रम्भमाणः खरतरं पदा च विलिखन् महीम् । उद्यम्य पुच्छं वप्राणि विषाणाग्रेण चोद्धरन्
Bellowing harshly, scraping the earth with his feet, he raised his tail and tossed the mounds, lifting them with the tips of his horns.
किञ्चित्किञ्चित् शकृन् मुञ्चन् मूत्रयन् स्तब्धलोचनः । यस्य निर्ह्रादितेनाङ्ग निष्ठुरेण गवां नृणाम्
Releasing dung bit by bit, urinating, his eyes fixed and unblinking, his fierce, harsh bellowing terrified both cows and people.
पतन्त्यकालतो गर्भाः स्रवन्ति स्म भयेन वै । निर्विशन्ति घना यस्य ककुद्यचलशङ्कया
Out of fear, pregnant women miscarried before their time, and the clouds, mistaking his hump for a mountain, scattered away.
तं तीक्ष्णशृङ्गमुद्वीक्ष्य गोप्यो गोपाश्च तत्रसुः । पशवो दुद्रुवुर्भीता राजन् संत्यज्य गोकुलम्
Seeing his sharp horns, the cowherd women and men were struck with terror; the cattle, frightened, fled the settlement, abandoning Gokula.
कृष्ण कृष्णेति ते सर्वे गोविन्दं शरणं ययुः । भगवानपि तद्वीक्ष्य गोकुलं भयविद्रुतम्
All of them cried out, 'Krishna! Krishna!' and took refuge in Govinda; seeing Gokula panic-stricken with fear, the Lord also took notice.
मा भैष्टेति गिराश्वास्य वृषासुरमुपाह्वयत् । गोपालैः पशुभिर्मन्द त्रासितैः किमसत्तम
He comforted them with the words, 'Do not be afraid,' and called out to the bull-demon, while the cowherds and cattle, trembling with fear, looked on: 'What is this, O worst of creatures?'
बलदर्पहाहं दुष्टानां त्वद्विधानां दुरात्मनाम् । इत्यास्फोट्याच्युतोऽरिष्टं तलशब्देन कोपयन्
He, Achyuta, struck the ground with his palm, provoking Ariṣṭa with a resounding slap, and declared, 'I am the destroyer of the pride of the wicked, like you, O evil-minded one.'
सख्युरंसे भुजाभोगं प्रसार्यावस्थितो हरिः । सोऽप्येवं कोपितोऽरिष्टः खुरेणावनिमुल्लिखन् । उद्यत्पुच्छभ्रमन्मेघः क्रुद्धः कृष्णमुपाद्रवत्
Hari, standing with his arm extended over his friend's shoulder, awaited; then Ariṣṭa, enraged, scraped the earth with his hoof, whirled his raised tail like a storm cloud, and charged furiously at Krishna.
अग्रन्यस्तविषाणाग्रः स्तब्धासृग् लोचनोऽच्युतम् । कटाक्षिप्याद्रवत् तूर्ण् इन्द्रमुक्तोऽशनिर्यथा
With his sharp horns pointed forward, his eyes fixed and bloodshot, Ariṣṭa rushed swiftly at Achyuta, casting a sidelong glance, like a thunderbolt released by Indra.
गृहीत्वा शृङ्गयोस्तं वा अष्टादश पदानि सः । प्रत्यपोवाह भगवान् गजः प्रतिगजं यथा
The Lord seized him by the horns, stepped back eighteen paces, and dragged him away, just as an elephant would pull back another elephant.
सोऽपविद्धो भगवता पुनरुत्थाय सत्वरम् । आपतत् स्विन्नसर्वाङ्गो निःश्वसन् क्रोधमूर्च्छितः
Thrown aside by the Lord, Ariṣṭa quickly rose again, his whole body drenched in sweat, breathing heavily, and overcome by wrath, he charged once more.
( मिश्र ) तं आपतन्तं स निगृह्य शृङ्गयोः पदा समाक्रम्य निपात्य भूतले । निष्पीडयामास यथाऽऽर्द्रमम्बरं कृत्वा विषाणेन जघान सोऽपतत्
Seizing the charging Ariṣṭa by the horns, Krishna pressed him down with his foot and threw him to the ground; he squeezed him as one wrings out wet clothes, then struck him with the horn, and Ariṣṭa fell down.
असृग् वमन् मूत्रशकृत् समुत्सृजन् क्षिपंश्च पादाननवस्थितेक्षणः । जगाम कृच्छ्रं निर्ऋतेरथ क्षयं पुष्पैः किरन्तो हरिमीडिरे सुराः
Vomiting blood, releasing urine and feces, flailing his legs, his eyes unsteady, Ariṣṭa suffered greatly and met his end at the hands of Nirṛti; the gods showered Krishna with flowers and praised him.
( अनुष्टुप् ) एवं कुकुद्मिनं हत्वा स्तूयमानः द्विजातिभिः । विवेश गोष्ठं सबलो गोपीनां नयनोत्सवः
Having slain the bull-demon Kukudmin in this way, Krishna, praised by the twice-born, entered the cowherd settlement with Balarama, a festival for the eyes of the gopīs.
अरिष्टे निहते दैत्ये कृष्णेनाद्भुतकर्मणा । कंसायाथाह भगवान् नारदो देवदर्शनः
When the demon Ariṣṭa was slain by Krishna's wondrous deeds, the divine sage Nārada, who beholds the gods, went to inform Kaṃsa.
यशोदायाः सुतां कन्यां देवक्याः कृष्णमेव च । रामं च रोहिणीपुत्रं वसुदेवेन बिभ्यता
He told Kaṃsa that the daughter of Yaśodā, the boy Krishna of Devakī, and Rāma, the son of Rohiṇī, had been entrusted by the fearful Vasudeva.
न्यस्तौ स्वमित्रे नन्दे वै याभ्यां ते पुरुषा हताः । निशम्य तद्भोजपतिः कोपात् प्रचलितेन्द्रियः
Entrusting them to his friend Nanda, Vasudeva had placed those two, by whom your men were slain; hearing this, the king of the Bhojas, his senses agitated by anger—
निशातमसिमादत्त वसुदेवजिघांसया निवारितो नारदेन तत्सुतौ मृत्युमात्मनः
—took up a sharp sword, intending to kill Vasudeva, but was restrained by Nārada, who revealed that those two sons were the death of himself.
ज्ञात्वा लोहमयैः पाशैः बबन्ध सह भार्यया । प्रतियाते तु देवर्षौ कंस आभाष्य केशिनम्
Realizing this, Kaṃsa bound Vasudeva and his wife with iron chains; when the divine sage departed, Kaṃsa summoned Keśin and spoke to him.
प्रेषयामास हन्येतां भवता रामकेशवौ । ततो मुष्टिकचाणूर शलतोशलकादिकान्
He sent him forth, saying, 'Go and kill Rāma and Keśava; then send Muṣṭika, Cāṇūra, Śala, Tośala, and others.'
अमात्यान् हस्तिपांश्चैव समाहूयाह भोजराट् । भो भो निशम्यतामेतद् वीरचाणूरमुष्टिकौ
The king of the Bhojas summoned his ministers and elephant-keepers and said, 'Listen, all of you: these are the mighty wrestlers Cāṇūra and Muṣṭika.'
नन्दव्रजे किलासाते सुतावानकदुन्दुभेः । रामकृष्णौ ततो मह्यं मृत्युः किल निदर्शितः
'In Nanda's cowherd village reside the two sons of Ānakadundubhi, Rāma and Krishna; therefore, my death has been foretold at their hands.'
भवद्भ्यामिह सम्प्राप्तौ हन्येतां मल्ललीलया । मञ्चाः क्रियन्तां विविधा मल्लरङ्गपरिश्रिताः । पौरा जानपदाः सर्वे पश्यन्तु स्वैरसंयुगम्
'You two must kill them here in a wrestling match; let various platforms be prepared, surrounded by the wrestling arena, so that all the citizens and country folk may witness their combat.'
महामात्र त्वया भद्र रङ्गद्वार्युपनीयताम् । द्विपः कुवलयापीडो जहि तेन ममाहितौ
'O chief minister, have the elephant Kuvalayāpīḍa brought to the gate of the arena; let him kill my enemies there.'
आरभ्यतां धनुर्यागः चतुर्दश्यां यथाविधि । विशसन्तु पशून् मेध्यान् भूतराजाय मीढुषे
Let the bow-sacrifice be commenced on the fourteenth day, according to the prescribed rites; let the pure animals be brought in for offering to the Lord of beings, the bestower of blessings.
इत्याज्ञाप्यार्थतन्त्रज्ञ आहूय यदुपुङ्गवम् । गृहीत्वा पाणिना पाणिं ततोऽक्रूरमुवाच ह
Having thus instructed the expert in practical affairs, he summoned the foremost among the Yadus, took his hand in his own, and then spoke to Akrura.
भो भो दानपते मह्यं क्रियतां मैत्रमादृतः । नान्यस्त्वत्तो हिततमो विद्यते भोजवृष्णिषु
"O generous lord, please, out of respect, establish friendship with me; among the Bhojas and Vrishnis, there is no one more well-wishing than you."
अतस्त्वामाश्रितः सौम्य कार्यगौरवसाधनम् । यथेन्द्रो विष्णुमाश्रित्य स्वार्थमध्यगमद् विभुः
"Therefore, gentle one, I have taken refuge in you, as you are capable of accomplishing important tasks, just as Indra, relying on Vishnu, attained his own purpose, O mighty one."
गच्छ नन्दव्रजं तत्र सुतौ आवानकदुन्दुभेः । आसाते तौ इहानेन रथेनानय मा चिरम्
"Go to Nanda's Vraja; there, the two sons of Anakadundubhi are staying. Bring them here at once in this chariot."
निसृष्टः किल मे मृत्युः देवैर्वैकुण्ठसंश्रयैः । तावानय समं गोपैः नन्दाद्यैः साभ्युपायनैः
"It is said that my death has been sent by the gods who dwell in Vaikuntha; bring those two here together with the cowherds, led by Nanda, along with their gifts."
