( अनुष्टुप् ) अथ ऋत्विजो महाशीलाः सदस्या ब्रह्मवादिनः । ब्रह्मक्षत्रियविट्शुद्रा राजानो ये समागताः
Then the officiants of great virtue, the sages, and the brahminical scholars, along with the assembled kings of the brahmin, kshatriya, vaishya, and shudra classes, gathered there.
देवर्षिपितृभूतानि लोकपालाः सहानुगाः । पूजितास्तं अनुज्ञाप्य स्वधामानि ययुर्नृप
The gods, sages, ancestors, spirits, and guardians of the worlds, along with their attendants, having been honored, gave their permission and returned to their own abodes.
हरिदासस्य राजर्षे राजसूयमहोदयम् । नैवातृप्यन् प्रशंसन्तः पिबन् मर्त्योऽमृतं यथा
The royal sages did not tire of praising Haridasa’s grand Rajasuya, just as a mortal does not tire of drinking nectar.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा सुहृत् संबंन्धि बान्धवान् । प्रेम्णा निवारयामास कृष्णं च त्यागकातरः
Then King Yudhishthira, with affection, bade farewell to his friends, relatives, and kinsmen, and with reluctance to part, to Krishna as well.
भगवानपि तत्राङ्ग न्यवात्सीत् तत्प्रियंकरः । प्रस्थाप्य यदुवीरांश्च साम्बादींश्च कुशस्थलीम्
The Blessed Lord, who brings joy to his dear ones, remained there for a time, after sending the Yadu heroes, including Samba and others, to Kusasthali.
इत्थं राजा धर्मसुतो मनोरथमहार्णवम् । सुदुस्तरं समुत्तीर्य कृष्णेनासीद् गतज्वरः
Thus, the son of Dharma, the king, crossed the vast ocean of his cherished desires—so difficult to traverse—and, with Krishna’s help, became free from distress.
एकदान्तःपुरे तस्य वीक्ष्य दुर्योधनः श्रियम् । अतप्यद् राजसूयस्य महित्वं चाच्युतात्मनः
Once, in the king’s palace, Duryodhana beheld the splendor and felt tormented by the greatness of the Rajasuya and the glory of the Lord Achyuta.
( वसंततिलका ) यस्मिन् नरेन्द्रदितिजेन्द्र सुरेन्द्रलक्ष्मीः नाना विभान्ति किल विश्वसृजोपकॢप्ताः । ताभिः पतीन्द्रुपदराजसुतोपतस्थे यस्यां विषक्तहृदयः कुरुराडतप्यत्
In that place, where the wealth of kings, demons, and gods—variously arranged by the Creator—shone forth, the lord stood beside the daughter of Drupada, and Kururaja’s heart was ensnared and tormented.
यस्मिन् तदा मधुपतेर्महिषीसहस्रं श्रोणीभरेण शनकैः क्वणदङ्घ्रिशोभम् । मध्ये सुचारु कुचकुङ्कुमशोणहारं श्रीमन्मुखं प्रचलकुण्डलकुन्तलाढ्यम्
There, at that time, a thousand queens of Madhupati, with their heavy hips and softly tinkling anklets, surrounded the radiant face adorned with crimson necklaces and beautiful earrings and flowing locks.
( अनुष्टुप् ) सभायां मयकॢप्तायां क्वापि धर्मसुतोऽधिराट् । वृतोऽनुगैर्बन्धुभिश्च कृष्णेनापि स्वचक्षुषा
In the assembly hall built by Maya, the son of Dharma, the emperor, sat surrounded by followers and kinsmen, and by Krishna, who watched with his own eyes.
आसीनः काञ्चने साक्षात् आसने मघवानिव । पारमेष्ठ्यश्रीया जुष्टः स्तूयमानश्च वन्दिभिः
Seated on a golden throne, like Indra himself, endowed with supreme prosperity, he was praised by bards.
तत्र दुर्योधनो मानी परीतो भ्रातृभिर्नृप । किरीटमाली न्यविशद् असिहस्तः क्षिपन् रुषा
There, Duryodhana, proud and surrounded by his brothers, wearing a crown and garland, sat with sword in hand, casting it down in anger.
स्थलेऽभ्यगृह्णाद् वस्त्रान्तं जलं मत्वा स्थलेऽपतत् । जले च स्थलवद् भ्रान्त्या मयमायाविमोहितः
On the floor, he grasped the edge of a garment, thinking it was water, but it was dry; and in the water, he mistook it for solid ground, bewildered by Maya’s illusion.
जहास भीमस्तं दृष्ट्वा स्त्रियो नृपतयोऽपरे । निवार्यमाणा अप्यङ्ग राज्ञा कृष्णानुमोदिताः
Bhima laughed at him upon seeing this, as did the women and other kings; though the king tried to restrain them, Krishna approved their laughter.
( मिश्र ) स व्रीडितोऽवाग्वदनो रुषा ज्वलन् निष्क्रम्य तूष्णीं प्रययौ गजाह्वयम् । हाहेति शब्दः सुमहानभूत् सतां अजातशत्रुर्विमना इवाभवत् । बभूव तूष्णीं भगवान्भुवो भरं समुज्जिहीर्षुर्भ्रमति स्म यद् दृशा
Ashamed, with downcast face and burning with anger, he left silently for Gajaha; a great cry of 'Alas!' arose among the virtuous, and Ajatasatru was troubled in mind; the Blessed Lord remained silent, wishing to relieve the earth’s burden, and watched with wandering eyes.
( अनुष्टुप् ) एतत्तेऽभिहितं राजन् यत्पृष्टोऽहमिह त्वया । सुयोधनस्य दौरात्म्यं राजसूये महाक्रतौ
O King, thus I have told you what you asked about—the wickedness of Suyodhana at the great Rajasuya sacrifice.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे उत्तरार्धे दुर्योधनमानभंगो नाम पञ्चसप्ततितमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the seventy-fifth chapter, called 'The Humbling of Duryodhana’s Pride,' in the tenth canto, second half, of the glorious Bhagavata Purana, the scripture of the supreme swans.
शाल्वस्य यदुभिः सह युद्धम् - श्रीशुक उवाच - ( अनुष्टुप् ) अथान्यदपि कृष्णस्य श्रृणु कर्माद्भुतं नृप । क्रीडानरशरीरस्य यथा सौभपतिर्हतः
Battle of Shalva with the Yadus—Shri Shuka said: Now hear another wondrous deed of Krishna, O King, how the playful, bodyless Lord slew the lord of Saubha.
शिशुपालसखः शाल्वो रुक्मिण्युद्वाह आगतः । यदुभिर्निर्जितः सङ्ख्ये जरासन्धादयस्तथा
Shalva, friend of Shishupala, came to the wedding of Rukmini; he was defeated in battle by the Yadus, as were Jarasandha and others.
शाल्वः प्रतिज्ञामकरोत् श्रृण्वतां सर्वभूभुजाम् । अयादवां क्ष्मां करिष्ये पौरुषं मम पश्यत
Shalva made a vow before all the kings: 'I will make the earth free of the Yadavas—witness my valor.'
इति मूढः प्रतिज्ञाय देवं पशुपतिं प्रभुम् । आराधयामास नृपः पांसुमुष्टिं सकृद् ग्रसन्
Thus, having made such a foolish vow, the king worshipped the Lord, the master of creatures, by swallowing a handful of dust just once.
संवत्सरान्ते भगवान् आशुतोष उमापतिः । वरेण च्छन्दयामास शाल्वं शरणमागतम्
At the end of a year, the gracious Lord, the husband of Uma, being easily pleased, offered a boon to Shalva, who had come to him for refuge.
देवासुरमनुष्याणां गन्धर्वोरगरक्षसाम् । अभेद्यं कामगं वव्रे स यानं वृष्णिभीषणम्
He chose a vehicle, terrifying to the Vrishnis, which could go anywhere at will and could not be broken by gods, demons, humans, Gandharvas, serpents, or Rakshasas.
तथेति गिरिशादिष्टो मयः परपुरंजयः । पुरं निर्माय शाल्वाय प्रादात् सौभमयस्मयम्
‘So be it,’ said Girisha, and as instructed by him, Maya, the conqueror of enemy cities, constructed an iron city called Saubha and gave it to Shalva.
स लब्ध्वा कामगं यानं तमोधाम दुरासदम् । ययस्द्वारवतीं शाल्वो वैरं वृष्णिकृतं स्मरन्
Having obtained that wish-fulfilling, formidable, and impenetrable vehicle, Shalva set out for Dvaravati, remembering the enmity caused by the Vrishnis.
निरुध्य सेनया शाल्वो महत्या भरतर्षभ । पुरीं बभञ्जोपवनान् उद्यानानि च सर्वशः
O best of the Bharatas, Shalva besieged the city with his great army and destroyed all the suburbs and gardens.
सगोपुराणि द्वाराणि प्रासादाट्टालतोलिकाः । विहारान् स विमानाग्र्यान् निपेतुः शस्त्रवृष्टयः
The gates with their towers, the palaces, balconies, pleasure grounds, and lofty mansions—all were struck by showers of weapons.
शिला द्रुमाश्चाशनयः सर्पा आसारशर्कराः । प्रचण्डश्चक्रवातोऽभूत् रजसाच्छादिता दिशः
Stones, trees, thunderbolts, serpents, and showers of gravel fell, and a fierce whirlwind arose, covering the directions with dust.
इत्यर्द्यमाना सौभेन कृष्णस्य नगरी भृशम् । नाभ्यपद्यत शं राजन् त्रिपुरेण यथा मही
Thus, as Krishna’s city was being severely harassed by Saubha, O King, it found no peace, just as the earth did when attacked by Tripura.
प्रद्युम्नो भगवान् वीक्ष्य बाध्यमाना निजाः प्रजाः । म भैष्टेत्यभ्यधाद् वीरो रथारूढो महायशाः
Seeing his own people afflicted, the glorious and heroic Pradyumna mounted his chariot and said, ‘Do not fear!’
