सर्वं समाचरेद्भक्त्या वित्त शाठ्यविवर्जितः
He should perform everything with devotion, avoiding deceit regarding wealth.
गावं स दद्याच्छक्त्या तु सुवर्णाढ्यां पयस्विनीम्
He should give, according to his ability, a cow adorned with gold and yielding milk.
अनेन विधिना यस्तु कुर्यात्कमलसप्तमीम्
Whoever performs the Kamala Saptami according to this procedure—
कल्पेकल्पे तथा लोकान्सप्त गत्वा पृथक्पृथक् 4.50.
In every age, he attains the seven worlds, each separately.
यः पश्यतीदं शृणुयान्मुहूर्तं पठेच्च भक्त्या सुमतिं ददाति
Whoever sees, hears, or recites this with devotion for even a moment is granted good understanding.
शुभसप्तमीव्रतवर्णनम् यामुपोष्य नरो रोगाच्छोकदुःखात्प्रमुच्यते
Description of the auspicious Saptamī vow: By observing it, a person is freed from disease, sorrow, and suffering.
पुण्य आश्वयुजे मासि कृतस्नानः पयः शुचिः
In the holy month of Āśvayuja, having bathed and purified with milk, one should be clean.
कपिलां पूजयेद्भक्त्या गन्धमाल्यानुलेपनैः
With devotion, one should worship a tawny cow with fragrant substances, garlands, and ointments.
त्वामहं शुभकल्याणशरीरां सर्वसिद्धये
O auspicious one of blessed form, I worship you for the attainment of all accomplishments.
काञ्चनं वृषभं तद्वद्वस्त्रमाल्यगुडान्वितम्
One should offer a golden bull, along with cloth, garlands, and jaggery.
पञ्चगव्यं च संप्राश्य स्वप्याद्भूमौ विमत्सरः
After consuming pañcagavya, one should sleep on the ground without envy.
अनेन विधिना दद्यान्मासिमासि सदा नरः
A person should give in this manner every month, always.
संवत्सरांते शयनमिक्षुदण्डगुडान्वितम्
At the end of the year, one should give a bed furnished with a sugarcane staff and jaggery.
ताम्रपात्रं तिलप्रस्थं सौवर्णवृषसंयुतम्
A copper vessel, a prastha of sesame, and a golden bull should be given.
अनेन विधिना राजन्कुर्याद्यः शुभसप्तमीम् 4.51.
O King, whoever performs the auspicious Saptamī in this way—
अप्सरोगणगन्धर्वैः पूज्यमानः सुरालये
—is honored in the abode of the gods by hosts of Apsarās and Gandharvas.
स कल्पादवतीर्णस्तु सप्तद्वीपाधिपो भवेत्
He descends at the end of a kalpa and becomes the lord of the seven continents.
नाशङ्करोति पुण्येयं कृता वै शुभसप्तमी
One should not doubt that performing this auspicious Saptamī brings merit.
इमां पठेद्यः शृणुया न्मुहूर्तं वीक्षेत संगादपि दीयमानम्
Whoever recites, hears, or even glances at this for a moment, or receives it from others—
स्नपनसप्तमीव्रतवर्णनम् युधिष्ठिर उवाच मृतवत्सादिकार्येषु दुःस्वप्ने च किमिष्यते
Description of the Snapanasaptamī vow. Yudhiṣṭhira said: What is to be done in cases of a dead child, or after a bad dream?
रोगर्दौर्गत्यरूपेण तथैवेष्टविघातनैः
Through disease, misfortune, or obstacles to desired aims—
तद्विघाताय वक्ष्यामि सदा कल्याणसप्तमीम्
For the removal of those obstacles, I shall always declare the auspicious Saptamī.
बालानां मरणं यत्र क्षीरपानं प्रशस्यते
Where the death of children occurs, drinking milk is praised.
शान्तये तत्र वक्ष्यामि मृतवत्सादिके च यत्
For peace in that situation, I will tell you what should be done in the case of a child who dies like a calf.
वराहकल्पे संप्राप्ते मनोर्वैवस्वतेंऽतरे
When the Varaha Kalpa arrived, in the interval of Manu Vaivasvata,
आसीन्नृपोत्तमः पूर्वं कृतवीर्यः प्रतापवान्
There was formerly a great and powerful king named Kritavirya.
यावद्वर्षसहस्राणि सप्तसप्तति भारत
For seventy-seven thousand years, O Bharata,
यवनस्य तु शापेन विनाशमगमत्पुरा
By the curse of a Yavana, he was destroyed in ancient times.
उपवासव्रतैर्दिव्यैर्वेदसूक्तैश्च भारत 4.52.१
By means of divine fasts, vows, and Vedic hymns, O Bharata,
कृतवीर्येण वै पृष्टः प्रोवाचेदं बृहस्पतिः
When questioned by Kritavirya, Brihaspati spoke these words:
