भगवत्पार्श्वतो राजन्बहुरूपं महोत्सवम् शांतिरस्तु सुखं चास्तु लोकाः सन्तु निरामयाः
Beside the Blessed Lord, O King, there was a grand festival of many forms. May there be peace, may there be happiness, may the people be free from illness.
जन्माष्टमीव्रतं नाम पवित्रं पुरुषोत्तम
The vow called Janmāṣṭamī is sacred, O Supreme Person.
येन त्वं तुष्टिमायासि लोकानां प्रभुर व्ययः
By which you attain satisfaction, O Lord, and the world receives your blessing.
उपवासस्य नियमं गृह्णीयाद्भक्तिभावितः
One should undertake the discipline of fasting, imbued with devotion.
एकेनैवोपवासेन कृतेन कुरुनंदन 4.55.
O descendant of Kuru, by performing even a single fast,
उपावृत्तस्य पापेभ्यो यस्तु वासो गुणैः सह
one who has turned away from sins, and whose clothing is accompanied by virtues,
ततः स्नात्वा च मध्याह्ने नद्यादौ विमले जले
then, having bathed at midday in a river or in pure water,
पद्मरागैः पत्रनेत्रैर्मंडितं चर्चितं शुभैः
adorned with lotus gems and decorated with auspicious leaf-shaped eyes,
सर्वं गोकुलवत्कार्यं गोपीजनसमाकुलम्
everything should be arranged like in Gokula, filled with groups of cowherd women,
यवार्धं स्वस्तिका कुड्यैः शंखवादित्रसंकुलम्
with half-barley, auspicious swastika marks on the walls, and filled with the sounds of conches and musical instruments,
धान्ये विन्यस्य मुसलं रक्षितं रक्षपालकैः
placing the pestle in the grain, guarded by protectors,
एवमादि यथाशेषं कर्तव्यं सूतिकागृहम्
in this way, everything required should be done for the birthing chamber,
कांचनी राजती ताम्री पैत्तली मृन्मयी तथा
of gold, silver, copper, brass, and also of clay,
सर्वलक्षणसम्पन्ना पर्यंके चार्द्धसुप्तिका
endowed with all auspicious marks, on a couch with a half-reclining bed,
प्रस्तुता च प्रसूता च तत्क्षणाच्च प्रहर्षिता 4.55.
prepared and having given birth, and at that very moment, delighted,
श्रीवत्सवक्षसं पूर्णं नीलोत्पलदल च्छविम्
with a chest marked by Śrīvatsa, full, and with the hue of blue lotus petals,
तत्र देवगृहं नागा यक्षविद्याधरा नराः
there, in the divine house, are nāgas, yakṣas, vidyādharas, and men,
संचरंत इवाकाशे प्राकारैरुदितोदितैः
moving as if in the sky, with ramparts rising and falling,
कश्यपो वसुदेवोयमदिति श्चापि देवकी
Kaśyapa, Vasudeva, Aditi, and also Devakī,
नन्दः प्रजापतिर्दक्षो गर्गश्चापि चतुर्मुखः
Nanda, the progenitor Dakṣa, Garga, and the four-faced one,
तत्र कंसनियुक्ता ये दानवा विविधायुधाः
there, those demons appointed by Kaṃsa, bearing various weapons,
गोधेनुकुञ्जराश्चास्य दानवाः शस्त्रपाणयः
cowherds, buffaloes, and elephants are his, and the demons wield weapons.
लेखनीयश्च तत्रैव कालियो यमुनाह्रदे
There, the image of Kaliya in the Yamuna pool should be drawn.
तां पार्थ पूजयेद्भक्त्या गन्धपुष्पाक्षतैः फलैः
O Partha, one should worship her with devotion, using fragrant substances, flowers, unbroken rice, and fruits.
बीजपूरैः पूगफलैर्ल्लकुचैस्त्रपुसैस्तथा 4.55.
With betel nuts, areca fruits, lakucha fruits, and also with cucumbers, one should worship.
ध्यात्वावतारं प्रागुक्तं मंत्रेणानेन पूजयेत्
Meditating on the previously described descent, one should worship with this mantra.
गायद्भिः किन्नराद्यैः सततपरिवृता वेणुवीणानिनादैर्भृङ्गारादर्शकुम्भप्रमरकृतकरैः सेव्यमाना मुनीन्द्रैः
Ever surrounded by Kinnaras and others singing, with the sounds of flute and vina, served by sages holding mirrors, pitchers, and fans, like bees devoted to her.
पादावभ्यंजयंतीं श्रीर्देवक्याश्चरणांतिके
Lakshmi is anointing the feet near the feet of Devaki.
ॐ देवक्यै नमः ॐ बलभद्राय नमः ॐ सुभद्रायै नमः ॐ यशोदायै नमः पूजयेयुर्द्विजाः सर्वे स्त्रीशूद्राणाममंत्रकम्
Om, obeisance to Devaki; Om, obeisance to Balabhadra; Om, obeisance to Subhadra; Om, obeisance to Yashoda; all the twice-born should worship thus, while women and Shudras do so without mantras.
विध्यंतरमपीच्छंति केचिदत्र द्विजोत्तमाः
Some excellent Brahmins here desire a different procedure.
