गताः सप्ताधुना मासा भीमसेन तवानुजः । नायाति कस्य वा हेतोः नाहं वेदेदमञ्जसा
Now seven months have passed, and your younger brother Bhīmasena has not returned; for what reason, I do not know at all.
अपि देवर्षिणाऽऽदिष्टः स कालोऽयमुपस्थितः । यदाऽऽत्मनोऽङ्गमाक्रीडं भगवान् उत्सिसृक्षति
Has the time foretold by the divine sage now arrived, when the Lord intends to relinquish His earthly play?
यस्मान्नः सम्पदो राज्यं दाराः प्राणाः कुलं प्रजाः । आसन् सपत्नविजयो लोकाश्च यदनुग्रहात्
For by His grace we obtained wealth, kingdom, wives, life, family, subjects, victory over enemies, and even the worlds.
पश्योत्पातान् नरव्याघ्र दिव्यान् भौमान् सदैहिकान् । दारुणान्शंसतोऽदूराद् भयं नो बुद्धिमोहनम्
See these portents, O tiger among men—celestial, terrestrial, and bodily—terrible and ominous, appearing nearby, filling us with fear and confusion.
ऊर्वक्षिबाहवो मह्यं स्फुरन्त्यङ्ग पुनः पुनः । वेपथुश्चापि हृदये आरात् दास्यन्ति विप्रियम्
My thighs, eyes, and arms are trembling again and again, and my heart is unsteady; surely, something inauspicious is approaching.
शिवैषोद्यन्तं आदित्यं अभिरौति अनलानना । मामङ्ग सारमेयोऽयं अभिरेभत्यभीरुवत्
The she-jackal, with fiery mouth, howls at the rising sun; and, O dear one, this dog is crying at me like one who is afraid.
शस्ताः कुर्वन्ति मां सव्यं दक्षिणं पशवोऽपरे । वाहांश्च पुरुषव्याघ्र लक्षये रुदतो मम
Animals are circling me on the left and the right, and, O best of men, I see my horses weeping.
मृत्युदूतः कपोतोऽयं उलूकः कम्पयन् मनः । प्रत्युलूकश्च कुह्वानैः अनिद्रौ शून्यमिच्छतः
This pigeon, a messenger of death, and the owl, unsettling my mind, and the screeching of the night-owl—these portend sleeplessness and emptiness.
धूम्रा दिशः परिधयः कम्पते भूः सहाद्रिभिः । निर्घातश्च महांस्तात साकं च स्तनयित्नुभिः
The quarters are filled with smoke, the horizons tremble along with the mountains, and, O dear one, there are great thunderclaps together with lightning.
वायुर्वाति खरस्पर्शो रजसा विसृजंस्तमः । असृग् वर्षन्ति जलदा बीभत्सं इव सर्वतः
The wind blows harshly, scattering dust and darkness; the clouds rain blood everywhere, in a most dreadful manner.
सूर्यं हतप्रभं पश्य ग्रहमर्दं मिथो दिवि । ससङ्कुलैर्भूतगणैः ज्वलिते इव रोदसी
See the sun, its brilliance dimmed, and the planets colliding in the sky, while the heavens seem ablaze and crowded with strange beings.
नद्यो नदाश्च क्षुभिताः सरांसि च मनांसि च । न ज्वलत्यग्निराज्येन कालोऽयं किं विधास्यति
The rivers and streams are agitated, the lakes and minds as well; the fire does not blaze even with ghee. What will this time bring?
न पिबन्ति स्तनं वत्सा न दुह्यन्ति च मातरः । रुदन्त्यश्रुमुखा गावो न हृष्यन्ति ऋषभा व्रजे
Calves do not drink from their mothers' udders, nor do the cows yield milk; the cows, with tearful faces, cry and the bulls in the herd do not rejoice.
दैवतानि रुदन्तीव स्विद्यन्ति ह्युच्चलन्ति च । इमे जनपदा ग्रामाः पुरोद्यानाकराश्रमाः । भ्रष्टश्रियो निरानन्दाः किमघं दर्शयन्ति नः
The deities seem to weep, sweat, and tremble; these towns, villages, gardens, lakes, and hermitages have lost their splendor and joy. What misfortune are they showing us?
मन्य एतैर्महोत्पातैः नूनं भगवतः पदैः । अनन्यपुरुषश्रीभिः हीना भूर्हतसौभगा
I think, by these great omens, surely the earth has been deprived of the feet of the Lord, and of those unique persons endowed with His fortune, and has lost its prosperity.
इति चिन्तयतस्तस्य दृष्टारिष्टेन चेतसा । राज्ञः प्रत्यागमद् ब्रह्मन् यदुपुर्याः कपिध्वजः
While he was thus reflecting, with a mind disturbed by these portents, O Brahman, the one with the monkey-banner returned from the city of the Yadus.
तं पादयोः निपतितं अयथापूर्वमातुरम् । अधोवदनं अब्बिन्दून् सृजन्तं नयनाब्जयोः
He saw him fallen at his feet, unlike before, distressed, his face lowered, shedding drops from the lotus of his eyes.
विलोक्य उद्विग्नहृदयो विच्छायं अनुजं नृपः । पृच्छति स्म सुहृत् मध्ये संस्मरन् नारदेरितम्
Seeing his brother, whose heart was troubled and whose appearance was changed, the king questioned him in the midst of friends, recalling Narada's words.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच । कच्चिदानर्तपुर्यां नः स्वजनाः सुखमासते । मधुभोजदशार्हार्ह सात्वतान्धकवृष्णयः
Yudhishthira said: Are our relatives in Anarta city living happily—the Madhus, Bhojas, Dasharhas, Ahukas, Satvatas, Andhakas, and Vrishnis?
शूरो मातामहः कच्चित् स्वस्त्यास्ते वाथ मारिषः । मातुलः सानुजः कच्चित् कुशल्यानकदुन्दुभिः
Is Shura, our maternal grandfather, well, and is his wife also well? Is our uncle, along with his younger brothers, safe—Anakadundubhi?
सप्त स्वसारस्तत्पत्न्यो मातुलान्यः सहात्मजाः । आसते सस्नुषाः क्षेमं देवकीप्रमुखाः स्वयम्
Are the seven sisters, their husbands, other maternal uncles with their sons, and their daughters-in-law, led by Devaki herself, all well?
कच्चित् राजाऽऽहुको जीवति असत्पुत्रोऽस्य चानुजः । हृदीकः ससुतोऽक्रूरो जयन्तगदसारणाः
Is King Ahuka alive, and his wicked son and younger brother? Is Hridika with his son, Akrura, Jayanta, Gada, and Sarana well?
आसते कुशलं कच्चित् ये च शत्रुजिदादयः । कच्चिदास्ते सुखं रामो भगवान् सात्वतां प्रभुः
Are those like Shatrujit and others safe? Is Rama, the Lord of the Satvatas, living happily?
प्रद्युम्नः सर्ववृष्णीनां सुखमास्ते महारथः । गम्भीररयोऽनिरुद्धो वर्धते भगवानुत
Is Pradyumna, the great chariot-warrior of all the Vrishnis, well? Is Aniruddha, deep in his passions, growing and blessed?
सुषेणश्चारुदेष्णश्च साम्बो जाम्बवतीसुतः । अन्ये च कार्ष्णिप्रवराः सपुत्रा ऋषभादयः
Are Sushena, Charudesha, Samba—the son of Jambavati—and others, the foremost of the Karsnis, with their sons, like Rishabha, well?
तथैवानुचराः शौरेः श्रुतदेवोद्धवादयः । सुनन्दनन्दशीर्षण्या ये चान्ये सात्वतर्षभाः
And likewise, are the followers of Shauri—Shrutadeva, Uddhava, Sunanda, Nanda, Shirishanya, and other chief Satvatas—well?
अपि स्वस्त्यासते सर्वे रामकृष्ण भुजाश्रयाः । अपि स्मरन्ति कुशलं अस्माकं बद्धसौहृदाः
Are all those who rely on the arms of Rama and Krishna safe? Do those bound by friendship remember our welfare?
भगवानपि गोविन्दो ब्रह्मण्यो भक्तवत्सलः । कच्चित्पुरे सुधर्मायां सुखमास्ते सुहृद्वृतः
Is Govinda, the Lord, devoted to Brahmanas and affectionate to his devotees, living happily in the city of Sudharma, surrounded by friends?
मङ्गलाय च लोकानां क्षेमाय च भवाय च । आस्ते यदुकुलाम्भोधौ आद्योऽनन्तसखः पुमान्
For the welfare, safety, and prosperity of the worlds, does the primeval, infinite friend, the man, remain in the ocean of the Yadu dynasty?
यद्बाहुदण्डगुप्तायां स्वपुर्यां यदवोऽर्चिताः । क्रीडन्ति परमानन्दं महापौरुषिका इव
When the Yadus are honored in their own city, protected by many strong arms, they play in supreme bliss, like great heroes.
