अकस्माद्वैश्यजा प्राप्ता तत्करं सा तदास्पृशत्
Suddenly, a woman of the Vaishya caste approached; she touched his hand at that time.
हा रामकृष्ण प्रद्युम्नानिरुद्धेति पुनःपुनः
She repeatedly cried, 'O Rama, Krishna, Pradyumna, Aniruddha!'
द्विज आह च विप्रोऽहं त्र्यहं शूल्यां निरूपितः
The Brahmin said, 'I am a Vipra; for three days I have been placed upon a stake.'
श्रुत्वा धनवती तस्मा उद्वाह्य मोहिनीं सुताम् 3.2.18.
Hearing this, Dhanavati gave Mohini, her daughter, in marriage.
द्विजः प्राह शृणु व्यंगे यदा ते हृच्छयो भवेत्
The Brahmin said, 'Listen, O beautiful one, when you have a longing in your heart—'
इत्युक्त्वा मरणं प्राप्य यमलोकं गतो द्विजः
Having spoken thus, the Brahmin met death and went to the realm of Yama.
मातुर्गृहे तु सा नारी मोहिनी यौवनान्विता
Mohini, now a woman endowed with youth, remained in her mother's house.
के भोगाश्च किमाश्चर्यं को जागर्ति शयीत कः
What pleasures are there, what wonders, who keeps vigil, and who sleeps?
इति श्लोकं द्विजानाह नोत्तरं च ददुर्द्विजाः
Thus the twice-born spoke the verse, and the Brahmins did not give a reply.
तामुवाच प्रसन्नात्मा शृणु मोहिनि सुंदरि शय्या च भूषणं ज्ञेयो भोगो ह्यष्टविधो बुधैः
To her, the one with a serene mind said: 'Listen, O enchanting and beautiful one; bed, ornament, and enjoyment are to be known as eightfold by the wise.'
अहन्यहनि भूतानि म्रियन्ते जनयन्ति च
Day after day, beings die and are also born.
यो विवेकं समासाद्य कुरुते कर्मसंग्रहम्
He who, having attained discernment, undertakes the collection of actions—
संसाराजगरं ज्ञात्वा वैराग्यं योऽकरोद्भुवि 3.2.18.
He who, knowing the serpent of worldly existence, developed detachment on earth—
संकल्पाज्जायते कामस्ततो लोभः प्रजायते
From intention arises desire; from that, greed is produced.
जलप्रकृत्यां यो जातो रसो रसविकारवान्
He who is born of the nature of water possesses taste and the modifications of taste.
रुद्रात्काल्यां समुद्भूतो मोहो हृदि च लोकहा
From Rudra, in Kali, arose delusion, which destroys people in the heart.
मिथ्यादृष्टिस्ततो जाता मोहस्य दयिताभवत्
From that delusion, false perception was born, and became its beloved.
तयोः सकाशात्संजातं दुःखं शोकसमन्वितम्
From the union of those two, suffering arose, accompanied by sorrow.
मानी शूरश्च चतुरोऽधिकारी गुणवान्सखा
Proud, heroic, clever, authoritative, and virtuous was the friend.
तस्यै गर्भं च विप्रोऽसौ दत्त्वा स्वर्णं गृहीतवान्
To her, the Brahmin gave a child and, having received gold, took it.
कदाचिद्दशमासांते मोहिनीमब्रवीच्छिवः
Once, at the end of ten months, Shiva spoke to Mohini.
दोलामध्ये सहस्रं च स्वर्णं चैव स्वबालकम्
In the middle of the swing, a thousand pieces of gold and the child were there.
शिवेन बोधितो राजा सुतार्थी रुद्रपूजकः 3.2.18.
Instructed by Shiva, the king, desiring a son and a worshipper of Rudra, acted.
कारयित्वा जातकर्म विततार धनं बहु
Having performed the birth-rites, he distributed much wealth.
पितुरन्ते च तद्राज्यं प्राप्य धर्मं प्रकाशयन्
At his father's end, having obtained that kingdom, he displayed righteousness.
त्रयो हस्तास्तदा जाताः स राजा विस्मितोऽभवत्
Then three hands were born; the king was astonished.
इत्युक्त्वा स तु वैतालो नृपतिं प्राह भो नृप
Having said this, the Vetala then spoke to the king, 'O King...'
द्रव्यार्थी पंडितो ज्ञेयो गुरुतुल्यश्च भूपतिः
A learned man who seeks wealth, and a king who is like a guru, are to be known as such.
निरयान्निःसृतो विप्र स्वर्गलोकं समागतः
O Brahmin, having emerged from hell, he attained the world of heaven.
चित्रकूटे च नृपती रूपदत्त इति श्रुतः
On Citrakūṭa, there was a king known as Rūpadatta.
