प्रवेपितः स रुधिरं उद्‌वमन् मुखतोऽर्दितः । व्यसुः पपातोर्व्युपस्थे वाताहत इवाङ्‌घ्रिपः

He trembled, blood pouring from his mouth, tormented; his life departed, and he collapsed on the ground like a tree felled by the wind.

ततः कूटमनुप्राप्तं रामः प्रहरतां वरः । अवधीत् लीलया राजन् सावज्ञं वाममुष्टिना

Then Rāma, best among fighters, effortlessly slew Kūṭa, who had approached, with a contemptuous blow of his left fist, O King.

तर्ह्येव हि शलः कृष्ण प्रपदाहतशीर्षकः । द्विधा विदीर्णस्तोशलक उभावपि निपेततुः

At that very moment, Śala, his head struck by Kṛṣṇa’s foot, and Tośalaka, both split in two, fell down.

चाणूरे मुष्टिके कूटे शले तोशलके हते । शेषाः प्रदुद्रुवुर्मल्लाः सर्वे प्राणपरीप्सवः

With Cāṇūra, Muṣṭika, Kūṭa, Śala, and Tośalaka slain, all the remaining wrestlers, desiring to save their lives, fled.

गोपान् वयस्यान् आकृष्य तैः संसृज्य विजह्रतुः । वाद्यमानेषु तूर्येषु वल्गन्तौ रुतनूपुरौ

Drawing their cowherd friends together, they played joyfully with them as the musical instruments sounded, their anklets ringing as they danced.

जनाः प्रजहृषुः सर्वे कर्मणा रामकृष्णयोः । ऋते कंसं विप्रमुख्याः साधवः साधु साध्विति

All the people rejoiced at the deed of Rāma and Kṛṣṇa; except for Kaṃsa, the foremost brāhmaṇas and the virtuous exclaimed, 'Well done! Well done!'

हतेषु मल्लवर्येषु विद्रुतेषु च भोजराट् । न्यवारयत् स्वतूर्याणि वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह

When the best of the wrestlers were slain and the king of the Bhojas was agitated, he stopped his own musicians and spoke these words:

निःसारयत दुर्वृत्तौ वसुदेवात्मजौ पुरात् । धनं हरत गोपानां नन्दं बध्नीत दुर्मतिम्

Expel from the city those two wicked sons of Vasudeva; seize the wealth of the cowherds; bind Nanda, that evil-minded man.

वसुदेवस्तु दुर्मेधा हन्यतामाश्वसत्तमः । उग्रसेनः पिता चापि सानुगः परपक्षगः

Let Vasudeva, that wicked-minded one, be killed at once, along with the best of horses; and Ugrasena, my father, who sides with the enemy, along with his followers.

एवं विकत्थमाने वै कंसे प्रकुपितोऽव्ययः । लघिम्नोत्पत्य तरसा मञ्चमुत्तुङ्‌गमारुहत्

As Kaṃsa thus boasted, the imperishable one, enraged, leapt up swiftly and mounted the high platform.

तं आविशन्तमालोक्य मृत्युमात्मन आसनात् । मनस्वी सहसोत्थाय जगृहे सोऽसिचर्मणी

Seeing him approaching, death itself for him, Kaṃsa, resolute, sprang up suddenly from his seat and seized his shield and sword.

( मिश्र ) तं खड्गपाणिं विचरन्तमाशु श्येनं यथा दक्षिणसव्यमम्बरे । समग्रहीद् दुर्विषहोग्रतेजा यथोरगं तार्क्ष्यसुतः प्रसह्य

Wielding his sword, Kaṃsa moved about swiftly, like a hawk circling right and left in the sky; but the one of irresistible and fierce energy seized him forcefully, as Garuḍa would seize a serpent.

प्रगृह्य केशेषु चलत्किरीतं निपात्य रङ्‌गोपरि तुङ्‌गमञ्चात् । तस्योपरिष्टात् स्वत्स्वयमब्जनाभः पपात विश्वाश्रय आत्मतन्त्रः

Grabbing him by the hair, his crown shaking, he threw him down from the high platform onto the arena; and the lotus-naveled Lord himself, the refuge of the universe, self-dependent, fell upon him from above.

तं सम्परेतं विचकर्ष भूमौ हरिर्यथेभं जगतो विपश्यतः । हा हेति शब्दः सुमहान् तदाभूद् उदीरितः सर्वजनैर्नरेन्द्र

Hari dragged his lifeless body across the ground, as one would drag an elephant, while all the world looked on; then a great cry of 'Alas! Alas!' arose from all the people, O King.

स नित्यदोद्विग्नधिया तमीश्वरं पिबन् वदन् वा विचरन् स्वपन्श्वसन् । ददर्श चक्रायुधमग्रतो यतः तदेव रूपं दुरवापमाप

He, whose mind was always anxious, whether eating, speaking, moving, sleeping, or breathing, saw before him the Lord with the discus weapon; and thus attained that very form, which is difficult to obtain.

( अनुष्टुप् ) तस्यानुजा भ्रातरोऽष्टौ कंकन्यग्रोधकादयः । अभ्यधावन् अतिक्रुद्धा भ्रातुर्निर्वेशकारिणः

His eight brothers—Kaṅka, Nyagrodhaka, and the rest—rushed forward, extremely enraged, seeking to avenge their brother's death.

तथातिरभसांस्तांस्तु संयत्तात् रोहिणीसुतः । अहन् परिघमुद्यम्य पशूनिव मृगाधिपः

Then Rohiṇī's son, with great speed, struck them down, wielding his club, as a lion would strike down beasts.

नेदुर्दुन्दुभयो व्योम्नि ब्रह्मेशाद्या विभूतयः । पुष्पैः किरन्तस्तं प्रीताः शशंसुर्ननृतुः स्त्रियः

The drums resounded in the sky, and the divine powers led by Brahmā and Śiva, delighted, showered flowers upon him, praised him, and the women danced.

तेषां स्त्रियो महाराज सुहृन्मरणदुःखिताः । तत्राभीयुर्विनिघ्नन्त्यः शीर्षाण्यश्रुविलोचनाः

Their wives, O great king, afflicted with grief at the death of their beloveds, approached, beating their heads, their eyes filled with tears.

शयानान् न्वीरशय्यायां पतीन् आलिङ्‌ग्य शोचतीः । विलेपुः सुस्वरं नार्यो विसृजन्त्यो मुहुः शुचः

Embracing their husbands as they lay upon the heroes' beds, the women lamented in sweet voices, again and again releasing their sorrow.

हा नाथ प्रिय धर्मज्ञ करुणानाथवत्सल । त्वया हतेन निहता वयं ते सगृहप्रजाः

'Alas, lord, beloved, knower of righteousness, compassionate protector of the helpless! With you slain, we and our children and households are destroyed.'

त्वया विरहिता पत्या पुरीयं पुरुषर्षभ । न शोभते वयमिव निवृत्तोत्सवमङ्‌गला

'Deprived of you, our husband, this city, O best of men, is bereft of beauty, just as we are, with all festivals and auspiciousness ended.'

अनागसां त्वं भूतानां कृतवान् द्रोहमुल्बणम् । तेनेमां भो दशां नीतो भूतध्रुक् को लभेत शम्

'You have committed a grievous wrong against innocent beings; therefore, O slayer of creatures, who, having brought us to this state, can find peace?'

सर्वेषामिह भूतानां एष हि प्रभवाप्ययः । गोप्ता च तदवध्यायी न क्वचित् सुखमेधते

For all beings here, this indeed is the source of creation and dissolution; and as the protector, one who disregards this never attains happiness anywhere.

श्रीशुक उवाच - राजयोषित आश्वास्य भगवान् लोकभावनः । यामाहुर्लौकिकीं संस्थां हतानां समकारयत्

Śuka said: The Lord, creator of the worlds, comforted the royal women and performed for the slain the customary worldly funeral rites.

मातरं पितरं चैव मोचयित्वाथ बन्धनात् । कृष्णरामौ ववन्दाते शिरसा स्पृश्य पादयोः

Then, having released his mother and father from their bonds, Kṛṣṇa and Rāma bowed to them, touching their feet with their heads.

देवकी वसुदेवश्च विज्ञाय जगदीश्वरौ । कृतसंवन्दनौ पुत्रौ सस्वजाते न शङ्‌कितौ

Devakī and Vasudeva, recognizing their sons as the Lords of the universe, after receiving their reverence, embraced them without fear.

वसुदेवदेवकी सान्त्वनम्; उग्रसेनस्य राज्याभिषेकः; रामकृष्णयोरुपनयनं विद्याध्ययनं, गुरुर्मृतपुत्रस्यानयनं च - अथ पञ्चचत्वारिंशोऽध्यायः। श्रीशुक उवाच। पितरावुपलब्धार्थौ विदित्वा पुरुषोत्तमः। मा भूदिति निजां मायां ततान जनमोहिनीम्

Śuka said: The Supreme Person, understanding that his parents' desires had been fulfilled, spread his own deluding power, saying, 'Do not grieve,' bewildering the minds of people.

उवाच पितरावेत्य साग्रजः सात्वर्षभः। प्रश्रयावनतः प्रीणन्नम्ब तातेति सादरम्

Approaching his parents with his elder brother, the best of the Sātvatas, he bowed respectfully and, to please them, addressed them affectionately as 'Mother' and 'Father.'
