बलदेवं तथा पूज्य सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
By worshipping Baladeva in this way, one is freed from all sins.
ततो वर्द्धापनं षष्ठीनामादिकरणं मम
After that, the ceremony of increasing the prosperity of the sixty is to be performed for me.
यथा मम तथा कार्यो भगवत्या महोत्सवः
Just as it is done for me, so too should a great festival be held for the goddess.
हिरण्यं काञ्चनं गावो वासांसि कुसुमानि च
Gold, ornaments, cows, garments, and flowers should be offered.
यमेवं देवकी देवी वसुदेवादजीजनत् 4.55.
This very one, whom Devakī the goddess gave birth to from Vasudeva,
सुजन्मवासुदेवाय गोब्राह्मणहिताय च
is the well-born Vāsudeva, benefactor of cows and brāhmaṇas.
एवं यः कुरुते देव्या देवक्याः सुमहोत्सवम्
Whoever thus performs the great festival of the goddess Devakī,
नरो वा यदि वा नारी यथोक्तफलमाप्नुयात्
whether man or woman, attains the fruit as declared.
पुत्रसंतानमारोग्यं धनधान्यादिसद्गृहम्
He gains sons, health, wealth, grain, and a virtuous household.
तस्मिन्राष्ट्रे प्रभुर्भुंक्ते दीर्घायुर्मनसेप्सितान्
In that kingdom, the lord enjoys a long life and all desired things.
पर्जन्यः कामवर्षी स्यादीतिभ्यो न भयं भवेत्
The rain falls as desired; there is no fear from calamities.
न तत्र मृत निष्क्रांतिर्न गर्भपतनं तथा
There is no untimely death, no miscarriage there.
न वैद्यजनसंयोगो न चापि कलहो गृहे विष्णुलोकमवाप्नोति सोऽपि पार्थ न संशयः
There is no need for physicians, nor is there quarrel in the home; he attains Viṣṇu's world, O Pārtha, without doubt.
जन्माष्टमी जनमनोनयनाभिरामा पापापहा सपदि नंदितनंदगोपा
The Janmāṣṭamī, delightful to the mind and eyes, destroyer of sins, is immediately celebrated by Nanda and the cowherds.
दूर्वाष्टमीव्रतवर्णनम् दूर्वाष्टमीव्रतं पुण्यं यः कुर्याच्छ्रद्धयान्वितः
The vow of Dūrvāṣṭamī is now described.
न तस्य क्षयमाप्नोति संतानं सप्तषौरुषम्
Whoever performs the holy Dūrvāṣṭamī vow with faith attains unbroken lineage for seven generations.
कस्माच्च सा पवित्रा च लोकनाथ ब्रवीहि मे
And why is it pure? O lord of the world, tell me.
क्षीरोदसागरे पूर्वं मथ्यमानेऽमृतार्थिना
Formerly, when the ocean of milk was being churned for nectar,
भ्रमितो वै स वेगेन रोमण्युद्धर्षितानि वै
He was shaken with force, and his body hair stood on end.
अजायत शुभा दूर्वा रम्या हरितशाद्वला
From that, the auspicious dūrvā grass arose, beautiful and lushly green.
तस्याश्चोपरि विन्यस्तं मथितामृतमुत्तमम्
Upon it was placed the finest nectar that had been churned.
तत्राप्यमृतकुंभस्य पेतुर्न्निष्यंदबिंदवः
There, from the vessel of nectar, drops trickled down.
वंद्या पवित्रा देवैस्तु वंदिताभ्यर्चिता पुरा
Honored and pure, it was worshipped by the gods in ancient times.
द्राक्षाक्षोटकपित्थैश्च बर्बरैर्लकुचैस्तथा 4.56.
With grapes, myrobalans, wood apples, jujubes, and also lakuca fruits,
दध्यक्षतैः सुपुष्पैश्च धूपनैवेद्यदीपकैः
With curds, unbroken grains, fine flowers, incense, offerings, and lamps,
त्वं दूर्वेऽमृतजन्मासि वंदिता च सुरासुरैः
You, O dūrvā, are born of nectar, and are revered by gods and asuras.
यथा शाखाप्रशाखाभिर्विस्तृतासि महीतले
Just as you spread across the earth with branches and offshoots,
एवमेषा पुरा पार्थ पूजिता त्रिदशोत्तमैः
So too, O Pārtha, was this one worshipped in ancient times by the foremost of the gods.
पूजिताभ्यर्हिता वाचा गौर्या राजञ्छ्रिया तथा
Worshipped and honored with words by Gaurī, by Śrī, O king,
सुकेश्या च घृताच्या च रंभया च सुकेशया
By Sukeśī, Ghṛtācī, Rambhā, and Sukeśayā as well,
