तं तु ते विरथं चक्रुः चत्वारश्चतुरो हयान् । एकस्तु सारथिं जघ्ने चिच्छेदान्यः शरासनम्
But they made him chariotless: four struck four horses, one killed the charioteer, and another cut his bow.
तं बद्ध्वा विरथीकृत्य कृच्छ्रेण कुरवो युधि । कुमारं स्वस्य कन्यां च स्वपुरं जयिनोऽविशन्
Having bound him and made him chariotless with difficulty in battle, the victorious Kurus entered their city with the prince and their own daughter.
तच्छ्रुत्वा नारदोक्तेन राजन् सञ्जातमन्यवः । कुरून् प्रत्युद्यमं चक्रुः उग्रसेनप्रचोदिताः
Hearing this from Narada, O King, the Vrishnis became angry and, urged by Ugrasena, prepared to confront the Kurus.
सान्त्वयित्वा तु तान् रामः सन्नद्धान् वृष्णिपुङ्गवान् । नैच्छय् कुरूणां वृष्णीनां कलिं कलिमलापहः
But Rama, after pacifying the armed leaders of the Vrishnis, did not wish for conflict between the Kurus and Vrishnis, being the remover of discord.
जगाम हास्तिनपुरं रथेनादित्यवर्चसा । ब्राह्मणैः कुलवृद्धैश्च वृतश्चन्द्र इव ग्रहैः
He went to Hastinapura in a radiant chariot, surrounded by Brahmins and elders of his lineage, like the moon among stars.
गत्वा गजाह्वयं रामो बाह्योपवनमास्थितः । उद्धवं प्रेषयामास धृतराष्ट्रं बुभुत्सया
Having reached Gajahvaya, Rama stayed in the outer gardens and sent Uddhava to inquire of Dhritarashtra.
सोऽभिवन्द्याम्बिकापुत्रं भीष्मं द्रोणं च बाह्लिकम् । दुर्योधनं च विधिवद् राममागतमब्रवीत्
Uddhava, after respectfully greeting Ambika's son, Bhishma, Drona, Bahlik, and Duryodhana according to custom, announced Rama's arrival.
तेऽतिप्रीतास्तमाकर्ण्य प्राप्तं रामं सुहृत्तमम् । तमर्चयित्वाभिययुः सर्वे मङ्गलपाणयः
Hearing that Rama, their dearest friend, had arrived, they were exceedingly pleased; after honoring him, all approached with auspicious offerings.
तं सङ्गम्य यथान्यायं गामर्घ्यं च न्यवेदयन् । तेषां ये तत्प्रभावज्ञाः प्रणेमुः शिरसा बलम्
Meeting him properly, they presented him with the cow and water for worship; those who knew his greatness bowed their heads to Balarama.
बन्धून् कुशलिनः श्रुत्वा पृष्ट्वा शिवमनामयम् । परस्परमथो रामो बभाषेऽविक्लवं वचः
Having heard that their relatives were well, and after inquiring about their welfare, then Rama spoke words without hesitation to them.
उग्रसेनः क्षितीशेशो यद् व आज्ञापयत् प्रभुः । तद् अव्यग्रधियः श्रुत्वा कुरुध्वं माविलम्बितम्
Ugrasena, the lord of the earth, whatever command he gives, you should hear it with undisturbed mind and carry it out without delay.
यद् यूयं बहवस्त्वेकं जित्वाधर्मेण धार्मिकम् । अबध्नीताथ तन्मृष्ये बन्धूनामैक्यकाम्यया
Though you are many, you bound the righteous one by unrighteous means, having defeated him; I tolerate this for the sake of unity among relatives.
वीर्यशौर्यबलोन्नद्धं आत्मशक्तिसमं वचः । कुरवो बलदेवस्य निशम्योचुः प्रकोपिताः
The Kurus, provoked, heard the words of Balarāma, which were filled with vigor, heroism, and strength, and equal to his own power.
अहो महच्चित्रमिदं कालगत्या दुरत्यया । आरुरुक्षत्युपानद् वै शिरो मुकुटसेवितम्
Ah, how astonishing is this! By the unstoppable movement of time, one who wishes to ascend wears shoes while his head is adorned with a crown.
एते यौनेन संबद्धाः सहशय्यासनाशनाः । वृष्णयस्तुल्यतां नीता अस्मद् दत्तनृपासनाः
These Vṛṣṇis, joined by youth, sharing beds, seats, and meals, have been made equal to us, and we have given them royal seats.
चामरव्यजने शङ्खं आतपत्रं च पाण्डुरम् । किरीटमासनं शय्यां भुञ्जन्त्यस्मदुपेक्षया
They enjoy the fan, fly-whisk, conch, white umbrella, crown, throne, and bed, all due to our neglect.
( इंद्रवंशा ) अलं यदूनां नरदेवलाञ्छनैः दातुः प्रतीपैः फणिनामिवामृतम् । येऽस्मत्प्रसादोपचिता हि यादवा आज्ञापयन्त्यद्य गतत्रपा बत
Enough of the Yādavas being marked by royal honors, bestowed by the donor, like nectar to serpents; those Yādavas, who have prospered by our favor, today command us, shamelessly.
( अनुष्टुप् ) कथमिन्द्रोऽपि कुरुभिः भीष्मद्रोणार्जुनादिभिः । अदत्तमवरुन्धीत सिंहग्रस्तमिवोरणः
How could even Indra, with the Kurus—Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Arjuna, and others—seize what was not given, like a lion snatching prey in the forest?
श्रीबादरायणिरुवाच - जन्मबन्धुश्रीयोन्नद्ध मदास्ते भरतर्षभ । आश्राव्य रामं दुर्वाच्यं असभ्याः पुरमाविशन्
Śrī Bādarāyaṇa said: Their pride, inflated by birth, kinship, and wealth, made them arrogant, O best of the Bharatas; after speaking harsh words to Rāma, those uncivil men entered the city.
दृष्ट्वा कुरूनां दौःशील्यं श्रुत्वावाच्यानि चाच्युतः । अवोचत् कोपसंरब्धो दुष्प्रेक्ष्यः प्रहसन् मुहुः
Seeing the wickedness of the Kurus and hearing their offensive words, Acyuta, angered and difficult to look at, spoke repeatedly, laughing.
नूनं नानामदोन्नद्धाः शान्तिं नेच्छन्त्यसाधवः । तेषां हि प्रशमो दण्डः पशूनां लगुडो यथा
Surely, these wicked ones, puffed up with various kinds of pride, do not desire peace; for them, restraint is punishment, just as a stick is for animals.
अहो यदून् सुसंरब्धाम् कृष्णं च कुपितं शनैः । सान्त्वयित्वाहमेतेषां शममिच्छन् इहागतः
Ah, I have come here desiring peace, having gently calmed the enraged Yādus and Kṛṣṇa.
त इमे मन्दमतयः कलहाभिरताः खलाः । तं मामवज्ञाय मुहुः दुर्भाषान् मानिनोऽब्रुवन्
These dull-minded, quarrelsome, wicked ones, repeatedly disregarded me and spoke disrespectful words, proud as they are.
नोग्रसेनः किल विभुः भोजवृष्ण्यन्धकेश्वरः । शक्रादयो लोकपाला यस्यादेशानुवर्तिनः
Is not Ugrasena the mighty lord, ruler of the Bhojas, Vṛṣṇis, and Andhakas, whom even Indra and other guardians of the worlds obey?
सुधर्माऽऽक्रम्यते येन पारिजातोऽमराङ्घ्रिपः । आनीय भुज्यते सोऽसौ न किलाध्यासनार्हणः
He, by whom Sudharmā is entered, the Pārijāta tree is brought from the realm of the immortals and enjoyed, is surely not unworthy of the royal seat.
यस्य पादयुगं साक्षात् श्रीरुपास्तेऽखिलेश्वरी । स नार्हति किल श्रीशो नरदेवपरिच्छदान्
At whose feet Śrī herself serves directly, the sovereign of all, is he not worthy of royal honors and paraphernalia?
( वसंततिलका ) यस्याङ्घ्रिपङ्कजरजोऽखिललोकपालैः मौल्युत्तमैर्धृतमुपासिततीर्थतीर्थम् । ब्रह्मा भवोऽहमपि यस्य कलाः कलायाः श्रीश्चोद्वहेम चिरमस्य नृपासनं क्व
The dust of whose lotus feet is borne by the crowns of all guardians of the worlds, worshipped as the sacred of sacred places; Brahmā, Śiva, and I are but portions of his portion, and Śrī herself serves him for a long time—where is the royal seat for him?
( अनुष्टुप् ) भुञ्जते कुरुभिर्दत्तं भूखण्डं वृष्णयः किल । उपानहः किल वयं स्वयं तु कुरवः शिरः
The Vṛṣṇis enjoy the land given by the Kurus, while we ourselves are like shoes, and the Kurus are the crown upon the head.
अहो ऐश्वर्यमत्तानां मत्तानामिव मानिनाम् । असंबद्धा गिरो रुक्षाः कः सहेतानुशासीता
Ah, who could endure or instruct those intoxicated by wealth, whose words are incoherent and harsh, like those of the proud and drunken?
अद्य निष्कौरवं पृथ्वीं करिष्यामीत्यमर्षितः । गृहीत्वा हलमुत्तस्थौ दहन्निव जगत्त्रयम्
Enraged, he declared, 'Today I will make the earth free of the Kauravas!' Seizing his plough, he rose up as if to burn the three worlds.
