रोगर्दौर्गत्यरूपेण तथैवेष्टविघातनैः
Through disease, misfortune, or obstacles to desired aims—
तद्विघाताय वक्ष्यामि सदा कल्याणसप्तमीम्
For the removal of those obstacles, I shall always declare the auspicious Saptamī.
बालानां मरणं यत्र क्षीरपानं प्रशस्यते
Where the death of children occurs, drinking milk is praised.
शान्तये तत्र वक्ष्यामि मृतवत्सादिके च यत्
For peace in that situation, I will tell you what should be done in the case of a child who dies like a calf.
वराहकल्पे संप्राप्ते मनोर्वैवस्वतेंऽतरे
When the Varaha Kalpa arrived, in the interval of Manu Vaivasvata,
आसीन्नृपोत्तमः पूर्वं कृतवीर्यः प्रतापवान्
There was formerly a great and powerful king named Kritavirya.
यावद्वर्षसहस्राणि सप्तसप्तति भारत
For seventy-seven thousand years, O Bharata,
यवनस्य तु शापेन विनाशमगमत्पुरा
By the curse of a Yavana, he was destroyed in ancient times.
उपवासव्रतैर्दिव्यैर्वेदसूक्तैश्च भारत 4.52.१
By means of divine fasts, vows, and Vedic hymns, O Bharata,
कृतवीर्येण वै पृष्टः प्रोवाचेदं बृहस्पतिः
When questioned by Kritavirya, Brihaspati spoke these words:
भविष्यति चिरंजीवी किं तु कल्मषनाशनम्
He will live long, but what destroys sin is this:
जातस्य मृतवत्सायाः सप्तमे मासि भूपते
For a child who dies like a calf, in the seventh month, O king,
बालस्य जन्मनक्षत्रं वर्जयेत्तां तिथिं बुधः
A wise man should avoid the birth star and that lunar day of the child.
गोमयेनोपलिप्तायां भूमावेकाग्रचित्तवान्
With focused mind, on earth smeared with cow dung,
निर्वपेत्सूर्यमुद्गाभ्यां मातृभ्योपि विधानतः
One should offer oblations to the Sun and to the mothers, according to rule.
जुहुयाद्रुद्रसूक्तेन तद्वद्रुद्राय भारत
He should make offerings with the Rudra hymn, likewise to Rudra, O Bharata.
यवकृष्णतिलैर्होमः कर्तव्योष्टशतं पुनः
A hundred oblations should again be performed with barley and black sesame.
विप्रेण वेदविदुषा विधिवद्दर्भपाणिना
By a learned Brahmin, skilled in the Vedas, holding darbha grass, and according to rule.
पञ्चमं च पुनर्मध्ये चाक्षतेन विभूषितम् 4.52.
On the fifth day, in the middle, adorned with unbroken rice,
सौरेण तीर्थतोयेन पूर्णचन्द्रमलान्वितम्
With water from a holy place of the Sun, filled with the light of the full moon.
पंचरत्नफलैर्युक्ताञ्छाखाभिरपि वेष्टितान्
Adorned with branches encircled by the fruits of five jewels,
सुशुद्धां मृदमानीय सर्वेष्वेव विनिक्षिपेत्
One should bring pure clay and place it in all of them.
गृहीत्वा ब्राह्मणं चात्र सौरान्मन्त्रानुदीरयेत्
Taking a Brāhmaṇa here, one should recite the Sauramantras.
भोजिताभिर्यथाशक्ति माल्यवस्त्रविभूषणैः
Having fed them to the best of one’s ability, with garlands, garments, and ornaments,
दीर्घायुरस्तु बालोऽयं जीवपुत्रा च भाविनी
May this boy have long life, and may the future daughter live as well.
शक्रः सलोकपालो वै ब्रह्मा विष्णुर्महेश्वरः
May Indra, along with the guardians of the worlds, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Maheśvara,
माशनिर्मा स हुतभुङ्मा च बालग्रहा क्वचित्
May Māśanirmā, Hutabhuk, and the planetary influences on children never be present.
ततः शुक्लाम्बरधराः कुमारं पतिसंयुताः
Then, women dressed in white garments, together with their husbands, approach the boy.
काञ्चनीं च ततः कृत्वा तिलपात्रोपरि स्थिताम् 4.52.
Then, having made a golden (object), they place it upon a vessel of sesame.
वस्त्रकाञ्चनरत्नौघैर्भक्ष्यैः सघृतपायसैः भुक्त्वा च गुरुणा चेयमुच्चार्या मंत्रसंततिः
With garments, gold, heaps of jewels, and foods along with ghee and milk-rice, after eating, the teacher should recite this series of mantras.
