अश्नन्त्य एकास्तदपास्य सोत्सवा अभ्यज्यमाना अकृतोपमज्जनाः । स्वपन्त्य उत्थाय निशम्य निःस्वनं प्रपाययन्त्योऽर्भमपोह्य मातरः
Some, leaving their meals unfinished and the festival aside, came without bathing; others, rising from sleep at the sound, left their children unweaned and hurried out, even the mothers.
मनांसि तासामरविन्दलोचनः प्रगल्भलीलाहसितावलोकनैः । जहार मत्तद्विरदेन्द्रविक्रमो दृशां ददच्छ्रीरमणात्मनोत्सवम्
With his lotus eyes, bold playful glances, and gentle smiles, he stole the minds of those women, like a proud, intoxicated elephant, giving joy to their eyes and delight to their hearts.
( वसंततिलका ) दृष्ट्वा मुहुः श्रुतमनुद्रुतचेतसस्तं । तत्प्रेक्षणोत्स्मितसुधोक्षणलब्धमानाः । आनन्दमूर्तिमुपगुह्य दृशात्मलब्धं । हृष्यत्त्वचो जहुरनन्तमरिन्दमाधिम्
Seeing him again and again, their minds drawn to him as they had heard, the women, their pride awakened by his smiling glances, embraced with their eyes the embodiment of bliss and, their skin bristling with joy, forgot all their sorrows.
( अनुष्टुप् ) प्रासादशिखरारूढाः प्रीत्युत्फुल्लमुखाम्बुजाः । अभ्यवर्षन् सौमनस्यैः प्रमदा बलकेशवौ
The women, their faces blooming with joy, climbed to the tops of the mansions and showered flowers of good wishes upon the two boys, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma.
दध्यक्षतैः सोदपात्रैः स्रग्गन्धैरभ्युपायनैः । तावानर्चुः प्रमुदिताः तत्र तत्र द्विजातयः
The delighted brāhmaṇas, at various places, worshipped them with curds, unbroken rice, water vessels, garlands, fragrant substances, and other offerings.
ऊचुः पौरा अहो गोप्यः तपः किमचरन् महत् । या ह्येतावनुपश्यन्ति नरलोकमहोत्सवौ
The townspeople said: Oh, what great austerity did the cowherd women perform, that they are able to see these two, the great festival of the human world?
रजकं कञ्चिदायान्तं रङ्गकारं गदाग्रजः । दृष्ट्वायाचत वासांसि धौतान्यत्युत्तमानि च
As they went, Kṛṣṇa, the elder brother of Gadā, saw a washerman approaching, a dyer, and asked him for some fine, clean clothes.
देह्यावयोः समुचितानि अङ्ग वासांसि चार्हतोः । भविष्यति परं श्रेयो दातुस्ते नात्र संशयः
He said, 'O good man, give us suitable garments, for we are worthy; you will gain the highest good by giving—of this there is no doubt.'
स याचितो भगवता परिपूर्णेन सर्वतः । साक्षेपं रुषितः प्राह भृत्यो राज्ञः सुदुर्मदः
Thus requested by the Lord, who is perfect in every way, the king’s servant, full of arrogance, replied with contempt and anger.
ईदृशान्येव वासांसी नित्यं गिरिवनेचराः । परिधत्त किमुद्वृत्ता राजद्रव्याण्यभीप्सथ
He said, 'Such clothes are only for those who dwell in the forest and mountains; why do you, so bold, desire the king’s property?'
याताशु बालिशा मैवं प्रार्थ्यं यदि जिजीवीषा । बध्नन्ति घ्नन्ति लुम्पन्ति दृप्तं राजकुलानि वै
Go quickly, children; do not ask for such things if you wish to live. The royal households, proud as they are, bind, kill, and plunder.
एवं विकत्थमानस्य कुपितो देवकीसुतः । रजकस्य कराग्रेण शिरः कायादपातयत्
Thus boasting, the son of Devakī became angry and, with his hand, struck the washerman's head from his body.
तस्यानुजीविनः सर्वे वासःकोशान् विसृज्य वै । दुद्रुवुः सर्वतो मार्गं वासांसि जगृहेऽच्युतः
All his attendants, abandoning their bundles of garments, fled in every direction; Acyuta took the clothes.
वसित्वाऽऽत्मप्रिये वस्त्रे कृष्णः सङ्कर्षणस्तथा । शेषाण्यादत्त गोपेभ्यो विसृज्य भुवि कानिचित्
Having dressed in garments pleasing to themselves, both Kṛṣṇa and Saṅkarṣaṇa, gave the remaining clothes to the cowherds, leaving some on the ground.
ततस्तु वायकः प्रीतः तयोर्वेषमकल्पयत् । विचित्रवर्णैश्चैलेयैः आकल्पैरनुरूपतः
Then a tailor, delighted, prepared attire for the two, with garments of various colors and suitable designs.
नानालक्षणवेषाभ्यां कृष्णरामौ विरेजतुः । स्वलङ्कृतौ बालगजौ पर्वणीव सितेतरौ तस्य प्रसन्नो भगवान् प्रादात् सारूप्यमात्मनः । श्रियं च परमां लोके बलैश्वर्यस्मृतीन्द्रियम्
Kṛṣṇa and Rāma shone forth in their diverse attire, adorned like young elephants, one fair and one dark, at a festival. The Lord, pleased with him, granted likeness to Himself, supreme fortune in the world, strength, sovereignty, memory, and mastery of the senses.
ततः सुदाम्नो भवनं मालाकारस्य जग्मतुः । तौ दृष्ट्वा स समुत्थाय ननाम शिरसा भुवि
Then they went to the house of Sudāmā, the garland-maker; seeing them, he rose and bowed his head to the ground.
तयोरासनमानीय पाद्यं चार्घ्यार्हणादिभिः । पूजां सानुगयोश्चक्रे स्रक्ताम्बूलानुलेपनैः
Bringing seats for them, and with water for their feet, offerings, and other honors, he worshipped them along with their companions, with garlands, betel, and ointments.
प्राह नः सार्थकं जन्म पावितं च कुलं प्रभो । पितृदेवर्षयो मह्यं तुष्टा ह्यागमनेन वाम्
He said, 'O Lord, my birth has become meaningful and my lineage purified; my ancestors and gods are pleased with me by your arrival.'
भवन्तौ किल विश्वस्य जगतः कारणं परम् । अवतीर्णाविहांशेन क्षेमाय च भवाय च
You two are indeed the supreme cause of the universe, descended in partial form for the welfare and prosperity of the world.
न हि वां विषमा दृष्टिः सुहृदोर्जगदात्मनोः । समयोः सर्वभूतेषु भजन्तं भजतोरपि
Your vision is never partial, O friends and souls of the world; you are equal to all beings, even to those who worship or are worshipped by you.
तावज्ञापयतं भृत्यं किमहं करवाणि वाम् । पुंसोऽत्यनुग्रहो ह्येष भवद्भिः यन्नियुज्यते
Now command your servant—what shall I do for you? To be instructed by you is the highest favor a person can receive.
इत्यभिप्रेत्य राजेन्द्र सुदामा प्रीतमानसः । शस्तैः सुगन्धैः कुसुमैं माला विरचिता ददौ
Thinking thus, O King, Sudāmā, with a joyful heart, offered garlands made from excellent, fragrant flowers.
ताभिः स्वलङ्कृतौ प्रीतौ कृष्णरामौ सहानुगौ । प्रणताय प्रपन्नाय ददतुर्वरदौ वरान्
Adorned with those garlands, pleased, Kṛṣṇa and Rāma, along with their companions, granted boons to the one who had bowed and surrendered.
सोऽपि वव्रेऽचलां भक्तिं तस्मिन् एवाखिलात्मनि । तद्भक्तेषु च सौहार्दं भूतेषु च दयां पराम्
He chose unwavering devotion to that all-pervading Self, friendship with His devotees, and supreme compassion for all beings.
इति तस्मै वरं दत्त्वा श्रियं चान्वयवर्धिनीम् । बलमायुर्यशः कान्तिं निर्जगाम सहाग्रजः
Thus, granting him the boon and wealth that would increase his lineage, along with strength, long life, fame, and splendor, the Lord departed with His elder brother.
इति श्रीमद्भागवते महापुराणे पारमहंस्यां संहितायां दशमस्कन्धे पूर्वार्धे पुरप्रवेशो नाम एकचत्वारिंशोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the forty-first chapter, entitled 'Entry into the City,' in the first half of the tenth book of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, the great Purāṇa, the scripture of the supreme renunciates.
कुब्जायामनुग्रहः; धनुषो भङ्गः; मल्लशालासज्जीकरणं च - श्रीशुक उवाच - ( मिश्र ) अथ व्रजन्राजपथेन माधवः स्त्रियं गृहीताङ्गविलेपभाजनाम् । विलोक्य कुब्जां युवतीं वराननां पप्रच्छ यान्तीं प्रहसन् रसप्रदः
Śuka said: Next, showing favor to Kubjā, breaking the bow, and making the wrestling arena ready— Now, as Mādhava was proceeding along the royal road, he saw a woman carrying a vessel of ointment, Kubjā, a young maiden with a lovely face. Smiling and full of delight, he questioned her as she walked.
का त्वं वरोर्वेतदु हानुलेपनं कस्याङ्गने वा कथयस्व साधु नः । देह्यावयोरङ्गविलेपमुत्तमं श्रेयः ततस्ते न चिराद् भविष्यति
Who are you, beautiful one? What is this fragrant ointment? Whose maid are you? Please tell us clearly. Apply this excellent ointment to our limbs; by this, your good fortune will soon arise.
सैरन्ध्रि उवाच - दास्यस्म्यहं सुन्दर कंससम्मता त्रिवक्रनामा ह्यनुलेपकर्मणि । मद्भावितं भोजपतेरतिप्रियं विना युवां कोऽन्यतमस्तदर्हति
Sairandhri said: I am a maidservant, O handsome one, approved by Kaṃsa, and my name is Trivakra. My work is to prepare ointments, and what I make is especially dear to the Bhoja king. Besides you two, who else is worthy of it?
