कृत्यानलः प्रतिहतः स रथान्गपाणेर्। अस्त्रौजसा स नृप भग्नमुखो निवृत्तः। वाराणसीं परिसमेत्य सुदक्षिणं तं। सर्त्विग्जनं समदहत्स्वकृतोऽभिचारः
O King, the fiery being created by the ritual, struck down by the power of the discus-wielder's weapon, was broken and turned back, its face defeated; then, entering Varanasi, it consumed Sudakshina and his priests—the very abhicara they had performed turned upon them.
चक्रं च विष्णोस्तदनुप्रविष्टं वाराणसीं साट्टसभालयापणाम्। सगोपुराट्टालककोष्ठसङ्कुलां सकोशहस्त्यश्वरथान्नशालिनीम्
Then, the discus of Vishnu entered Varanasi, with its palaces, assembly halls, and markets, crowded with gates, towers, and granaries, filled with treasuries, elephants, horses, chariots, and stores of grain.
दग्ध्वा वाराणसीं सर्वां विष्णोश्चक्रं सुदर्शनम्। भूयः पार्श्वमुपातिष्ठत्कृष्णस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः
Having burned all of Varanasi, the Sudarshana discus of Vishnu once again stood by the side of Krishna, the doer of flawless deeds.
य एनं श्रावयेन्मर्त्य उत्तमःश्लोकविक्रमम्। समाहितो वा शृणुयात्सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
Whoever, with focused mind, recites or hears this account of the exploits of the praiseworthy Lord, is freed from all sins.
रैवतके द्विविद्वधः - श्रीराजोवाच - ( अनुष्टुप् ) भूयोऽहं श्रोतुमिच्छामि रामस्याद्भुतकर्मणः । अनन्तस्याप्रमेयस्य यदन्यत् कृतवान् प्रभुः
The king said: Once more I wish to hear of the wondrous deeds of Rama, the immeasurable and infinite Lord—what else did that master accomplish?
श्रीशुक उवाच - नरकस्य सखा कश्चिद् द्विविदो नाम वानरः । सुग्रीवसचिवः सोऽथ भ्राता मैन्दस्य वीर्यवान्
Shuka said: There was a certain monkey named Dvivida, a friend of Naraka, a counselor of Sugriva, and the valiant brother of Mainda.
सख्युः सोऽपचितिं कुर्वन् वानरो राष्ट्रविप्लवम् । पुरग्रामाकरान् घोषान् अदहद् वह्निमुत्सृजन्
That monkey, seeking to avenge his friend, brought ruin to the land—he set fire to cities, villages, settlements, and cowherds' hamlets.
क्वचित् स शैलानुत्पाट्य तैर्देशान् समचूर्णयत् । आनर्तान् सुतरामेव यत्रास्ते मित्रहा हरिः
Sometimes, uprooting mountains, he crushed regions with them—especially in Anarta, where the slayer of his friend, Hari, resided.
क्वचित् समुद्रमध्यस्थो दोर्भ्यां उत्क्षिप्य तज्जलम् । देशान् नागायुतप्राणो वेलाकूले न्यमज्जयत्
At times, standing in the middle of the ocean, he would lift up its waters with his arms and submerge lands along the shore, possessing the strength of ten thousand elephants.
आश्रमान् ऋषिमुख्यानां कृत्वा भग्नवनस्पतीन् । अदूषयत् शकृत् मूत्रैः अग्नीन् वैतानिकान् खलः
He destroyed the hermitages of great sages by breaking their trees, and, wicked as he was, defiled their sacred fires with urine and excrement.
पुरुषान् योषितो दृप्तः क्ष्माभृद्द्रोणीगुहासु सः । निक्षिप्य चाप्यधाच्छैलैः पेशस्क्कास्कारीव कीटकम्
Arrogant, he seized men and women and cast them into mountain caves and valleys, then crushed them with rocks as a craftsman crushes insects.
एवं देशान् विप्रकुर्वन् दूषयंश्च कुलस्त्रियः । श्रुत्वा सुललितं गीतं गिरिं रैवतकं ययौ
Thus, as he ravaged the lands and violated noble women, he heard sweet singing and went to Mount Raivataka.
तत्रापश्यद् यदुपतिं रामं पुष्करमालिनम् । सुदर्शनीयसर्वाङ्गं ललनायूथमध्यगम्
There he saw Rama, the Lord of the Yadus, adorned with a garland of lotuses, beautiful in every limb, surrounded by groups of women.
गायन्तं वारुणीं पीत्वा मदविह्वललोचनम् । विभ्राजमानं वपुषा प्रभिन्नमिव वारणम्
He saw Rama singing, his eyes unsteady from drinking Varuni, his form radiant like a mighty elephant in rut.
दुष्टः शाखामृगः शाखां आरूढः कंपयन् द्रुमान् । चक्रे किलकिलाशब्दं आत्मानं संप्रदर्शयन्
That wicked monkey climbed a tree, shaking its branches, making loud noises, and drawing attention to himself.
तस्य धार्ष्ट्यं कपेर्वीक्ष्य तरुण्यो जातिचापलाः । हास्यप्रिया विजहसुः बलदेवपरिग्रहाः
Seeing the monkey's insolence, the young women, playful by nature and fond of laughter, who were companions of Balarama, burst into laughter.
ता हेलयामास कपिः भूक्षेपैः संमुखादिभिः । दर्शयन् स्वगुदं तासां रामस्य च निरीक्षितः
The monkey mocked them by throwing clods of earth and other things from the front, displaying his backside to them, all while being watched by Rama.
तं ग्राव्णा प्राहरत् क्रुद्धो बलः प्रहरतां वरः । स वञ्चयित्वा ग्रावाणं मदिराकलशं कपिः
Then, enraged, Balarāma—the foremost of those who strike—hurled a rock at him; but the monkey, deceiving the rock, seized the wine jar.
गृहीत्वा हेलयामास धूर्तस्तं कोपयन् हसन् । निर्भिद्य कलशं दुष्टो वासांस्यास्फालयद् बलम्
Taking hold of it, the cunning monkey mocked him, provoking him with laughter; wickedly breaking the jar, he scattered the garments of Balarāma.
कदर्थीकृत्य बलवान् विप्रचक्रे मदोद्धतः । तं तस्याविनयं दृष्ट्वा देशांश्च तदुपद्रुतान्
Overpowering Balarāma, intoxicated with pride, he acted insolently; seeing his disrespect and the regions disturbed by him—
क्रुद्धो मुसलमादत्त हलं चारिजिघांसया । द्विविदोऽपि महावीर्यः शालमुद्यम्य पाणिना
Angry, Balarāma took up his club and plough, desiring to kill his foe; but Dvivida, of great might, raised a giant tree with his hand.
अभ्येत्य तरसा तेन बलं मूर्धन्यताडयत् । तं तु सङ्कर्षणो मूर्ध्नि पतन्तमचलो यथा
Rushing swiftly, he struck Balarāma on the head with it; but Saṅkarṣaṇa stood unmoved, like a mountain struck from above.
प्रतिजग्राह बलवान् सुनन्देनाहनच्च तम् । मूषलाहतमस्तिष्को विरेजे रक्तधारया
The powerful Balarāma caught the tree and struck Dvivida with his club; his skull shattered by the blow, blood streamed forth.
गिरिर्यथा गैरिकया प्रहारं नानुचिन्तयन् । पुनरन्यं समुत्क्षिप्य कृत्वा निष्पत्रमोजसा
Like a mountain stained with red ochre, he did not heed the blow; again, seizing another tree, he stripped it of branches with force.
तेनाहनत् सुसङ्क्रुद्धः तं बलः शतधाच्छिनत् । ततोऽन्येन रुषा जघ्ने तं चापि शतधाच्छिनत्
With it, he struck fiercely, but Balarāma cut it to pieces a hundredfold; then, with another, he attacked in anger, and that too was cut to pieces a hundredfold.
एवं युध्यन् भगवता भग्ने भग्ने पुनः पुनः । आकृष्य सर्वतो वृक्षान् निर्वृक्षं अकरोद् वनम्
Thus, fighting with the Lord, as each tree was destroyed again and again, he pulled up all the trees around and made the forest treeless.
ततोऽमुञ्चच्छिलावर्षं बलस्योपर्यमर्षितः । तत्सर्वं चूर्णयामास लीलया मुसलायुधः
Then, enraged at Balarāma, he released a shower of rocks upon him; but Balarāma, wielding his club, effortlessly crushed them all.
स बाहू तालसङ्काशौ मुष्टीकृत्य कपीश्वरः । आसाद्य रोहिणीपुत्रं ताभ्यां वक्षस्यरूरुजत्
The lord of monkeys, making his arms like palm trunks, formed his fists; approaching the son of Rohiṇī, he struck him on the chest with both.
यादवेन्द्रोऽपि तं दोर्भ्यां त्यक्त्वा मुसललाङ्गले । जत्रावभ्यर्दयत्क्रुद्धः सोऽपतद् रुधिरं वमन्
But the chief of the Yadus, abandoning his club and plough, seized him with both arms in anger and pressed upon his collarbone; he fell, vomiting blood.
चकम्पे तेन पतता सटङ्कः सवनस्पतिः । पर्वतः कुरुशार्दूल वायुना नौरिवाम्भसि
As he fell, the earth trembled in fear, along with the trees; O tiger among Kurus, like a mountain rocked by the wind, or a boat on the water.
