भवापवर्गो भ्रमतो यदा भवेज्जनस्य तर्ह्यच्युत सत्समागमः। सत्सङ्गमो यर्हि तदैव सद्गतौ परावरेशे त्वयि जायते मतिः
When, after wandering in worldly existence, a person attains liberation, O Infallible One, it is then that he gains the association of the virtuous; and when such association occurs, at that very moment, devotion to You, Lord of all, arises.
मन्ये ममानुग्रह ईश ते कृतो राज्यानुबन्धापगमो यदृच्छया। यः प्रार्थ्यते साधुभिरेकचर्यया वनं विविक्षद्भिरखण्डभूमिपैः
O Lord, I consider it Your favor upon me that, by chance, attachment to kingdom has been removed—something sought by the virtuous, who, desiring to enter the forest, renounce the unbroken expanse of land.
न कामयेऽन्यं तव पादसेवनादकिञ्चनप्रार्थ्यतमाद्वरं विभो। आराध्य कस्त्वां ह्यपवर्गदं हरे वृणीत आर्यो वरमात्मबन्धनम्
O Master, I do not desire any boon other than service at Your feet, which is most sought after even by those who have nothing; for who, having worshiped You, the giver of liberation, would choose any other boon that binds the soul?
तस्माद्विसृज्याशिष ईश सर्वतो रजस्तमःसत्त्वगुणानुबन्धनाः। निरञ्जनं निर्गुणमद्वयं परं त्वां ज्ञाप्तिमात्रं पुरुषं व्रजाम्यहम्
Therefore, O Lord, abandoning all desires everywhere, which are bound to the qualities of passion, ignorance, and goodness, I approach You—the pure, qualityless, nondual, supreme Person, who is pure consciousness.
चिरमिह वृजिनार्तस्तप्यमानोऽनुतापैर्। अवितृषषडमित्रोऽलब्धशान्तिः कथञ्चित्। शरणद समुपेतस्त्वत्पदाब्जं परात्मन्। अभयमृतमशोकं पाहि मापन्नमीश
Long tormented here by suffering and remorse, afflicted by enemies such as thirst, never finding peace, I have somehow come to Your lotus feet, O shelter-giving Supreme Soul; protect me, O Lord, who am helpless, with fearlessness, immortality, and freedom from sorrow.
श्रीभगवानुवाच। सार्वभौम महाराज मतिस्ते विमलोर्जिता। वरैः प्रलोभितस्यापि न कामैर्विहता यतः
The Blessed Lord said: O great king, ruler of the earth, your mind is pure and steadfast, for even when tempted by boons, it has not been disturbed by desires.
प्रलोभितो वरैर्यत्त्वमप्रमादाय विद्धि तत्। न धीरेकान्तभक्तानामाशीर्भिर्भिद्यते क्वचित्
Know that your being tempted by boons was only to test your vigilance; for the mind of those with exclusive devotion is never shaken by blessings.
युञ्जानानामभक्तानां प्राणायामादिभिर्मनः। अक्षीणवासनं राजन्दृश्यते पुनरुत्थितम्
For those who practice yoga but lack devotion, O king, the mind, with its undiminished desires, is seen to rise again, even after control through breath and other means.
विचरस्व महीं कामं मय्यावेशितमानसः। अस्त्वेवं नित्यदा तुभ्यं भक्तिर्मय्यनपायिनी
Roam the earth as you wish, with your mind absorbed in Me; may you always have unwavering devotion to Me.
क्षात्रधर्मस्थितो जन्तून्न्यवधीर्मृगयादिभिः। समाहितस्तत्तपसा जह्यघं मदुपाश्रितः
While established in the duty of a warrior, you have killed creatures in hunting and other ways; but, being intent on this austerity and taking refuge in Me, cast off sin.
जन्मन्यनन्तरे राजन्सर्वभूतसुहृत्तमः। भूत्वा द्विजवरस्त्वं वै मामुपैष्यसि केवलम्
In your next birth, O king, you will become the best of twice-born, a supreme friend to all beings, and you will attain Me alone.
अथ द्विपञ्चाशत्तमोऽध्यायः 10.52 श्रीशुक उवाच। इत्थं सोऽनुग्रहीतोऽङ्ग कृष्णेनेक्ष्वाकु नन्दनः। तं परिक्रम्य सन्नम्य निश्चक्राम गुहामुखात्
Śuka said: Thus, O dear one, having been favored by Kṛṣṇa, the son of Ikṣvāku circumambulated him, bowed down, and departed from the mouth of the cave.
संवीक्ष्य क्षुल्लकान्मर्त्यान्पशून्वीरुद्वनस्पतीन्। मत्वा कलियुगं प्राप्तं जगाम दिशमुत्तराम्
Observing the small humans, animals, herbs, and trees, and realizing that the age of Kali had arrived, he went toward the northern direction.
तपःश्रद्धायुतो धीरो निःसङ्गो मुक्तसंशयः। समाधाय मनः कृष्णे प्राविशद्गन्धमादनम्
Endowed with austerity and faith, resolute, free from attachment and doubt, he fixed his mind on Kṛṣṇa and entered Gandhamādana.
बदर्याश्रममासाद्य नरनारायणालयम्। सर्वद्वन्द्वसहः शान्तस्तपसाराधयद्धरिम्
Reaching Badarī-āśrama, the abode of Nara and Nārāyaṇa, he, enduring all dualities and peaceful, worshipped Hari through austerities.
भगवान्पुनराव्रज्य पुरीं यवनवेष्टिताम्। हत्वा म्लेच्छबलं निन्ये तदीयं द्वारकां धनम्
The Lord, returning again to the city surrounded by Yavanas, slew the barbarian forces and brought their wealth to Dvārakā.
नीयमाने धने गोभिर्नृभिश्चाच्युतचोदितैः। आजगाम जरासन्धस्त्रयोविंशत्यनीकपः
As the wealth was being transported with cows and men, urged by Acyuta, Jarāsandha, the king with twenty-three armies, arrived.
विलोक्य वेगरभसं रिपुसैन्यस्य माधवौ। मनुष्यचेष्टामापन्नौ राजन्दुद्रुवतुर्द्रुतम्
Seeing the enemy army advancing swiftly and forcefully, the two Mādhavas, adopting human ways, quickly fled, O King.
विहाय वित्तं प्रचुरमभीतौ भीरुभीतवत्। पद्भ्यां पलाशाभ्यां चेलतुर्बहुयोजनम्
Abandoning abundant wealth, fearless though appearing afraid like cowards, they traveled many yojanas on foot with lotus-like feet.
पलायमानौ तौ दृष्ट्वा मागधः प्रहसन्बली। अन्वधावद्रथानीकैरीशयोरप्रमाणवित्
Seeing the two fleeing, the mighty king of Magadha laughed and pursued them with his chariot divisions, unaware of their true power.
प्रद्रुत्य दूरं संश्रान्तौ तुङ्गमारुहतां गिरिम्। प्रवर्षणाख्यं भगवान्नित्यदा यत्र वर्षति
After running a great distance and becoming exhausted, they climbed a high mountain called Pravarṣaṇa, where it always rains.
गिरौ निलीनावाज्ञाय नाधिगम्य पदं नृप। ददाह गिरिमेधोभिः समन्तादग्निमुत्सृजन्
Not finding their tracks on the mountain, the king, thinking them hidden, set fire to the mountain on all sides with burning materials.
तत उत्पत्य तरसा दह्यमानतटादुभौ। दशैकयोजनात्तुङ्गान्निपेततुरधो भुवि
Then, leaping swiftly from the burning slope, both descended from the ten-yojana-high peak to the ground below.
अलक्ष्यमाणौ रिपुणा सानुगेन यदूत्तमौ। स्वपुरं पुनरायातौ समुद्र परिखां नृप
Unseen by the enemy and his followers, the best of the Yadus returned again to their city, which was protected by the ocean, O King.
सोऽपि दग्धाविति मृषा मन्वानो बलकेशवौ। बलमाकृष्य सुमहन्मगधान्मागधो ययौ
Believing falsely that Balarāma and Keśava had been burned, the king of Magadha withdrew his vast army and returned to Magadha.
आनर्ताधिपतिः श्रीमान्रैवतो रैवतीं सुताम्। ब्रह्मणा चोदितः प्रादाद्बलायेति पुरोदितम्
The illustrious king of Ānarta, Raivata, prompted by Brahmā, gave his daughter Raivatī to Baladeva, as previously declared.
भगवानपि गोविन्द उपयेमे कुरूद्वह। वैदर्भीं भीष्मकसुतां श्रियो मात्रां स्वयंवरे
Govinda, the Lord, also married Vaidarbhī, the daughter of Bhīṣmaka and mother of Śrī, at her own svayaṃvara, O best of the Kurus.
प्रमथ्य तरसा राज्ञः शाल्वादींश्चैद्यपक्षगान्। पश्यतां सर्वलोकानां तार्क्ष्यपुत्रः सुधामिव
Having overpowered the kings—Śālva and the allies of Cedi—by force, before the eyes of all people, he took her as Garuḍa took the nectar.
श्रीराजोवाच। भगवान्भीष्मकसुतां रुक्मिणीं रुचिराननाम्। राक्षसेन विधानेन उपयेम इति श्रुतम्
The king said: It is heard that the Lord married Rukmiṇī, the beautiful-faced daughter of Bhīṣmaka, by the rākṣasa rite.
भगवन्श्रोतुमिच्छामि कृष्णस्यामिततेजसः। यथा मागधशाल्वादीन्जित्वा कन्यामुपाहरत्
O Lord, I wish to hear how Krishna, of immeasurable brilliance, after conquering Jarasandha, Shalva, and others, brought the maiden as his bride.
