Bhagavata Purana

युयुधानो विकर्णश्च हार्दिक्यो विदुरादयः । बाह्लीकपुत्रा भूर्याद्या ये च सन्तर्दनादयः

Yuyudhāna, Vikarṇa, Hārdikya, Vidura and others, the sons of Bāhlīka, Bhūri and the Santardanas—all were assigned various duties.

निरूपिता महायज्ञे नानाकर्मसु ते तदा । प्रवर्तन्ते स्म राजेन्द्र राज्ञः प्रियचिकीर्षवः

Thus, all those appointed to various tasks in the great sacrifice, O king, acted with the desire to please the king.

( वसंततिलका ) ऋत्विक् सदस्यबहुवित्सु सुहृत्तमेषु स्विष्टेषु सूनृतसमर्हणदक्षिणाभिः । चैद्ये च सात्वतपतेश्चरणं प्रविष्टे चक्रुस्ततस्त्ववभृथ स्नपनं द्युनद्याम्

When the officiating priests, assistants, and best of friends had been duly honored with gifts, sweet words, and proper hospitality, and when the Lord of the Sātvatas had entered the sacrificial arena after slaying Śiśupāla, they then performed the concluding bath in the celestial river.

( अनुष्टुप् ) मृदङ्‌गशङ्खपणव धुन्धुर्यानकगोमुखाः । वादित्राणि विचित्राणि नेदुरावभृथोत्सवे

The mridanga, conch, panava, dhundhuri, anaka, and gomukha—various instruments—resounded in the ritual bath festival.

नर्तक्यो ननृतुर्हृष्टा गायका यूथशो जगुः । वीणावेणुतलोन्नादः तेषां स दिवमस्पृशत्

Joyful dancers danced, and groups of singers sang; the sound of the vina, flute, and clapping rose up and touched the heavens.

चित्रध्वजपताकाग्रैः इभेन्द्रस्यन्दनार्वभिः । स्वलङ्कृतैर्भटैर्भूपा निर्ययू रुक्ममालिनः

Kings adorned with golden garlands departed, riding elephants and chariots decorated with colorful banners and flags, accompanied by their splendidly adorned warriors.

यदुसृञ्जयकाम्बोज कुरुकेकयकोशलाः । कम्पयन्तो भुवं सैन्यैः यजनपुरःसराः

The Yadus, Sṛñjayas, Kambojas, Kurus, Kekayas, and Kosalas, leading their armies, shook the earth as they proceeded to the sacrifice.

सदस्यर्त्विग्द्‌विजश्रेष्ठा ब्रह्मघोषेण भूयसा । देवर्षिपितृगन्धर्वाः तुष्टुवुः पुष्पवर्षिणः

The distinguished sages, officiants, and best of the twice-born, with loud chanting of Vedic hymns, were praised by the gods, sages, ancestors, and gandharvas, who showered flowers.

स्वलंकृता नरा नार्यो गन्धस्रग् भूषणाम्बरैः । विलिंपन्त्यो अभिसिंच विजह्रुर्विविधै रसैः

Men and women, adorned with fragrant garlands, ornaments, and fine garments, playfully sprinkled each other and enjoyed various delights.

तैलगोरसगन्धोद हरिद्रासान्द्रकुंकुमैः । पुम्भिर्लिप्ताः प्रलिंपन्त्यो विजह्रुर्वारयोषितः

Women, smeared with oil, cow's ghee, fragrant powders, turmeric, and rich saffron, playfully rubbed and enjoyed with the men.

( वसंततिलका ) गुप्ता नृभिर्निरगमन्नुपलब्धुमेतद् देव्यो यथा दिवि विमानवरैर्नृदेव्यः । ता मातुलेयसखिभिः परिषिच्यमानाः सव्रीडहासविकसद् वदना विरेजुः

Protected by men, the queens went out unnoticed, like divine ladies in celestial chariots; as they were sprinkled by their maternal relatives and friends, their faces shone with bashful smiles.

ता देवरानुत सखीन् सिन्सिषिचुर्दृतीभिः क्लिन्नाम्बरा विवृतगात्रकुचोरुमध्याः । औत्सुक्यमुक्त कवरा च्च्यवमानमाल्याः क्षोभं दधुर्मलधियां रुचिरैर्विहारैः

Those queens, together with their friends, sprinkled the gods with enthusiasm; their garments wet, bodies and breasts exposed, their loosened garlands falling, they stirred the minds of those with impure thoughts by their charming play.

( अनुष्टुप् ) स सम्राड् रथमारुढः सदश्वं रुक्ममालिनम् । व्यरोचत स्वपत्‍नीभिः क्रियाभिः क्रतुराडिव

The emperor, mounted on a chariot drawn by fine horses and adorned with gold, shone among his wives, like the lord of a sacrifice among its rituals.

पत्‍नीसंयाजावभृथ्यैः चरित्वा ते तमृत्विजः । आचान्तं स्नापयां चक्रुः गंगायां सह कृष्णया

After performing the ritual bath with his wives, the officiants, having purified themselves, bathed him in the Ganges together with Krishna.

देवदुन्दुभयो नेदुः नरदुंदुभिभिः समम् । मुमुचुः पुष्पवर्षाणि देवर्षिपितृमानवाः

Divine drums resounded together with human drums; the gods, sages, ancestors, and humans showered flowers.

सस्नुस्तत्र ततः सर्वे वर्णाश्रमयुता नराः । महापातक्यपि यतः सद्यो मुच्येत किल्बिषात्

There, all men, belonging to every class and stage of life, bathed; for even those guilty of great sins are instantly freed from impurity.

अथ राजाहते क्षौमे परिधाय स्वलङ्कृतः । ऋत्विक् सदस्य विप्रादीन् आनर्चाभरणाम्बरैः

Then the king, wearing fine silk and splendidly adorned, honored the officiants, sages, and brahmins with ornaments and garments.

बन्धूञ्ज्ञातीन् नृपान् मित्र सुहृदोऽन्यांश्च सर्वशः । अभीक्ष्णं पूजयामास नारायणपरो नृपः

The king, devoted to Narayana, repeatedly honored his relatives, acquaintances, kings, friends, and all others.

( वसंततिलका ) सर्वे जनाः सुररुचो मणिकुण्डलस्रग् उष्णीषकञ्चुक दुकूलमहार्घ्यहाराः । नार्यश्च कुण्डलयुगालकवृन्दजुष्ट वक्त्रश्रियः कनकमेखलया विरेजुः

All the people shone with divine radiance, wearing jeweled earrings, garlands, turbans, jackets, fine cloth, and precious necklaces; the women, adorned with pairs of earrings and groups of bangles, their faces beautiful, shone with golden girdles.

( अनुष्टुप् ) अथ ऋत्विजो महाशीलाः सदस्या ब्रह्मवादिनः । ब्रह्मक्षत्रियविट्शुद्रा राजानो ये समागताः

Then the officiants of great virtue, the sages, and the brahminical scholars, along with the assembled kings of the brahmin, kshatriya, vaishya, and shudra classes, gathered there.

देवर्षिपितृभूतानि लोकपालाः सहानुगाः । पूजितास्तं अनुज्ञाप्य स्वधामानि ययुर्नृप

The gods, sages, ancestors, spirits, and guardians of the worlds, along with their attendants, having been honored, gave their permission and returned to their own abodes.

हरिदासस्य राजर्षे राजसूयमहोदयम् । नैवातृप्यन् प्रशंसन्तः पिबन् मर्त्योऽमृतं यथा

The royal sages did not tire of praising Haridasa’s grand Rajasuya, just as a mortal does not tire of drinking nectar.

ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा सुहृत् संबंन्धि बान्धवान् । प्रेम्णा निवारयामास कृष्णं च त्यागकातरः

Then King Yudhishthira, with affection, bade farewell to his friends, relatives, and kinsmen, and with reluctance to part, to Krishna as well.

भगवानपि तत्राङ्‌ग न्यवात्सीत् तत्प्रियंकरः । प्रस्थाप्य यदुवीरांश्च साम्बादींश्च कुशस्थलीम्

The Blessed Lord, who brings joy to his dear ones, remained there for a time, after sending the Yadu heroes, including Samba and others, to Kusasthali.

इत्थं राजा धर्मसुतो मनोरथमहार्णवम् । सुदुस्तरं समुत्तीर्य कृष्णेनासीद् गतज्वरः

Thus, the son of Dharma, the king, crossed the vast ocean of his cherished desires—so difficult to traverse—and, with Krishna’s help, became free from distress.

एकदान्तःपुरे तस्य वीक्ष्य दुर्योधनः श्रियम् । अतप्यद् राजसूयस्य महित्वं चाच्युतात्मनः

Once, in the king’s palace, Duryodhana beheld the splendor and felt tormented by the greatness of the Rajasuya and the glory of the Lord Achyuta.

( वसंततिलका ) यस्मिन् नरेन्द्रदितिजेन्द्र सुरेन्द्रलक्ष्मीः नाना विभान्ति किल विश्वसृजोपकॢप्ताः । ताभिः पतीन्द्रुपदराजसुतोपतस्थे यस्यां विषक्तहृदयः कुरुराडतप्यत्

In that place, where the wealth of kings, demons, and gods—variously arranged by the Creator—shone forth, the lord stood beside the daughter of Drupada, and Kururaja’s heart was ensnared and tormented.

यस्मिन् तदा मधुपतेर्महिषीसहस्रं श्रोणीभरेण शनकैः क्वणदङ्‌घ्रिशोभम् । मध्ये सुचारु कुचकुङ्कुमशोणहारं श्रीमन्मुखं प्रचलकुण्डलकुन्तलाढ्यम्

There, at that time, a thousand queens of Madhupati, with their heavy hips and softly tinkling anklets, surrounded the radiant face adorned with crimson necklaces and beautiful earrings and flowing locks.

( अनुष्टुप् ) सभायां मयकॢप्तायां क्वापि धर्मसुतोऽधिराट् । वृतोऽनुगैर्बन्धुभिश्च कृष्णेनापि स्वचक्षुषा

In the assembly hall built by Maya, the son of Dharma, the emperor, sat surrounded by followers and kinsmen, and by Krishna, who watched with his own eyes.
