जन्मैश्वर्यश्रुतश्रीभिः एधमानमदः पुमान् । नैवार्हत्यभिधातुं वै त्वां अकिञ्चनगोचरम्
A person who grows proud from birth, wealth, learning, and beauty cannot truly address you, for you are accessible only to those who possess nothing.
नमोऽकिञ्चनवित्ताय निवृत्तगुणवृत्तये । आत्मारामाय शान्ताय कैवल्यपतये नमः
Salutations to you, the wealth of those who have nothing, whose activity is free from the modes, who delights in the self, who is peaceful, and who is the Lord of liberation.
मन्ये त्वां कालमीशानं अनादिनिधनं विभुम् । समं चरन्तं सर्वत्र भूतानां यन्मिथः कलिः
I consider you to be Time, the ruler, beginningless and endless, all-pervading, moving equally among all beings, whose mutual discord arises from you.
(वंशस्थ) न वेद कश्चिद् भगवंश्चिकीर्षितं तवेहमानस्य नृणां विडम्बनम् । न यस्य कश्चिद् दयितोऽस्ति कर्हिचिद् द्वेष्यश्च यस्मिन्विषमा मतिर्नृणाम्
No one knows, O Lord, your intention, your actions in this world are a mockery of men; you have no one whom you favor or hate, yet people hold partiality in their minds.
(अनुष्टुप्) जन्म कर्म च विश्वात्मन् अजस्याकर्तुरात्मनः । तिर्यङ् नृषिषु यादःसु तद् अत्यन्तविडम्बनम्
Birth and deeds of the soul of the universe, of the unborn, non-acting self, among beasts, humans, and aquatic creatures—these are the utmost mockery.
(वसंततिलका) गोप्याददे त्वयि कृतागसि दाम तावद् या ते दशाश्रुकलिल अञ्जन संभ्रमाक्षम् । वक्त्रं निनीय भयभावनया स्थितस्य सा मां विमोहयति भीरपि यद्बिभेति
When the gopī took a rope to bind you for your mischief, and your eyes, troubled by fear, were smeared with tears and ointment, you bowed your face in dread—this bewilders me, for even the fearful fear you.
(अनुष्टुप्) केचिद् आहुः अजं जातं पुण्यश्लोकस्य कीर्तये । यदोः प्रियस्य अन्ववाये मलयस्येव चन्दनम्
Some say the unborn was born for the fame of the virtuous, in the line of Yadu, his beloved, just as sandalwood grows in the Malaya mountains.
अपरे वसुदेवस्य देवक्यां याचितोऽभ्यगात् । अजस्त्वमस्य क्षेमाय वधाय च सुरद्विषाम्
Others say that, being requested by Vasudeva and Devakī, you, the unborn one, appeared for the protection of this world and the destruction of those who hate the gods.
भारावतारणायान्ये भुवो नाव इवोदधौ । सीदन्त्या भूरिभारेण जातो ह्यात्मभुवार्थितः
Some say you were born at the request of Brahmā, when the earth, weighed down by a heavy burden, was sinking like a boat in the ocean, in order to relieve her load.
भवेऽस्मिन् क्लिश्यमानानां अविद्याकामकर्मभिः । श्रवण स्मरणार्हाणि करिष्यम् इति केचन
Others say that you have come to perform deeds worthy of being heard and remembered by those suffering in this world from ignorance, desire, and action.
(वंशस्थ) श्रृण्वन्ति गायन्ति गृणन्त्यभीक्ष्णशः स्मरन्ति नन्दन्ति तवेहितं जनाः । त एव पश्यन्त्यचिरेण तावकं भवप्रवाहोपरमं पदाम्बुजम्
Those people who constantly hear, sing, praise, remember, and rejoice in your deeds here, soon behold your lotus feet, which bring an end to the flow of worldly existence.
अप्यद्य नस्त्वं स्वकृतेहित प्रभो जिहाससि स्वित् सुहृदोऽनुजीविनः । येषां न चान्यत् भवतः पदाम्बुजात् परायणं राजसु योजितांहसाम्
O Lord, will you now abandon us, your devoted friends and dependents, for whose sake there is no other refuge but your lotus feet, though we are bound to kingship and its sins?
(अनुष्टुप्) के वयं नामरूपाभ्यां यदुभिः सह पाण्डवाः । भवतोऽदर्शनं यर्हि हृषीकाणां इव ईशितुः
Who are we, the Pāṇḍavas, along with the Yadus, but mere names and forms? When you, the Lord of the senses, are not seen, we are as nothing.
नेयं शोभिष्यते तत्र यथेदानीं गदाधर । त्वत्पदैः अङ्किता भाति स्वलक्षणविलक्षितैः
O Gadādhara, this earth will not shine as it does now, adorned by your feet, marked with their unique signs.
इमे जनपदाः स्वृद्धाः सुपक्वौषधिवीरुधः । वनाद्रि नदी उदन्वन्तो ह्येधन्ते तव वीक्षितैः
These lands are prosperous, their herbs and plants well-ripened; forests, mountains, rivers, and oceans flourish, all because of your glances.
अथ विश्वेश विश्वात्मन् विश्वमूर्ते स्वकेषु मे । स्नेहपाशं इमं छिन्धि दृढं पाण्डुषु वृष्णिषु
Therefore, O Lord of the universe, soul of the universe, form of the universe, please cut this strong bond of affection in me for the Pāṇḍavas and the Vṛṣṇis.
त्वयि मेऽनन्यविषया मतिर्मधुपतेऽसकृत् । रतिं उद्वहतात् अद्धा गङ्गेवौघं उदन्वति
O Lord of Madhu, may my mind, without any other object, always bear love for you directly, just as the Ganges flows unbroken to the sea.
(वसंततिलका) श्रीकृष्ण कृष्णसख वृष्णि ऋषभावनिध्रुग् राजन्यवंशदहन अनपवर्ग वीर्य । गोविन्द गोद्विजसुरार्तिहरावतार योगेश्वराखिलगुरो भगवन् नमस्ते
O Śrī Kṛṣṇa, friend of Kṛṣṇa, chief of the Vṛṣṇis, destroyer of the unrighteous, fire among royal lines, whose power brings liberation, Govinda, who relieves the distress of cows, brāhmaṇas, and gods, master of yoga, teacher of all, O Lord, I bow to you.
सूत उवाच । (अनुष्टुप्) पृथयेत्थं कलपदैः परिणूताखिलोदयः । मन्दं जहास वैकुण्ठो मोहयन्निव मायया
Sūta said: Thus praised by Pṛthā with sweet words, the all-auspicious Lord Vaikuṇṭha smiled gently, as if bewildering her with his māyā.
तां बाढं इति उपामंत्र्य प्रविश्य गजसाह्वयम् । स्त्रियश्च स्वपुरं यास्यन् प्रेम्णा राज्ञा निवारितः
Having affectionately bid her farewell, he entered Hastināpura; but as he was about to depart for his own city with the women, the king stopped him out of love.
व्यासाद्यैरीश्वरेहा ज्ञैः कृष्णेनाद्भुतकर्मणा । प्रबोधितोऽपि इतिहासैः नाबुध्यत शुचार्पितः
Though instructed by Vyāsa and other sages, and by Kṛṣṇa, performer of wondrous deeds, and though taught with histories, he did not understand, being overwhelmed by grief.
आह राजा धर्मसुतः चिन्तयन् सुहृदां वधम् । प्राकृतेनात्मना विप्राः स्नेहमोहवशं गतः
The king, son of Dharma, thinking of the slaughter of his friends, spoke, O brāhmaṇas, overcome by attachment and delusion, with a mind of ordinary men.
अहो मे पश्यताज्ञानं हृदि रूढं दुरात्मनः । पारक्यस्यैव देहस्य बह्व्यो मेऽक्षौहिणीर्हताः
Alas, see my ignorance, deeply rooted in my wicked heart! For the sake of another's body, I have caused the death of many armies.
बालद्विजसुहृन् मित्र पितृभ्रातृगुरु द्रुहः । न मे स्यात् निरयात् मोक्षो ह्यपि वर्ष अयुत आयुतैः
Even if I were freed from hell for ten thousand times ten thousand years, I would not be released from the sin of harming children, brāhmaṇas, friends, kin, fathers, brothers, and teachers.
नैनो राज्ञः प्रजाभर्तुः धर्मयुद्धे वधो द्विषाम् । इति मे न तु बोधाय कल्पते शासनं वचः
The killing of enemies in a righteous war is not a sin for a king who protects his people; yet, these words of command do not bring me understanding.
स्त्रीणां मत् हतबंधूनां द्रोहो योऽसौ इहोत्थितः । कर्मभिः गृहमेधीयैः नाहं कल्पो व्यपोहितुम्
The enmity that has arisen here against women whose relatives have been slain, through the actions of householders, I am not able to remove.
यथा पङ्केन पङ्काम्भः सुरया वा सुराकृतम् । भूतहत्यां तथैवैकां न यज्ञैः मार्ष्टुमर्हति
Just as mud cannot cleanse muddy water, nor liquor remove the stain of liquor, so too a single act of killing living beings cannot be purified by sacrifices.
जपश्च परमो गुह्यः श्रूयतां मे नृपात्मज । यं सप्तरात्रं प्रपठन् पुमान् पश्यति खेचरान्
And now, O prince, listen to the supreme secret mantra, which, when recited for seven nights, enables a person to see the beings who move in the sky.
ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय । मन्त्रेणानेन देवस्य कुर्याद् द्रव्यमयीं बुधः । सपर्यां विविधैर्द्रव्यैः देशकालविभागवित्
Om, obeisance to the Blessed Lord Vāsudeva. With this mantra of the Lord, the wise should perform worship with material offerings, using various substances, knowing the proper place and time.
सलिलैः शुचिभिर्माल्यैः वन्यैर्मूलफलादिभिः । शस्ताङ्कुरांशुकैश्चार्चेत् तुलस्या प्रियया प्रभुम्
He should worship the Lord with pure water, flowers, wild roots, fruits, tender sprouts, and fresh garments, and especially with the beloved tulasī leaves.
