंबरतले हरिते वनांते या साष्टमी शुभफला सफला नभस्ये
On the eighth day, under a sky covered with clouds, at the edge of the green forest, that day in the month of Nabhas is auspicious and fruitful.
कृष्णाष्टमीव्रतवर्णनम् धर्मसंजननं लोके रुद्रप्रीतिकरं परम्
In the world, it generates righteousness and brings supreme delight to Rudra.
मासि मार्गशिरे प्राप्ते दंतधावनपूर्वकम्
When the month of Mārgashīrsha arrives, after brushing the teeth,
अशक्तशक्तभेदेन गृहान्निष्क्रम्य बाह्यतः
According to one's ability, leaving the house, one should go outside.
ब्रह्मचारी जितक्रोधः शिवार्चनजपे रतः
A celibate, who has conquered anger and is devoted to worship and recitation for Shiva,
शिवलिङ्गं समभ्यर्च्य सुमनोभिः सुगंधिभिः
Having worshipped the Shiva-liṅga with fragrant and pleasing flowers,
ततो देवस्य पुरतो होमं कुर्यात्तिलै र्गुरु
Then, before the deity, one should perform a fire offering with sesame, O teacher.
गोमूत्रप्राशनं कृत्वा स्वप्याद्भूमौ ततो निशि
Having drunk cow urine, one should sleep upon the ground at night.
एवं पुष्येपि संपूज्य शंभुं नाम महेश्वरम्
In the month of Puṣya, likewise, one should worship Śaṃbhu, named Maheśvara.
माघे माहेश्वरं नाम कृष्णाष्टम्यां प्रपूजयेत्
In Māgha, one should worship Maheśvara by name on the Kṛṣṇāṣṭamī day.
फाल्गुने च महादेवं संपूज्य प्राशयेत्तिलान् 5.57.
In Phālguna, having worshipped Mahādeva, one should consume sesame.
चैत्रे च स्थाणुनामानं कृष्णाष्टम्यां शिवं यजेत्
In Caitra, on Kṛṣṇāṣṭamī, one should worship Shiva named Sthāṇu.
वैशाखे शिवनामानमिष्ट्वा रात्रौ कुशोदकम्
In Vaiśākha, having worshipped Shiva by name, one should drink water with kuśa grass at night.
ज्येष्ठे पशुपतिं पूज्य गवां शृङ्गोदकं पिबेत्
In Jyeṣṭha, having worshipped Paśupati, one should drink water from the horns of cows.
आषाढे चोग्रनामानमिष्ट्वा संप्राश्य गोमयम्
In Āṣāḍha, having worshipped Ugra by name, one should consume cow dung.
