Bhagavata Purana

प्रायुञ्जतासाद्य शरानसीन् गदाः शक्त्यृष्टिशूलान्यजिते रुषोल्बणाः । तच्छस्त्रकूटं भगवान् स्वमार्गणैः अमोघवीर्यस्तिलशश्चकर्त ह

Having reached the unconquered one, they hurled arrows, swords, maces, spears, javelins, and tridents in fierce wrath; Bhagavān, whose power never fails, cut their weapons to bits with his own arrows.

तान्पीठमुख्याननयद् यमक्षयं निकृत्तशीर्षोरुभुजाङ्घ्रिवर्मणः । स्वानीकपानच्युतचक्रसायकैः तथा निरस्तान् नरको धरासुतः

He sent those chiefs, led by Pīṭha, to the abode of Yama, their heads, arms, legs, and armor severed by his flying discus and arrows; thus Naraka, son of the earth, was defeated.

( वंशस्था ) निरीक्ष्य दुर्मर्षण आस्रवन्मदैः गजैः पयोधिप्रभवैर्निराक्रमात् । दृष्ट्वा सभार्यं गरुडोपरि स्थितं सूर्योपरिष्टात् सतडिद्‌घनं यथा । कृष्णं स तस्मै व्यसृजच्छतघ्नीं योधाश्च सर्वे युगपत् च विव्यधुः

Seeing this, Durmarṣaṇa, overflowing with pride, attacked with elephants born from the ocean; seeing Kṛṣṇa with his wife seated upon Garuḍa, like the sun atop a cloud with lightning, he hurled a hundred-slaying weapon at him, and all the warriors simultaneously attacked.

तद्‌भौमसैन्यं भगवान् गदाग्रजो विचित्रवाजैर्निशितैः शिलीमुखैः । निकृत्तबाहूरुशिरोध्रविग्रहं चकार तर्ह्येव हताश्वकुञ्जरम्

Bhagavān, elder of maces, struck the earth-born army with wondrous steeds and sharp arrows, cutting off their arms, thighs, heads, and bodies, and at that moment slew their horses and elephants.

( अनुष्टुप् ) यानि योधैः प्रयुक्तानि शस्त्रास्त्राणि कुरूद्वह । हरिस्तान्यच्छिनत् तीक्ष्णैः शरैरेकैक शस्त्रीभिः

O descendant of Kuru, whatever weapons and missiles the warriors launched, Hari cut them down, each with sharp arrows and sword-bearing shafts.

उह्यमानः सुपर्णेन पक्षाभ्यां निघ्नता गजान् । गुरुत्मता हन्यमानाः तुण्डपक्षनखैर्गजाः

Carried by Suparṇa, striking the elephants with his wings, Garuḍa slew them; the elephants were killed by his beak, wings, and claws.

पुरमेवाविशन्नार्ता नरको युध्ययुध्यत । दृष्ट्वा विद्रावितं सैन्यं गरुडेनार्दितं स्वकं

Naraka, distressed, entered the city, fighting as he went, seeing his army routed and tormented by Garuḍa.

तं भौमः प्राहरच्छक्त्या वज्रः प्रतिहतो यतः । नाकम्पत तया विद्धो मालाहत इव द्विपः

The earth-born one struck him with his weapon, but the thunderbolt was repelled; pierced by it, he did not tremble, like an elephant struck by a garland.

शूलं भौमोऽच्युतं हन्तुं आददे वितथोद्यमः । तद्विसर्गात् पूर्वमेव नरकस्य शिरो हरिः । अपाहरद् गजस्थस्य चक्रेण क्षुरनेमिना

The earth-born one, with futile effort, took up a spear to kill Acyuta; but before he could release it, Hari severed his head with the razor-edged discus, as he sat upon the elephant.

( मिश्र ) सकुण्डलं चारुकिरीटभूषणं बभौ पृथिव्यां पतितं समुज्ज्वलम् । हा हेति साध्वित्यृषयः सुरेश्वरा माल्यैर्मुकुन्दं विकिरन्त ईडिरे

His head, adorned with earrings and a beautiful crown, shone brilliantly as it fell upon the earth; the sages and lords of the gods exclaimed 'Alas! Well done!' and praised Mukunda, showering him with garlands.

ततश्च भूः कृष्णमुपेत्य कुण्डले । प्रतप्तजाम्बूनदरत्‍नभास्वरे । सवैजयन्त्या वनमालयार्पयत् प्राचेतसं छत्रमथो महामणिम्

Then the earth approached Krishna, bringing earrings radiant with refined gold and jewels, along with the Vaijayanti garland and a great jewel, and offered them, as well as a royal umbrella, to the son of Prachetas.

( अनुष्टुप् ) अस्तौषीदथ विश्वेशं देवी देववरार्चितम् । प्राञ्जलिः प्रणता राजन् भक्तिप्रवणया धिया

Then the goddess, worshipped by the best of gods, praised the Lord of the universe, O King, with hands joined and mind devoted in loving reverence.

भूमिरुवाच नमस्ते देवदेवेश शङ्खचक्रगदाधर । भक्तेच्छोपात्तरूपाय परमात्मन्नमोऽस्तु ते

Bhumi said: Obeisance to you, Lord of gods, bearer of conch, discus, and mace; who assumes forms according to the wishes of your devotees, Supreme Soul, I bow to you.

नमः पङ्कजनाभाय नमः पङ्कजमालिने । नमः पङ्कजनेत्राय नमस्ते पङ्कजाङ्घ्रये

Salutations to you, lotus-naveled one; salutations to you, adorned with a garland of lotuses; salutations to you, lotus-eyed one; obeisance to you, whose feet are like lotuses.

नमो भगवते तुभ्यं वासुदेवाय विष्णवे । पुरुषायादिबीजाय पूर्णबोधाय ते नमः

Salutations to you, Bhagavan, Vāsudeva, Viṣṇu, the Supreme Person, the original seed, the one of complete knowledge; I bow to you.

अजाय जनयित्रेऽस्य ब्रह्मणेऽनन्तशक्तये । परावरात्मन् भूतात्मन् परमात्मन् नमोऽस्तु ते

Obeisance to you, unborn one, creator of this universe, of infinite power; soul of all, supreme and immanent, I bow to you.

( मिश्र ) त्वं वै सिसृक्षुरज उत्कटं प्रभो तमो निरोधाय बिभर्ष्यसंवृतः । स्थानाय सत्त्वं जगतो जगत्पते कालः प्रधानं पुरुषो भवान् परः

You, desiring to create, O unborn Lord, assume the fierce form to bring about dissolution; for the stability of the worlds, you are sattva, O Lord of the universe; time, matter, and the supreme person—you are all these.

अहं पयो ज्योतिरथानिलो नभो मात्राणि देवा मन इन्द्रियाणि । कर्ता महानित्यखिलं चराचरं त्वय्यद्वितीये भगवन्नयं भ्रमः

Earth, water, fire, air, ether, the senses, gods, mind, and the great principle—all that moves and does not move, O Lord, in you, the non-dual, this delusion does not exist.

तस्यात्मजोऽयं तव पादपङ्कजं भीतः प्रपन्नार्तिहरोपसादितः । तत् पालयैनं कुरु हस्तपङ्कजं शिरस्यमुष्याखिलकल्मषापहम्

This son of yours, frightened, has taken refuge at your lotus feet, seeking relief from distress; therefore, protect him—place your lotus hand, which removes all sin, upon his head.

श्रीशुक उवाच - ( अनुष्टुप् ) इति भूम्यर्थितो वाग्भिः भगवान् भक्तिनम्रया । दत्त्वाभयं भौमगृहं प्राविशत् सकलर्द्धिमत्

Śuka said: Thus addressed by Bhūmi with words of devotion and humility, the Lord granted her assurance and entered the opulent house of the earth-born one.

तत्र राजन्यकन्यानां षट्सहस्राधिकायुतम् । भौमाहृतानां विक्रम्य राजभ्यो ददृशे हरिः

There Hari saw over sixteen thousand royal maidens, seized by the earth-born one, whom he had rescued from the kings.

तं प्रविष्टं स्त्रियो वीक्ष्य नरवर्यं विमोहिताः । मनसा वव्रिरेऽभीष्टं पतिं दैवोपसादितम्

Seeing that best of men enter, the women, bewildered, desired him in their hearts as their chosen husband, brought to them by fate.

भूयात् पतिरयं मह्यं धाता तदनुमोदताम् । इति सर्वाः पृथक् कृष्णे भावेन हृदयं दधुः

"May this one become my husband, and may the Creator approve it"—thus, each of them, with individual feeling, gave her heart to Krishna.

ताः प्राहिणोद् द्वारवतीं सुमृष्टविरजोऽम्बराः । नरयानैर्महाकोशान् रथाश्वान् द्रविणं महत्

He sent them to Dvārakā, dressed in spotless garments, along with attendants, great treasures, chariots, horses, and abundant wealth.

ऐरावतकुलेभांश्च चतुर्दन्तांस्तरस्विनः । पाण्डुरांश्च चतुःषष्टिं प्रेरयामास केशवः

Keśava also dispatched sixty-four swift, four-tusked, white elephants from the line of Airāvata.

गत्वा सुरेन्द्रभवनं दत्त्वादित्यै च कुण्डले । पूजितस्त्रिदशेन्द्रेण सहेन्द्र्याण्या च सप्रियः

Having gone to the abode of the lord of the gods, and giving the earrings to Aditi, he was honored by the king of the gods together with his beloved Indrani.

चोदितो भार्ययोत्पाट्य पारीजातं गरुत्मति । आरोप्य सेन्द्रान् विबुधान् निर्जित्योपानयत् पुरम्

Urged by his wife, he uprooted the Parijata tree, placed it on Garuda, and, having defeated the gods along with Indra, brought it to his city.

स्थापितः सत्यभामाया गृहोद्यानोपशोभनः । अन्वगुर्भ्रमराः स्वर्गात् तद् गन्धासवलम्पटाः

He established it for Satyabhama, enhancing the beauty of her house-garden; and bees, greedy for its fragrance, followed it from heaven.

( मिश्र ) ययाच आनम्य किरीटकोटिभिः पादौ स्पृशन् अच्युतमर्थसाधनम् । सिद्धार्थ एतेन विगृह्यते महान् अहो सुराणां च तमो धिगाढ्यताम्

She bowed, touching Acyuta’s feet with the tips of her crown, and begged for the fulfillment of her desire; by this, the great one is considered accomplished—alas, how deep is the darkness of pride among the gods!
